Your story of mismatched parts in the 289 you first had to work with reminded me of a 75 Pinto wagon I sort of got forced into in college. For whatever reason, I didn’t quite grasp that being a poor college student should have translated into not abusing the car you had to keep you out of a Pinto wagon. Anyway, the clutch went out on the Pinto. The mechanic shop doing the replacement told me when I picked it up that he’d never seen such a collection of Vega and Dodge parts crammed together in a Ford. A few years later I drove a fair amount of miles in Broncos spanning from 86 to 95. All had injected 302s. All ran good and handled all the abuse they were subjected to. The 94-95s ran pretty smooth with pretty decent power.

This is my favorite truck ever. My grandpa had a yellow one with an automatic and I grew up sitting in that thing. I have a million memories of pretending it was a rocket ship or a sailing boat, so its always great to see one being treated well.

My first pickup was a 66 International Crew cab I swapped my uncle most of a summer of chasing chokers on a logging crew for. He and I freshened up the worn out 345 and slapped a set of maypop tires (with another 2 sets in the back) and drove it from Western Washington to north central Wyoming. Changed the motor in 1984 and kept that Rusty beast til I sold it in 2004..

I had 1972 Ford F350 XLT Lariate extend cab with 390 4V 4bbl hand choke carb V8 with rare Manual transmission 4 foward gears plus column shift , 411 rear end gears 2 wheel drive and big 100 gallon back seat fuel tank ! Got it 1993 after Cousin Jerry past away , had inherited from estate too and fix up too! It was Navy Blue body plus interior , made it tow truck serivce also put Hommes Wrecker , 2 1978 1 ton rears ends put 414 ratios gears costume made plus floor shifter with Creeper 4 speed Manual Transmission from 1968 1 ton International pick up truck called D18 with Racing Clutch and extra fuel tank 65 gallon on Frame rail on left side under box! Plus put fuel tap extra fuel gauge to for extra fuel tank also RPM gauge plus had 4 drums wheel brakes too plus had restored in 2005 sold to brother In Law to take shows too! The old Ford was 5 to 10 mile per gallon on gas fuel mileage ! Got different Wrecker truck now since 2005 and a 1994 Dodge D350 Extension Cab Desiel big 6 cylinders!

I have an original Pertronix module installed in my OEM distributor on my '68 Ford Galaxie's 390 V8. It's been in there for 13 years now, and I've yet to have any issues with it. I also upgraded the coil to the Pertronix Flamethrower coil, so I was able to cut out the resistor wire that powers the coil and give it a full 12-volts. Which makes the spark *far* stronger than it ever was when it was stock. Best upgrade ever for an old car -- and because it fits inside the original distributor, you can't tell that it's not 100% stock.

My brother Tim (R.I.P.) had owned various Ford pickups from a '53 F-100 to a 2003 F-250 dual cab. He bought the 1953 F-100 in 1975 and had plans to restore it when he passed in 2009. He bought an '03 F-250 dual cab brand new. I think it was the only vehicle he bought new. He owned it til his passing in '09 as well. I think my sister-in-law still owns that 2003 F-250 dual cab, but the '53 F-100 is long gone. I miss that truck

Enjoy all your videos. I am in the midst of getting my 75 F-150 that's been in the family since it was new back on the road. Just pulled the 390 out of it to put in new gaskets and freeze plugs. I'm upgrading the 4bbl carb and the ignition system and putting a newly rebuilt C6 back on it. What I'm having trouble with is finding is the bed. The old one is too rusted to save, it's a LWB with two tanks, if you come across one let me know. I live in Texas.

the FE engines are really awesome - its sad that they didnt get to have a very long run due to emissions (not counting the 360 - the 390 block w/ 352 rotating assembly) they really come alive with a 4 barrel and good ignition. with that c6, you will be able to pull anything. ill keep my eye out for a bed for sure! the problem up here is that a good bed is always attached to a good truck!

1974 F100 was the very first car I bought when I was 14, back in 1990. I bought it for $100 with my paper route money from the Free Bee ads in NW Ohio. Also my first father/son project. Unfortunately 14 year old me didn't like having to work on it in the stone and gravel and it ended up at the crusher.

I set timing by pulling all the plugs... higher cranking speed. I hook up my light, crank the engine and set the timing, why cranking with the starter. Put the plugs back in and recheck the timing with a running warm engine.... it always spot on. Year old gas will not hurt anything.

+Old Car Alley it’s a couple years old, not a sealed system. You must have a beater starter than me. I can only hit 400 rpm with my starter and I’d be afraid of burning it up a bit

Our gasaholl is better in storage than old gas. It loses octane about a point per month and evaporates instead of condensing moisture. I got a big schooling on that about a year back.

thats a hard one for sure. your best bet would be to get one of those belt straps to hold the pulley, then hit the nut with an impact.

i once had a 78 f 150 with a 71 302 OLD granny 4 speed. 13 different colors ran great never used a drop of oil never knocked or pinged but you could out pull it with a 10 speed bicycle. so one day i tore it down and ever skirt was laying in the oil pan.

Something you may like..a friend used to do this...burp the cooling system...before the belts on, but after coolant is added, he would put a longer belt on the world pulley, then, with a pulley on a shaft on a drill, then the wp for a couple minutes...usually, air pockets are burped away. Love your work!

Is that a T-5 trans? I put a M5ODR2 (from a '93 F150) in my 79 F100 as an upgrade from the 3 speed column shift. I would be interested to see how you adapted to a hydraulic clutch, as that took some serious calculating for me to get the right throw and matched to the right wilwood master cylinder. Love the videos! Keep it up.

it is indeed a t5 trans! and a 4 banger mustang unit at that. been in there for awhile now - as long as a guy doesnt clutch dump it, they seem to last. my set up uses the original mechanical components from the truck. very simple to do with an oldschool block - just need an adapter for the bellhousing and a custom drive shaft. for the roller 5.0 engine, you lose that threaded clutch pivot point on the block, so i had to use a retrofit unit that bolts to the bell. i still used the same bell with adapter plate because the mechanical action on the f100 set up is different than on the mustang cable. ill have to hunt around, i believe i have a short video that explains what i did. it was done extremely low buck!

James Bascombe, I used slave cylinder part # 360016 which is metal rather than plastic like most now days. Also, I cut the inlet fitting, welded on some 1/4 inch pipe to extend it, then welded adapter part # 640281. This eliminates the leak prone press fitting and enables one to connect/disconnect with the trans bolted up.

James Kmenta original 289's are really hard to find now days. But easy to build with a 302 block. In fact the 302 blocks have a longer skirt. Stabilizes the rotating assembly better I feel. My 289 is a 64 289 block. I also like the older blocks. They are stronger. Unless u get an aftermarket block.

Hey thunderhead I have an OEM 86 bronco got a few questions maybe I could pick u brain alil.. I picked up the bronco after sitting for 11+ years I believe I have a massive vacuum leak but really can't find it did a few things to try and find it smoke test nothing and I'm really struggling any ideas

Another little note, unless you're super picky and as long as you have #1 at TDC it doesn't matter where the rotor points as long as you put the #1 plug where it is pointing and you're going in the right direction, it's pretty pointless to pull the distributor in and out..in and out, stick a screwdriver in the hole trying to turn the drive, etc.

Although this is true, there is only one way the distributor looks look in the engine - also, you only have so much room for the vacuum advance canister to fit. Ideally I place that where I would have some level of adjustability. These two reasons are why I do what I do.

Does the electronic fuel pump need a return line back to the tank? I had bought a new holly 650cfm with vacuum secondaries for my 390cid '76 highboy and i don't remember having to adjust anything but the idle screw. Amazing how much more power the engine had with that holly but still not like the mechanical secondaries in the 455 engine my brothers '78 pontiac grand prix. That car when those secondaries kicked in it threw you back in the seat!

electric pumps do need a return line to avoid pressure creep at idle, and to extend the life of the pump. the only ones that do not are these junk parts store units. i generally only use these as a backup, but this timing cover set up does not accept a mechanical pump. all the vane pumps like the holley, quick fuel, carter, and summit units will benefit from a return line. in the coming month, i plan to switch this truck over to that set up as well with the parts store pump as a backup.

If that engine is from a bronco, I may be mistaken but I dont think it would have a roller cam. It would be the same block as those in the cars that do have the roller cam. I didn't hear if u sed but mabey u added a roller cam.

I have a 1977 F150 CUSTOM regular cab 8 foot box. Was my step dads truck. Has the original 302 in it. I plan on restoring it in memory of my step dad. I love how you explain what to do for an engine that has been sitting for awhile. BUT my truck has sat for a bit over 3 years. Any advice on how to make sure I don't screw up anything? Factory it WAS an automatic but is now a 4 speed. Any and ALL advice is greatly appreciated. BTW, Names Joe.

i really hope so, i just put it up on blocks to start working on it. have to modify something on the diff, the brake system, and of course drop in the engine. maybe vacuum out the mice corpses if i get to it, ha!
