Adam Nelson was one of the most intense shot putters to throw on the world stage. Did his intensity give him the edge? Watch this comparison of his PR of 22.51 to his second-best throw he threw just prior!

Disclaimer: I'm absolutely thrash at throwing right now due to a quarter century of simply not doing it and Adam Nelson is a stud but watching myself recently is exactly why I can spot passive/lazy footwork and one thing I'd like to highlight is the slight difference in how he is working the right knee/hip on his landing better in the 2nd throw. His first was noticably passive (compared to other elite throwers, not compared to amateurs) and his style is somewhat like that which in my opinion is where his over-the-top left leg comes in handy to ground him hard before the finish because if you don't bring that left leg down hard trying to "stand" on the right leg rather than working it around while staying low can definately cause the left leg to whiff the air as it passes cleanly over the intended spot (probably also why we see some throwers intentionally plant the ball of the left foot and never get the heel down... this sometimes leads me to speculate about the differences in the massive warmup throw Joe Kovacs did compared to his competition throws where he can't step forward). As a "polar opposite" comparison specifically focused on the right leg/hip I think your video on Josh Awotunde is awesome. ps. I know Adam isn't really trying to "stand" there but throwing downtempo with his style and getting a micropause right there where the right leg supports the bodyweight has a similar effect where the "levering forward" gets ahead of everything else.
