In this video, I use roughly 4 1/2 lbs of Standard Stoneware 153 to throw a colander. Near the end of the throwing process, I thinned the rim, then rolled it for a sturdy, durable edge. I allowed the form to get leatherhard, then trimmed a foot. I used my Giffin Grip to hold the upside-down form for trimming. www.giffingrip.com/
After trimming the foot, I marked three even notched on the bottom, and cut them with an exacto knife. Lastly, I cut the holes with my drill, and cleaned them smoothly with a dry then wet brush. Then, I flipped the form upside down to dry. Once dry, I bisque fired.
After bisque firing, I waxed the feet sections, then quickly rinsed prior to dipping. Remember to turn the colander upside down when dipping, to prevent too much pooling in the holes. Clean any excess glaze from the holes using a needle tool or drill bit if necessary.
At the end, I show the finished glaze fired forms. The glaze I used in the video is Laguna Moroccan Sand Antique Jade, cone 5- fired at cone 5 with a 25 minute hold.

Thanks so much for showing the finished bowls after they have been glazed. Most tutorials do not show what they really look like. Much appreciated.

I find using a que-tip, dipped in some of the glaze to clear the holes works very well, as you won't scapes off any gals and yet it clears the closed holes.

Great video. I have found all your videos very helpful. If I were in high school I would want to take your courses. You are a great teacher. One trick I have used to clear glaze from the drilled holes is to use a pipe cleaner. All my best.

What is written on the splash pan? What type of sponge are you using here? I’m trying to find a good one that can go over or sit with my fingers when throwing. My last one fell apart. It was stored with my pottery wheel, dry but recoverable underglazes, to name a few. I had a couple bats that wobble despite proper storage. DH was able to clear some space to make room for a small studio. I packed everything up when the girls were young & needed me more. I’m slowly replacing things such as certain throwing ribs, sponges, chamois cloth, etc… Oh, those berry bowls are beautiful! Great job!

Don't you know it!!!! :-) My list of videos I wanted to make for my students before the school year begins is getting smaller... but still so much to do!!!!! This will alleviate trying to do the demo multiple times for multiple kids throughout the year! ;-) Thanks for the kind comments! One more month to soak up the summer! :-)

LOL... I know, I know. You spend all semester looking forward to the summer, and then spend much of the summer getting ready for the next school year! YOu can take the teacher out of the classroom, but you can't take the classroom out of the teacher!! Have a nice summer... what's left of it. Ax

thank you for showing how the piece looks after firing. i am a bit curious though: why do you use a wax resist if you sponge off the bottom anyway?
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 6 жыл бұрын
Great question! I do use both! I always tell my students.the wax is designed to make sponging off the glaze easier. The wax doesn’t prevent the glaze entirely from getting on the base. Sometimes the glazes will form little droplets on top of the wax. Without sponging off of the droplets, it would definitely fuse in the kiln. I hope that makes sense to you! :)

When you mark for the feet, is there a reason you don’t look down from the top and put the gaps where the arms of the griffin grip is?
@KaransPotsAndGlass

Hello Laurence! :) I am assuming you're inquiring about the Giffin Grip which I used to hold the piece upside down while trimming! I LOVE it!!! It is really a wonderful tool which has made trimming a breeze! I have several videos on using a Giffin Grip if you would like to check them out! kzbin.info/aero/PLj0pNzEmvM_qv1E8j0Gfu_RVt2E066R4n The website for the manufacturer is: www.giffingrip.com/ They are available from many suppliers here in the US. I bet most could ship to you! I know it is an initial investment, but really, it has been one of the best investments I ever made in my studio! :) Beyond my kiln my wheel, and my bats, there is no one tool I use more than my Giffin Grip! :) Oh, and I found out they make both right-handed and left-handed rotating grips! That was a huge benefit to all my left-handed students I have which could never quite get used to trimming in an opposite direction! The company is small, but they make a huge difference in the pottery community! Best of luck- if you end up by contacting them through email or something... mention you learned about it through one of my videos! I've been in contact with them over the years, and I really think they'd like to know how people learn of it! All the best- please let me know if you have any more questions, or if by chance, I addressed the wrong thing you were asking! :) Cheers! Karan :)

Lol! Good point! I just use the rolled rim as a handle- as my fingers tuck neatly under it, but, I am not really holding this up when I pour anything through it! I will look into incorporating some on some future designs! Thanks for the input! :)
