Action movies, and big studio genre movies, have been so bad since around the 2010s started that stuff from the ‘90s and 2000s that just seemed kind of good or even bad now come off as fantastic in comparison. Last year when I was out of town I ended up rewatching The Relic, now I liked The Relic when it came out, but I also didn’t exactly think of it as something super special back in 1997. But today? I can’t even imagine a studio making a $60 million R rated monster movie that’s as violent as The Relic is, not as a studio project anyway. Maybe post Deadpool and Wolverine they might, but this was last year; but even then it probably wouldn’t have some big cool looking practical monster FX they built for it. A movie I always had big problems with was Spielberg‘s War of the Worlds from ‘05. Back in 2005 it just felt too constrained by its PG-13 rating. You got these scenes where they’re acting like there’s dead people strewed about but there’s nobody there, and you can guess there’s nobody there because it’s PG-13. But in 2023... I still have problems with it, but in comparison to what gets made now it feels stupid to even have problems. In a world where TV hacks that don’t know what they’re doing are directing big budget action movies, I’ll take toned down 2005 PG-13 War of the Worlds Steven Spielberg. Also in 2023 the soft 2005 PG-13 movie seems hard compared to what the PG-13 (most modern PG-13 movies feel like PG movies where they say “shit” sometimes and maybe “fuck” once) has become today with its Martian tripods shooting fountains of blood out like it’s Fargo, and spreading the red weed made of people that creates pools of blood in the environment. The Edward Norton Hulk movie was always MCU. It’s the Ang Lee Hulk movie wasn’t, although they kind of played it like the Norton movie was a follow-up. The Ang Lee movie ended with him in South America, the MCU Norton movie starts with him still in South America. That first Avengers movie reused things from both the Hulk movies. It reused the Hulk bottling factory chase scene, and it used the bit from Ang Lee’s Hulk movie where he’s on top of the jet. I’m not as gung ho on that Norton Hulk movie as you seem to be, but that movie does have the best “Captain America” fight scene in the whole MCU when the still human Blonsky takes on the Hulk. That Hulk movie had Louis Leterrier directing, the guy that did The Transporter, meaning it’s one of the few MCU movie with a director that actually knows how to do action. Marvel should’ve brought Leterrier back to do Captain America stuff, do a movie with human characters that was full of fight scenes like that Blonsky one. That first Avengers movie is also horrible, Joss Whedon hadn’t learned to direct yet and is doing his worst Michael Bay impression with his camera setups, it’s full of unfunny and stupid dialogue, (the whole red ledger scene) and Whedon very clearly does not know what to do with everyone. During the SHIELD Helicarrier attack everyone gets a thing to do, and Captain America’s thing to do is turn a thing on, and his action scene during the attack ends up being: Trying to no fall out of the Helicarrier. Maybe someone could shoot those scenes of Captain America trying to hold on and not fall and made them really exciting and cinematic, but Joss Whedon was not that person. Although by Age of Ultron either he’s better, or he’s better at letting some action director on second unit do things without messing it up. I’d contend there’s probably like 6 good MCU movies. The MCU has always been kind of weird, because it’s largely a series of action comedy movies, and since the first Iron Man movie the action in this action movies has never really been good. It’s actually a little disheartening that the big series of action movies of the last 14 years kind of sucks as doing action, and ends up burying better action movies in the process. Like the 2010 Planet of the Ape movies (especially Dawn and War), 2012, Edge of Tomorrow, Oblivion, Upgrade, Kingsman, Kong Skull Island, X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Last Stand, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows are all better movies than the majority of what comes out of the MCU...better than the best MCU stuff even. Even some movie like the 2011 Green Hornet movie, Michel Gondry is doing some stuff in that that’s cooler than almost any action scene in a MCU movie, and the end chase is where the car gets cut in half is pretty great, if an MCU movie had a chase scene that good it’d be talked about for years.

Although, this isn’t the classic team, or even the Dark Reign team. Also, I’m not crazy about all the “Sooooo that’s a thing” humor in the trailer, but it’s 2024, that battle was lost years ago, and you’re just going to have to tolerate some of that in your movies. Back in 2018, I got about half way through Deadpool 2 and I swore to myself if I ever saw Wade Wilson again it would be too soon. But I saw Deadpool and Wolverine last month with family and friends and ended up enjoying it a lot. So I’m still willing to give Marvel a chance.

At some point after watching so many MCU films, I went and watch the first Sam Raimi Spider-Man again, and it just felt so refreshing. Just a stand-alone movie, focused on the titular character, and it's not part of some big universe and being used as a vehicle to introduce another character that's going to pop up in a related movie. The first Iron Man movie is in a similar situation.

Iron Man was good, much better than I expected. Iron Man 2 felt like fluff, I didn't like Iron Man 3 very much Incredible Hulk was pretty good, better than the Eric Bana one in terms of dumb hulk action. Captain America 1 was a formulaic WWII movie, Captain America 2 is the most overrated one in the MCU in my opinion. Captain America 3 was an avengers movie and was mostly enjoyable because cameos. I like GOTG 1, it's my favorite, so I can't say I'm immune to dumb marvel humor, but I think it's really because it's the most "out there" of the MCU, it's got different characters that aren't just knockoffs of other more popular characters, and because it's set in space. Mixed feelings about 2 and haven't seen 3 Thor movies were kind of baseline OK, 3 was good the first time I saw it, but doesn't hold up on repeated viewings I don't think. Avengers 1 is legit good, it references everything that came before without all those previous movies feeling like homework, Avengers 2 wasted ultron and James Spader. 3 and 4 were a great way to wrap up this franchise, I've rewatched them a few times and they didn't bother me much. The 3 spider man movies were likewise ok, not as good as Tobey's first and second movie (unsurprisingly) I think, taken together, the MCU movies were mostly "good enough", even the bad ones didn't make me angry or not have a good time. The marvel humor has always been there, but is much more pronounced after phase 1. I stopped watching marvel movies after Shang-Chi, which I watched on the high seas to figure out what the abomination cameo from the trailer was about, and when it was nothing more than a memberberry I decided I didn't need any more MCU in my life. I stopped watching MCU shows after Falcon and the winter soldier. One thing I will credit the birthday party clowns with on that one, John Walker was the best part of that show, he had an arc, pathos, was relatable, and wasn't drowned out by marvel humor. The writing of that show seemed like it wanted people to hate him, but I don't think that's how most people felt by the end. Honestly, I don't really care about much of anything in this new trailer, but would be nice if they lean more into that flawed relatability. If only I had any faith whatsoever in their ability to deliver on that.
@wesleyhall3554Ай бұрын
Honestly, I'm somewhat hopeful. I enjoyed the trailer. It's not avengers level excitement and I don't think this is some return to greatness, but it seems like it'll be fairly solid. Predictable and quippy, sure. I saw TF one with my kids yesterday. It was really good and wasn't all that kiddie. It was kid friendly, so you may not want to go to the theater, but it's really entertaining.

The first problem with most of the post-Endgame MCU movies and shows is that they're making a lot of characters who are meant to be 99% serious make constant jokes and quips when it's NOT in character for them to do so. The second problem is that most post-Endgame MCU movies demonize anybody who's even remotely to the right of Karl Marx, like a left-wing version of Pureflix.
