I don't think that people realised at the time that watching each Thunderbirds episode was like watching a small self-contained movie. They had it all - superb special effects, great story lines full of danger, excitement and even humour and of course accompanied by that wonderful scoring from Barry Gray. What other programme in the 1960s could fire the imaginations of kids all over the world like this programme could?

I have watched Thunderbirds since the 1960's, and the show's opening titles, especially the piece of music that accompanies the 'this episode' section, still, I repeat, still brings me out in goosebumps - I'll be 60 next year. Even a simple touch like Peter Dynely's countdown, is utterly thrilling. If, after that sequence, you didn't want to watch the show, then I'd think that you were rather dull. 😆😆😆

There will never be a show like Thunderbirds again. At least not one that captures the uniqueness the original had. Thunderbirds was also quite ahead for it's time, preaching equality, environmentalism and equal rights, in a way that wasn't in your face like modern shown. Half the time, you didn't even realise you were being preached to, like the original Star Trek series. Of all the characters from the show, my favourite is definitely Lady Penelope. No matter what was going on, she kept a cool head, and you never felt like she was a damsel in distress. Favourite Thunderbird? Thunderbird 2 of course. That modular design and sleek look always gets me. Very close second is Thunderbird 3. That rocket design just screams the 60's idea of futuristic. Plus, it's a nifty piece of kit.

The Network edition of Space 1999 is the best quality Blu Ray I own - both for picture and content. Many hours of hard work must have gone into restoring the original, the sound is brilliant and the extras feel like someone who loves the series has wanted to share them rather than just put a few token documentaries on there. To see Thunderbirds so clear and with beautiful vivid (but not over saturated colours) like this is building my anticipation to one day see all the episodes given such loving treatment. It's like it was made yesterday..... and 4:3 ratio too. We have all put up with some pretty poor conversions from VHS days till now. At last a company that really understands is here... long may they go on :)

@Axaul10 жыл бұрын
Ah yes. The original attempt to restore (or the popular term at the time Digitally Remaster) was really a half-assed job. All it did was up the colour saturation and contrast and sharpen the image a bit, without bothering to clean up the film itself. I'm sorry but damage to film stock does nothing to "enhance" the creator's original vision, rather its just the film equivalent of rose-tinted lenses. Rescan the film at 2K or 4K (whatever is best), give it the love that they gave to Space: 1999 and it will be spectacular to look at. And if there is to be a 5.1 sound mix, be respectful by utilize the original sound library, not the contemporary effects that ITV used.
@AndrewChapman10 жыл бұрын
Axaul I honestly don't understand why they had to include additional sound effects for the sake of the 5.1 sound mix in the first place. In some scenes where the new sounds can be heard, you can still hear the original sound effects at the same time and they actually sound quite clear. Why can't ITV realize this and just go back to the original episode soundtracks without the new sound effects?
@thebladezmanII7 жыл бұрын
Why is simple, to make it more genuinely stereo sounding. The fact is that they clearly had no access to proper separate sound elements (no separate vocal tracks, no music tracks, no sound effects track). If you put their stereo "remaster" through Audacity's vocal removal filter, you'll notice something - that the stereo effect cuts out whenever a character talks (unless the dialogue is coming through a radio anyhow or there's a slight stereo echo added to the dialogue). Their stereo effect for the soundtrack isn't all that genuine - you can accomplish the same effect using Audacity's Psuedo Stereo plugin. I would've been less annoyed by it had they actually included the original mono soundtrack as well on the original DVDs (they did for "Captain Scarlet", at least on the US DVDs). Thank God Shout Factory's release uses the same mono track as the Japanese Blu-Ray. Although those tracks sound more muffled and less crystal clear as the ones used for the stereo mix with a few noticeable glitches, I'd rather have those since they're the original tracks. And thank God it's not the same sound master used on Digital releases and the UK "Filmed in Supermarionation" boxset (used on this video), because it's just the mono center track extracted from the surround sound version, so it still contains most of the added sounds (some are omitted completely though since they had a weak or no center track).

Thunderbirds The Original Series VS Thunderbirds Are GO. X
@minecraftWithDanielD4 жыл бұрын
I don't believe that to be a fair versus. At their core, yes, they are quite similar, but they are more or less artefacts of their time and are quite different. A clear dividing example is the overarching story in TBAG, which draws in the audience to keep watching and see what happens whilst the original only had The Hood who occasionally appeared. Even the visuals used paint a difference. TBAG has in this day and age, arguably better visuals and effects, but at the same time, the originals are more visually impressive because of their limitations. The question you have posed is essentially which era of TV is better
