Some Cars are Definitely better than others when it comes to what has potential and what doesnt - we enjoy stuff that runs with minimal effort & new parts, so this is what we go after!!!

You helped answer a big question I had. Years ago here in Michigan the DNR did a study on how far the average “sportsman” would walk from their car to go hunting and fishing. It was 25 yards.

That's just Soooo crazy what you can find rotting under a tarp in a backyard. Long story short, I'm french (and my dream car would be a Mustang GT390 S Code), and I came out in the US last year to shoot a movie in California and Nevada (I'm a sound guy). Every f...in' village in the middle of nowhere in nearly abandonned old miners town were full of old cars you can only dream about in Europe. And then I discovered Dylan, Classic Mustang, and the evil twins : you and junkyard dig, and realized that buying an old car was not that expensive. Since then, I'm planning on saving bucks, buying a plane ticket, come here and try to find one to fix, before having it on a boat to France. That would be the hell of a trip, and honestly, a hell of a memory sticked with the car.

I've found that it's pretty easy to get cheap vehicles. I've already gotten myself two free motorhomes that were litteraly two house down from where I live. I know that doesn't seem too exciting, but one of them has a 440, which I have some fun plans for. One of my neighbors a few houses down also has an old Chevy truck that's been in his backyard since before I was born! So I'm gonna see if he'll sell that one to me. And I bought myself a classic Cadillac for $200 from my shop teacher a few months back, and that car has been loads of fun. My friends and I are also reviving a 1978 Mercury Bobcat that's been buried in his backyard since 1998. So yeah, finding fun vehicles to work on is pretty easy, you just gotta look and ask around. Also I can't wait to see that Satellite! I haven't seen a car so sunken into the ground in a long time either, so I imagine that's gonna be a lot of fun!

Back in the early 1980's I built and drove a 1970 GTX 383 4 speed... Sweet ride! I've always been a Ford and Dodge/Plymouth man. the 383 to me was the sweetest dodge motors, right cam and it makes big torque.

Been on the Iowa abandoned images page for years and never really thought about looking up the owners of vehicles. I have gone up and knocked on doors or left a card with a note on vehicles. Bought a few over the years that way. Bought my 77 F250 Supercab that way off the back of a car lot. Sat there for years, found out it didn't have a title, picked it up for $600 and drove it off the lot after about an hour of messing. Of course only got a block away and junk from the gas tank clogged up the fuel filter. I have had it for 9 years now. It has pulled my camper all over Iowa and Missouri. Since the motor and tranny rebuild earlier this year, it has become my daily driver. Now to start on the body work and interior. Thanks for the great videos.

Lol no joke i use google earth and find cars all the time. I found a late 60s chevy truck, 55 or 56 chevy truck, and another one (i cant remember what year approximately it was) in a field literally like a half mile from my house. All I had to do was go down a side road! I drove by the next day. Turns out all 3 have been there since 2005, as that was the first image to picture them there. Google earth is definitely a very useful tool.

your not wrong about them drying up mate. Try living in Australia, all our muscle cars dried up 20 years ago. We have 1/20th your population, less cars made, all rotted away, not much left. You cant go to a junkyard here and find ANYTHING old. not 2 door, not 4 door, it doesn't matter. People scooped them all up years ago and squirrel them away. We also didn't get many selections for a "2 door muscle car" we had Ford with a XB/XC coupe or hardtop, Valiant had a charger (aussie charger) and Holden made a monaro and a few torana's. If you want a 2 door muscle car here they start at 20k for something that looks like that satellite. even 4 door ones are about 8-9k+ Your right, NOW is the time to go out there and get them! I am actually thinking of importing a 69 nova here, because it will still be cheaper to buy one in the states, even though our dollar is like .65c to your dollar, and it costs about 10k to get here with shipping and customs and ill still be infront over trying to get some local aussie muscle car. Keep up the good work bud!

Drive up and if it's there, knock on a door. It's not rocket science, just think human interaction pre-millenials. If it's in a field find out who owns the property, not difficult at all. Have cash in hand. Never waste their time. No point knocking if you're not able to fork cash over that day. Catch them in the moment with hundred dollar bills before they get time to go researching prices.

Its funny to watch how the hunt for old metal goes across the Atlantic. Thus oversized cars had have a preppy design but where never in my closer interest. I'm more in exotics like Iso Facel Jensen Alvis Lambo or the wider known brands as some Mercedes Fiat Alfa Saab Citroen models and some aristocars from Britain. I'd prefer the discreet word-by-word recommendations.

Did Chrysler ever make a 4 barrel 318 car??! I thought not but maybe I’m wrong. I thought they used the 340 for that. In other words 318 with 2bbl was the next step up from the slant 6. And then the low budget performance engine was the 340. And I was always told back in the day that there weren’t many, or there were never any 2 barrel intake 340 engines. That the 340 only came with a 4 barrel carb setup and 318 only came with a 2 barrel carb setup. Fwi I’m only giving my 50 year old opinion. I’m most likely completely wrong. Don’t get mad at me I’m only sharing what I heard from old timers around the block over the years and I’ve messed with a few Mopars and I owned and daily drove a 66 2 door 383 Coronet and a 67 2 door Valiant 273 car with a transplanted 340 in it. The latter car was perfection, like a show car. Not a day went by that someone didn’t ask me if it had a “big block” in it. I suppose I should google before I comment just to appear smarter.....sorry

That’s the biggest thing - gasket sealer the thermo to the thermostat housing and let it set up for 10 to 15 minutes to hold it in place - then tighten it down. 👍 If I use the paper gasket, I always put t gasket sealer on both sides despite one side being stick on style.

You are lucky!! I find a car sitting and car is totally worthless...it is beat up, rusted out, and basically there isn't enough metal on it for scrap metal and when I talk to the owner they want $30,000 for it, because they saw one on Barrett Jackson Auction sell for that much so they think the car that has been sitting in their field for the past 50 years is worth the same, even though theirs is missing parts, hasn't run in 50 years and needs $30,000 worth of work to it just to make it road worthy again!!! OR AND THIS IS WHERE THINGS GET WEIRDER FOR ME! OR I see a car I pass by every day sitting along side the road and watch it! The cardboard sign in the window reads $1500, but the car sits there day after day year after year, and not a single person buys it until I show up with $1000 cash in pocket!!! I ask the owner if he'll take $500 for it cash. It now needs a battery and upon closer inspection it has four bald tires that are now all flat and there is a ton of run in places that shouldn't be hard to fix, but still a pain in the butt enough to make it a nightmare! USUALLY these cars are hiding other problems like they DO NOT have brakes on them, and the thing hasn't been started in 10 to 15 years anyhow! And when I ask if "he will take $500" again I get told that the price of the car is NOW $2500 the way it sits even though the sign (faded) clearly reads $1500 from years before.....and then the weirdness happens, because USUALLY on those cars I walk into one of my buddy's shops a week or month later, as they are telling me about the car they just bought for $300 or $500 and there to my surprise IS THE SAME F**KING CAR, that I was trying to buy, but when I talked to the same prior owner, the douche bag wouldn't budge off $1500 or his inflated $2500 price for a car that was only worth around $500 to start with!!! I have watched MORE CARS than I can count slip through my fingers this way, only to see my friend buy it for the same amount I was offering for a car that literally nobody else wanted!!! And like I say I have had this happen to me so many times now on more cars than I can count!!!!! And if that isn't bad enough then there are the two "adding insult to injury" things that have happened to me a lot!! Which goes ONE OF TWO WAYS!! I find a car or truck I like, and want to buy it, but I don't have the money on me RIGHT THEN AND THERE!!! So I give the guy what I have in my pocket to "hold the car" until I get back later, and by the time I get back the car an hour or week later (If I ask the owner for a week there is NO REASON I WILL NOT BE BACK) is gone by the time I get back!! In one case I found a 1971 C10 Chevy pick up the guy was asking $150 for it! I handed him $75 and made a list of things I would need to DRIVE the truck off his lot! I went to my one friend's house got a spare rim from him and then went a bought a new tire and battery for the truck and stopped at the bank to grab the other $75 I needed to finish paying the guy for the truck! I get back to his house to toss the battery in the truck, and throw the tire on it, and sure enough the truck and the owner are gone!!!! It took me two days to locate the owner, and get my money back, but the worst part about this is I was now stuck with a battery, wheel and tire for a truck I didn't even own.....and I probably WOULD NOT have gotten my money back, but the guy HAD given me the title to the truck so he needed that for the guy who did end up with it, so it boiled down to "my money back or else" kind of thing!!! In the other case (like I said there is a "two part" to this story) I found a 1940 Ford Coupe and the guy was asking $300 for it! I gave him $150 to hold it for me and told him "I will be back Friday with the rest of the money to get it out of here" and the guy shook my hand and was seemingly pleased by the deal WE had agreed to on a Wednesday before!!!!! Friday afternoon comes and I am all excited to take delivery of my "new car" and when I get to his house I notice the car is gone, but stupid me thinking he just pulled it back in his garage out of sight I knock on his door!! There is no answer I walk back to the garage and that is when I notice his wife on the back deck of their home, she takes one look at me, then looks away to where I see his worthless lying hide standing a few feet away!!! He comes up to me apologizing about selling the car has he hands me back my $150!! Sorry but if you make a deal then STICK TO THE F**KING DEAL, is kind of my thing!! And I have had a lot of cars slip from my reach because of some two timing jerk who lied to me right through his tooth!!! I get it that they don't want to be "stuck with a car", but I already gave these jerks HALF OF THE MONEY UP FRONT, so why would I just "walk away from it" and NOT TAKE OUR DEAL SERIOUS???????? Do these idiots think people will just give them money for nothing and NOT take them serious about it!!! In my world money doesn't grow on trees and I don't always walk around carrying $30,000 on me at any given time!! In fact when I normally "stumble onto these cars" it is often by pure chance I see them in the first place!! So I didn't have time to go to the bank or I have to run home for a stash of cash I have sitting on my nightstand or wherever!!! And if I tell you "I will be back Friday" and today is Wednesday you can bet your ass I am not just going to "forget" to come pay you the rest of your money!!! Lastly there was a time I found a motorcycle which happened to be a 1978 Honda CB750K which I had a 1977 model of the same bike, which needed parts OR could be used for parts at the same time I found the 1978 model year bike! I read the ad in the paper that said "1978 CB750K Honda, needs work, $400" and thought to myself that this would be perfect as I would have two bikes to build one out of and spare parts to boot!!!! I made the calls, got to the guys' house to look at the bike and it was rough!! It was in a lot worse shape that he had mentioned and to be honest it really wasn't worth more that $200 upon looking at it!! Again bald tires, ripped seat, and some other damage from it being laid down a couple of times....it wasn't as "great" as he made it out as on the phone or in the ad!!! So I asked him "Would you take $250 for it?" and he gave me the "him, ho, and BUT AAAAAAAAH" routine and then he said "The bike belongs to a friend of mine let me call him and come back in an hour!" And hour later I show back up at this guy's house again, the bike still sitting in the driveway right where we left it! BUT NOW I talk to the guy selling it and suddenly he claims the price on the bike is NOW WORTH $800 and all I have on me is $400 cash which is what the original ad was listed for!!!! In the end I walked away from making any "deal" with him!! Hell at that point maybe the bike was stolen for all I knew!! He was kind of acting weird about it!! A week later he contacted me and asked me if I was still interested in the motorcycle and I told him "No, but thank you", and for the next month his ad was still listed but now with the $800 price tag which apparently he never did sell it for that much money the last I heard! So yes you guys are lucky!! You find things I can only dream about, and you get them for prices I would never see!! In my world people are jerks and I am always stuck spending more money on crap that wasn't worth it to begin with to the point where I have lost a lot of interest in old cars anymore!! Too many dirty deals, idiots that think "Shit is valuable" and idiots that are unrealistic about crap!! And meanwhile the list of cars I can name by name I have lost because idiot #1 wanted to sell me a car for $3800 that a week from now my friend will buy for $300 and I was at least offering him MORE THAN THAT, but at the time "that wasn't good enough" apparently!! And I have had that happen plenty of times too!! I offered one guy $800 for a car (1968 Delta 88) that he was asking $1500 for and three days later it was sitting in my friend's shop where he'd bought it for just $500!!!! So I guess you really can't fix stupid!!!
