I'm glad I ran across this review. I knew that Thunderstone existed and that Tom & Co. liked it, but since there are so many variations, I didn't know where to start. This definitely looks like the starting point. Looks like it would be grasp-able for people who are familiar with Ascension, although it does up the complexity factor significantly (not because this is especially complex, but because Ascension is so darn simple). Now to see if I can get the wife to try it with me. Thanks, Tom and Melody. (BTW: You mention DC Deck Building here, but you've never reviewed it; would like to see that one done!)

Fun seeing all of the old artwork from Warlord being reused in this game. Great artists.

An excellent, thorough, yet well condensed review! I'd like to add that if you have already played Thunderstone or Thunderstone Advance, then it's a lot better idea to pick up Thunderstone Advance: Towers of Ruin set instead of this one (a lot bigger variety). In any case, in my opinion, Thunderstone (Advance or the first edition) still stands as the best deckbuilder out there.

My group greatly enjoys Runewars, but we don't get to play it that often because it's so long. So we got Rune Age for our "deckbuilding" game (I'm trying to get 1 game from every category for my collection). I really enjoy it but god it needs more expansions.

As i only play original Thunderstone online, this was still interesting review. I like that plan action. But the artwork. hm.. i like the old one better. Though we know it is still better than the Ascension :)))

I know Tom didn't suggest the starter set as an expansion but I see what looks like a great expansion in it. I have Thunderstone Advance and would really like to get more variety for it. The two other Advance expansions look to add more complexity and fiddlyness while this adds simple, direct and useful variety. I do play mostly with newer players and my kids so that has an affect on what I want.

Ohh.. but i want that rolling sparks card *-* And the back of items is now red (RAWR!) so no dude is reminded of their insecurities. Salmon background looked great, IMO.

So what is the best expansion to add to this first? There seem to be a lot of options and I was wondering if there was good order to buy them in.

I agree Wolfie64. I think Rune Age is an underrated deck builder. It needed that first expansion badly and would really shine with one more. However, I don't think it sold well enough for FF to give it any more attention when their living card games are making them so much money.

I love Tom's reaction when Melody says that she prefers Legendary to DC Deckbuilder.

Is it best to start with this or start with just go with Towers of Ruin??

Guys i got a question. Does anyone knows if magic attack multiples per magic effect? Like when having a tower hero +2 magic attack and 3 village rolling spark cards how much is your final attack power? Is it 2+2+2+2=8 or is +2 of hero's magic attack added to every spell (3*4) and having a total of 2 +4 +4 +4 =14?

Jimt0n Rofl I pronounced it drawt too. Draught is not the way you would EVER spell or pronounce "draft" in American English.

Fyi, tom, draught is pronounced "draft" not "drot". Besides being a drink, its also the old name for checkers :)

Legendary > DC Deck Building Game. I mean, come on, it's called "DC Deck Building Game." It's like they shipped the game with a placeholder title, so lazy.
