A negative review of a popular camera bag...

The original Domke bags from the mid 70s had no padding at all,. Pros didn't worry about it. Even the dividers were not padded. Jim Domke pointed out he had never damaged a camera while it was in the bag, only when carrying it loose. Over time they adapted (somewhat) to giving amateur's what they think they need with some padding. In 45 years of shooting I have yet to drop my bag.

I have the non-waxed F-5xb and have carried it every day for the last 6 months. I like it so much I'm contemplating getting another one. It is the perfect size, the build is great, and it's great value for the money. Mine has been caught in the rain, traveled across the east side of the country by train, spent a week on the beach in Mexico, camping in northern Michigan, wandering DC, Asheville, Detroit, and so on. The velcro loosens up over time - it's what velcro does and I suspect that is the reason there is so much of it to begin with. The only time I zip mine is when it's raining or when in a crowd/traveling. The zippers don't scratch, and I've put gaff tape on the zipper pulls to quiet them. Even while being in the rain, my NON-waxed bag has kept all my gear dry. There is the perfect amount of rubberized grip on the shoulder strap. There's no reason to over think this bag, buy it, put your shit in it, and go shoot. If there were any changes I would make it would be these two. A very thin and unobtrusive handle for the top flap, however, sewn on the top/rear near where the flap attaches to the bag. That way if you grab it by the handle and it isn't velcro'd securely all your shit doesn't fall out. Second, put the logo on the inside of the flap or something. I know I could 'surgically remove' mine, but it's so unimportant that I haven't bothered to do it yet. Perhaps I'll make the changes myself. It was difficult to find the reviews I was looking for before I purchased my bag, so I'll throw mine out there. I wanted a shoulder bag that was as small as I could get it, while carrying 2 cameras. So I carry a Fujifilm X100f, a Minolta X-700 w/ md 35mm f1.8, 2 spare Fuji batteries and 2 extra rolls of film (4 will fit easily) and a few lens wipes. That is more than I will ever need for a day or two. Chargers and more film go in my travel backpack if I'm traveling. My favorite bag of all the ones I've used.

Here's an update. I still have and use the F-5xb regularly, although I bought a F-5xc to carry my X100F and Fuji GA645i with extra film - that bag has been to Mexico City twice now. The original 'b' I bought has worn very nicely. The velcro makes no noise whatsoever unless I really work the stuff together to make it stick. The velcro on my 'c' is starting to break in now and is less noisy. I like that these bags aren't too wide, which makes them easy to carry. Currently looking at a Domke F-6 as I just purchased a Mamiya 645 Pro. Still the best bags I've used and I would not let this video deter you from purchasing the bag. It really is wonderful.

You are not wrong - you just clearly picked the wrong bag. Designed from professionals for professionals! I use Domke bags for over 2 decades, my original F2 is 23 years old. Right now i'm using a F2 (rugged wear) and a F801 (also rugged wear) with absolutely no wax coming of my bags - and never did! By the way, the padding is minimum on purpose: When you take your gear out of the bag, the bag sits very thin on your body and is out of your way, exactly how photojournalists want and need it. The belt loop can make this bag part of the Domke modular system, and not a "fanny pack". But you said it yourself, you don't understand this design - fair enough.

This video made me want the bag even more. Seeing someone pick it apart when I can see easy solutions for any of the issues made me realise how good this bag is. I’ve ordered one. Maybe I’ll regret it but we’ll see.

Just a followup. I’ve had the bag for about a week now. I got the exact same bag. Rugged with the wax finish. First thing I noticed is that mine does not look as saturated with wax. Even if it were you could probably leave it out in the sun for a few hours and it would be fine. I can run my hands all over the bag and I have zero residue on my hands. As for the padding it has the perfect amount for me I wouldn’t want anymore as it would just make it bulky. As for the Velcro it’s no worse than any other bag I’ve ever had and if it bothers you (it doesn’t bother me) then you could silence it by adding Velcro strips to it. As for the strap I love the strong overbuilt buckles and the two adjustments as it gives you more adjustment. I also cross carry the bag and the rubber doesn’t stick so much that you can’t swing the bag around to access it. But you can always flip the strap over if you wanted. Just want to offer an alternative viewpoint as for me and I believe for many this could be the perfect bag. Everyone has different needs but if you want a minimalistic bag that will fit the essentials and is still small enough to take everywhere then this is well worth considering.

Thank you for the thoughtful review. I've had the Domke F5XZ in the wax works finish for years. I love it. The wax has never been a problem. I've only rewaxed it once and it came out better than new. I do find the velcro to be loud. I keep hoping that Domke will replace their Velcro with magnets. I'm not sure how digital cameras mix with magnets though. Also the F5XZ has padding on the sides.

Greetings from Columbus, IN I carry the same Nikon 1 J5 and have found that the best way to daily carry it is in a Tenba BYOB7 carried inside of my Saddleback Leather medium satchel. Doesn't look like a camera bag and allows me to carry my notebook, CCW, etc. Love your channel - keep up the great work.

Gosh-lots of angst. I always say camera bags are like pants, you got to try them on to see if they fit you. Doesn't mean it won't be perfect for someone else. Working pro who has used these bags for like 30 years. I like it as a super small bag to hold a lens and spare battery/card for low-key shooting or vacation. The idea is that it is a SMALL bag for a few things. I pull out the dividers and a 70-200 F2.8 lays down very nicely in the bag. Perfect for lens changes with a 17-35 zoom. Put a few small accessories in the inside pouch and you're good to go. If needed, I can even lay a flash on top lengthwise inside. If I need to haul more gear, then I use a bigger bag. But, it's great for times when you don't want to haul the kitchen sink. (oh, and skip the models with the wax coating)

Thanks for the review, really informative. I love the looks of the bag but that Velcro is obnoxious. I also don't like pulling my camera gear in and out past zippers as I don't want to risk scratching anything, particularly the screen on the back of the camera.

I've used the bigger Domke F-2 bag for years and I love it, but you have some good points. One thing I wonder about is the problem with the greasy residue on your bag. I never experienced that and I've never heard of anyone else complain about it. I wonder if was a factory defect and they just put too much waterproofing on your bag? I do agree the choice to make those pockets so short was a poor design decision. The lack of padding in the side is not good, either. I was looking at this bag as a smaller alternative to my F-2 when I did t want to drag my whole DSLR system along, but now I'm having second thoughts.

I have the Domke F-5XA (Black) and I actually enjoyed that bag. It's similar to yours but it's not as wide and mine isn't covered in wax. As for the strap you can use the side that doesn't have the grip so it doesn't drag your shirt. I know these bags don't have much padding but my camera survives in it. I've even dropped it with my DSLR in it, the only thing that broke was the lens hood (ouch). it does ok in the rain but just don't let it sit in the pouring water. I'd actually buy another Domke F-5XA but I'm really looking into purchasing the Wotankraft Ryker bag.

Hi all, I have this Domke bag in black canvas, it is now over ten years old and I have been very satisfied with almost all aspects. I used it in the beginning for my NIKON D200 incl. zoom, or alternatively with the 105 macro lens with a Metz macroflash attached, perfect fit! Later for my Panasonic GH4 and several lenses. I agree that it has not much padding--but that is also the reason why I purchased it in the first place--I never dropped it or banged it against anything so I had any damage. The thinner padding kept the size down. Those lugs on either side are for an optional hand grip so they are stitched on in the right way. One thing so--my bag has the front pocket the full front size i.e. right down not only part of the way as in the video??? This bag looks now worn and faded--I thought of replacing it with the THINKTANK RETROSPECTIVE 5. I did purchase it via mail and I am not very satisfied with it at all. It is slightly bigger than the Domke but very stiff and heavy. The part I don't like at all are the little gussets in the top corners they are very intrusive and the top flap seems to be too small as there is mostly a gap on either side. I rather like the zip AND flap of the Domke. The thinktank lives now unused in a shelf and I am happy again with my old Domke! Having said this--a bag is a very individual item and one might be right for me but not for you...

I just bought a similar bag (domke f-831), and it's not nearly as greasy as you claim your bag is. I do agree with some of your assessments of the 5xb though, such as "belt loop" being rather useless. I wouldn't say your review steered me away from the 5xb, but it didn't help. I suggest you look at a domke bag that a) isn't waxed canvas b) has removable all round padding like the f-831 if your are concerned about protection. Your patagonia bag probably works, but you have to admit it has a pretty high "dumb looking" factor.

Honestly, I can understand your dismay, although it hasn't been my experience with my Domkes. I've got an F2 and a little F8, and both serve their purpose beautifully, but they're not perfect. Domke have a habit of making some odd decisions with their bags, and whilst those decisions have been minor for me, I can see why they would irritate other people. Whilst I've not experienced the wax issue you have with any of my Domkes, your review has definitely put me off buying an F5XB for my little Fuji. Thank you!

Due respect to your opinion, but I think you should reevaluate your expectations for a camera bag. Personally, I don't expect any bag to save my gear from negligence on my part; setting it down on a ledge or behind a car or near a pool, etc. Keeping my gear safe from setting the bag down a little sharply, or turning a corner to fast and swinging the bag into the wall, or a tumble onto the passenger floorboard of my car if I have to hit the brakes (which I've done twice with my Rolleicord) is all I really expect to save my gear from. I mean, you're probably wearing the bag when you shoot, and your camera is likely around your neck at the time, right? What could possibly happen while you're wearing that bag that wouldn't also damage you in the process if it was sufficient enough to destroy your gear?
@kuliatv
@kuliatv 7 жыл бұрын
My first real camera bag (which I still have) is the Domke F2. Pretty basic (old fashioned) by today's standards. I think there's a lot of nostalgia connected to the Domke bags that appeals to a certain segment (not unlike Billingham bags). Companies like Think Tank and Tenba have evolved bags to better meet the needs of digital photography, in my opinion. It's the little details that matter to me - like the seam that you mentioned vs. zippers that tuck away to protect gear from scratching in most Think Tank bags. Or the metal fasters for the flap on my F2 (that I always dread will drop right on to one of my lenses) vs. the velcro silencers on my Think Tank. Domke is a venerable brand, but I'm happy there are other alternatives.

I have one of these in non-wax finish. Hence...no wax issue. The little tabs you pointed out that you say are in the wrong direction, those are for a small hand-strap that should have come with the bag. I second the main strap issue...just remove it and have a seamstress sew it on directly. For the end padding, Domke have additional insert that are cheap-kinda sucks, but it's a solution. I carry two Leica bodies without lenses vertically, and two connected lenses vertically. The plastic lens connector is avail in USA through DAG-it's basically a 2 sided female M-Mount that each lens clicks into. This is almost identical to the Ona Bowery...which is better? 6 or half a dozen.

That's a good review and I agree 100% with your observations for this model. I have few of the Domke bags like F2, F8 and Next Generation Metro. Luckily with these models there is not much I am unhappy about except that fact that I also bought all these in RuggedWear and do not like that oily feeling after handling them. It is indeed very annoying and on reflecting upon it now, I can't believe myself for getting all these in the same material. My only reason is that I have few Domke strap pouches in RuggedWear and so having the same material for all these meant using the pouches to suit a particular bag as per my travelling plans. On the positive, I really like the size of F8 with my Nikon F3 and 3 lens along with other bits in a very small package. Also have attached a strap pouch 900 to carry extra films and the postal strap which gives a comfortable feeling. Of course the protection can't be compared with any backpack but it is sufficient for me. But for anyone reading this comment, RuggedWear is really a deal breaker for its oily residue. Maybe another colour Domke with the ones I have is recommended.

Left this comment about 6 months ago and felt that I should address the oil residue issue after using it for few months. I am quite happy with the RuggedWear version of all my Domke bags F2, F3 & F8. It is just a matter of getting used to its condition and the oily bit feels not so oily after carrying it for few days. I would recommend RuggedWear Domke bags.

The secondary tabs for are for the zipper. The wax treatment wears in lovely eventually and stops coating your hands and clothing pretty quick with actual use. It als does the job if you very judiciously refresh it every few years. They sell secondary inserts to add padding making this the only line of bags that really put you in control of the padding placement - I often replace domke inserts with stiffeners and or a layer or two of craft foam in the right places that gives me that perfect amount of padding where I want it instead of the big overstuffed BYOB style pillows - Yer bag, yer way though - Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Obviously, not the right bag for you. Wrong material, wrong design. I've owned and used a F5XB, standard material not waved canvas, for thirty years and carried oodles of different kinds of equipment in it. It's one of my best grab and go bags for a host of different kinds of equipment. Earlier models had a slightly different front pocket arrangement, with a taller slip pocket and pen holders ... I de-stitched the pen holders so that I have two slip pockets side by side. I often take the strap off and stuff the bag into my motorcycle luggage without it .. just right. If the rubber on the strap catches on your clothes for a cross-budy carry, turn the strap inside out. Et cetera. :)

You clearly don't understand the Domke philosophy, Anson... Domke = not a bulky bag!! I bought a waxed F2 today. No problem at all with the wax. It's the best bag I haven and I have 4 Domke's in total. Only the F7 double AF has padded pockets for 2 bodies, which I purchased myself. They were not included. Domke owners don't want a bulky bag. If you want bulky, buy a Crumpler. Than You will have more padding than room for gear.

For the most of the points you are mentioning you are correct however at the same time totally wrong (always just according to my opinion), but with one exception The exception is the rugged wax version material. Even if they are a lot of people who love this , I totally agree with you ..too waxi … and I do not like the material and the feeling of it. I had ordered one rugged wax …and returned it / changed back to canvas. For the other points which are correct but you are wrong …you always have to consider that no equipment is perfect for any kind of use and when judging it (or buying it) you have to take into consideration for which kind of use it’s made for. When somebody is saying that an ultra wide angle f/4 lens is bad because it does not have narrow enough depth of field that he wants to shoot bokehlious portraits shoots, the fact of the justification may be correct , but the connection not. I’m using Domke bags (always canvas) for more than 20 years and I have a F5Xb (olive canvas) since 14 years, using it almost daily and even If the last 2-3 years It’s age is quite visible, it’s durability and functionality is ok and it is still full on duty. This bags are made in order to enable you to carry you equipment with the very minimum bag volume, provide some basic protection, to be minimal but practical and comfortable in use and not shouting loud “I’m a camera bag”. Believe me in some countries / locations this is very important . And on this aspects this bag is shining. They are not made to provide full or very god protection. During the 20+ years using Domke bags I had 0 cases of any -even small- damage on my equipment and I’m not a person who is famous to be very carefully with his stuff ..just some common sense. For info, the specific model also F5xb and due to its design with the zipper which gets covered by the canvas Flap above, is definitely not waterproof but it can withstand a lot of rain. So if you are out and cached by a light or medium rain shower you don’t have to worry about you gear …Living in Germany I had very often such catching in the rain situations (just keeping some limits, based on common sense). It gets wet outside but within the bag everything stays dry. So concluding, with the justification of you opinion and you especially with you statement that you do not understand how Domke is advertising that they are making camera bags, this sounds to exactly the same as if I where hearing somebody saying that he does not understand how Ferrari is advertising that they are building cars, because they are terrible to drive them off road. As mentioned at the beginning, it’s just a personal opinion… PS The Billingham Hadley Small, may suit better you bag requirements

If you already had a bag you loved, why did you buy another one? Kinda curious.

This bag is clearly not for you. It has been almost six years since you made is video. Maybe you've figured out some of the design "quirks"?

you don't need padding on a bag like this. This is not a bag for long term storage or gear, it's not for checking camera gear on a plane. It is a carry bag and this style of bag has been a staple of PJ's for decades. I have had my F2 (with no padding) for 15 years and carried Hasselblad/Leica/Nikon/Sony/Rolleiflex and Sigma DP's and never had an issue. You are using it to walk around and carry stuff - what do you need padding for? Really, just ask yourself if you need padding or just think you need padding.

Anson, vos commentaires sur ce superbe petit sac Domke F 5XB sont de si mauvaise foi que j'ai pensé que c'était du deuxième degré. ;) .

It's a waxed cotton bag, of course it has a wax residue it's what makes it waterproof. Clearly didn't read the product details as you seem to be critical of everything. Tab is there so you can put a lock on the zip ??? Agree about the lack of padding at the sides and top.

You're a mirror-less user? And it's Olympus? And you did not think about wax infused bags? Enough said...

Every review I'd seen before this was positive. I wont be buying this bag now. I'm now looking at the Tenba Switch 8 for my m43 outfit. Many thanks.

Agree completel: greasy fingerdabs acroos cameragear. Unnecessarily shallow pockets. And, indeed, who wants to carry a beg like this on one's belt? [F-8 bag much better; also has a base plate to protect shape.]

Padding on the sides and top would make the bag more stiff and less comfortable to wear.
