Every scrapper is going to want a wire stripping machine sooner or later, it's one of the best investments you can make if you frequently scrap copper wire. There are many options available though, so which wire stripper tool is the best choice? Is the cheaper one good enough, and is the Stripmeister worth it? Let's compare the two drill powered machines I have on hand and see which is worth the money!
Which wires are worth it vid: • Is It Worth Stripping ...
Stripmeister: www.wirestripm... (Not an affiliate link)
Cheap wire stripper: amzn.to/3jrO2iS (affiliate link)
The wire cutters I like: amzn.to/2T6j3OW (affiliate link)
This is the cheaper version: amzn.to/2SwrYsB (affiliate link)
And those grips I recommend: amzn.to/2QCJmYl (affiliate link)
(If you make a purchase on amazon through the links above, a small amount of what amazon makes on the sale is shared with me. It's a great way to help support my channel, at no additional cost to you. Even if you buy something other than my tool recommendations!)

I got over two years and a couple thousand lbs with my first blade then would run a honing sharpener on it while it was running wire to keep it sharp then finally splurged on the new blade. Did a bunch of that old house wire with the paper/asphalt coating on it and as you would expect destroyed that blade lol made in Canada 🇨🇦 for sure best quality

Cheap Stripmeister Upgrades (off the top of my head): 1 - Mount it to a tabletop. Will make a huge difference for it to not tip and slip and shuffle around on you. 2 - Take apart your corded drill (or a wrecked drill) and remove the trigger assembly. It'll probably be a triac-based phase-fired controller that chops of up your AC, super simple, only be 3 obvious wires. Make an extension for those 3 wires and build this into a foot pedal (folded bit of sheet steel or plywood and a hinge, with switch at the back). Now you're not leaning awkwardly to the side to make it spin, or using one hand just to pull the trigger. You should be more than 2x as fast controlling the wirefeed with your foot and having two hands to control the wire angle and tension. And of course mount your drill securely to the same baseplate (or just grab a motor, but, hard to argue with the max $10 you'd have to spend for a garage sale old B&D drill with an annoying keyed chuck). 3 - Replace top knob with slightly bigger knob with a speed handle for fast adjustment (like the control knobs on a lathe, but with the handle part closer to the middle). Or, add a second motor (cheap powered screwdriver) vertically to control this knob, and on a separate foot pedal trigger. Two hands, two feet, lightning fast operation. 4 - Add a big eyelet to the edge of your baseplate, which'll be like, 8" in front of the stripper. It's a tiny bit slower to feed your wire through this first, but 20x safer. There is no such thing as a safe powered wirefeed. Eventually your hands *will* get sucked into the machine while it's running. Better to slam against the eyelet than straight into the knurled rollers.

I have to thank you so much for making this video. I bought a Vevor stripper a week ago, having done minimal research. I figured most wire strippers would work the same or at least be comparable to more expensive ones. When I used the Vevor machine I wanted to shoot it out of a cannon into the sun. Incredibly frustrating cheap piece of garbage. I just received my Stripmeister today and, having only used it for 5 minutes, I’m in love with it. I own the other one, branded Vevor. Once you go through the learning curve, it's still faster than manually stripping each conductor, and $80 isn't all that bad. There is an improvement on it since yours, the feed wheel has the actual grooves like the Meister. I've found feeding the conductor below the blade height with the curvature of the feed wheels works well like a V-belt pulley works. I also didn't realise the Stripmeister was a Canadian company.

I would like to thank you for this video. While I didn't get the stripmester I got the vevor electric powered one during black Friday deals. And while yes I was having trouble at first. But your suggestion of watching their videos on how to set up the cheaper machine, well I decided to do the same... and it helped me tremendously to get it at least working like it should. And it appears to have the same type of design on the backplate now. I have a bin full of wire from installing car audio and clipping power tool wires when tools burnt out. So hopefully it pays out. 🙏

I have the China made for three yrs now. All I can say is why spend that $100 it costed to ship when you can use that for quality. But what I learned with the China boy: 1 bolt it down to a table. 2 use the crank instead of a power source. 3 get rid of that guid plate and just use your hands to guide the wire. My China boy also kicked the wire off to the side so that’s why I got rid of the guide plate. Plus the V wheel dose not grip the vinyl so well when using the drill, it seems to spin more than pull. But on a budget I say keep on saving for the better stripmiser or another Canadian base stripper called copper mine. Thanks thub for this review.

I have had a stripmeister for a couple years. Absolutely awesome. I have stripped wire that just barely fit through the largest hole down to the speaker wire that he shows. No issues. It takes a bit of learning to set it up right for each size but once you figure how it feels, you’ll do that in seconds. I have probably stripped several miles of solid copper and aluminum and the first blade shows no signs of wear. If you look closely at the Chinese blade in this video when he is talking about the grip wheels, it already has wear on it…. Also something not pointed out here, if you set the Romex wire properly, it not only cuts the outside case, it will also strip through one of the 2 insulated wires at the same time. That way you only have one wire left to strip on the second pass…. Buy this product. You will not regret it. Also, mount it on a bench, not a vise, it’s too hard on your drill chuck if the drill is hanging off. And probably hard on the mandrel bearing of the unit too…

Now, with stripping the wires, as you first feed it through, attach something to where you have the wire on one side and the housing on the other side, that way it separates it as you're stripping it, then you just have it separated already. I took a motor I found, added an controller and it blasts through the wire. Tip - sort your wire into sizes/types as your largest time killer is the resetting of the cutting wheel and guides. Going back and forth between them just wastes time.

Got a strip meister a couple years ago for Christmas and I love it. My only issue was some times on smaller wires they tend to ride up out of the groove but other than that great

Yeah, me too. I try and strip smaller wire that we probably shouldn't be wasting out time stripping. But i need something to do when relaxing in the garage having a beer and listening to music.

George try lowering the guide so the wire is being pulled up at an angle for small gauge wire, It helps to seat the wire down into the drive rolls so it doesn't wonder out of position. That helped me alot using mine.

I totally agree, I own the cheap one and I'm not impressed with it. You called it exactly, the gripping on the wheel sucks. It is diffucult to keep it from slipping out of the groove and ending up on the side of the cutting wheel, especially with thinner wire. Bad design all around. You're spot-on with your critique. Love you videos. 🙂

When doing small cables place the small hole on the cable guide on bottom just so that you guide the cable up and over the rollers I found out by trial and error very frustrating at first but now runs like a dream and goes down to 1mm easypeasy.

I went and bought the blue no name motorized wire strippers you see everywhere for about $175us. Had it for years. I have both hands free to dig through the wire pile, and can just keep feeding wire into it non stop because it's always on. I don't have to hold the trigger. Your model looked like it works pretty good. But if your going to be stripping a lot of wire, I would recommend the motorized/hands free one for under $200us. Best money I ever spent. Paid for itself first day.

I have the bigger one and it took me a few times to figure it out, but if you feed the wire to be stripped from the BOTTOM (adjust the plate accordingly), and this forces pressure on the wire being fed, adjust the blade as necessary for the wire. Works like a champ even with the very small multi strand electrical cord wires. Don't line up the hole evenly with the blade, drop the hole down some to create a little tension.

I personally bought the cheaper machine and those are the same issues I was having with it. The cable would always go to the side and I'll have to stop and adjust it. It was really annoying. Thank you for the demo on the well built machine, I will be buying o e very soon.

Yes, I too have the bigger/cheaper one with the scrap metal handle and the weird gloves. Since I don’t get a ton of wire, I’ve figured out it’s nuances and how the guide plates need to be. I paid for it with free scrap, so not a big deal. ($50-$80?? I can’t remember) Once I get going it flies through the same gauge of wire. The other one seems a lot less finicky though. Anyways, I have a budget stripper for sale😆

I got the stripmeister base model 2 years ago for $170-180 + shipping and running the quick math it paid for itself in less than 2 weeks; and clearly I was being lazy. 2 Years later I still haven't yet needed to change the blade and I only have 2 complaints. 1) though feed grooves can get gummed up with paint chips and dust, and the only method I've found to clean them is to trace each groove with the tip of my pocket knife (and if I don't it leads to some annoying jamming issues). 2) I can atripp anything smaller than 18 gage wire and occasionally I get in 20 gage wire lol. Oh and it has a hard time with MCM that's 3/4 inch diameter. If those are the only two problems in two years of use I'd say this is the best out there and well worth the expense.

I have one of the cheaper ones. the best way to get it all to feed correctly is you have to separate all the wires by size. this makes it much easier to run wires because you don't have to constantly keep adjusting the adjustment plates. however, the adjustment plates are key to speeding up the process. if you put the correct gauge wire in the correct hole it will feed correctly
@thubprint

Absolutely, swapping back and forth between gauges is a huge time loss. I’ve really got nothing against the cheaper one, it certainly gets the job done 👍

I have the cheap one, and no it's not the quality of the stripmiester. However I've got down pretty good. Always feed in the large hole. Might it at the edge of the bench toward you. Pull down on the wire as feeding it in, which pulls the wire down into the "v" rollers. Use a 18v or more drill. It's not perfect but it will work.

I agree 100% 👍 I have the same Chinese wire stripper and as you say the roller angle is too shallow and the knurling isn't aggressive enough, i also find turning the guide plate upside down helps certain wire feed in better but it's a total pain in the arse 😤 Well done a great vid 👍

I use the Vervor electric stripper, hardly any adjusting needed for any size wire from 18 gage to 600 MCM once you set it once., spend a little more money and get something that works well. I strip about 20,000 pounds a year of bigger wire like 4/0 to 500 mcm.
