@@ti8ick One thing is that Bricky while entertaining isn't very accurate. He did a bad job explaining the mechanicus faith. The Machine God is a god of knowledge that permiate space but the Omnissiah (get it omni - messiah) is actually the emperor who the mechanicus believe to be the avatar, the messiah, the machine god as a man. Like how there is the father the son and holy spirit in christianity. The mechanicus are viewed as asmi-heretical and tollerated by the church because they make weapons but its important to note they don't not believe in the emperor. He was a great scientist who could fix machines just by touching them (according to legend) and so they worhsip him in their own way.

In the late stages of the siege of the Imperial Palace Alicia along with her personal retinue were brought to have an audience with the Emperor. Led to the inner Sanctum by the Adeptus Custodes no one knows what took place, but one of the biggest markers was Alicia's hair changing from Brunette to White. Sister Argenta in Rogue Trader is lore breakingly chill tbh. There should be a _lot_ more purging with the heresy that she sees going on. The reason why all the Sisters that we see in promotional stuff all have white hair is because they're all part of (or branched off of) a specific group of the sisterhood, Order of Our Martyred Lady.
@dagonofthedepths10 ай бұрын
Shes not lore breaking. There are plenty of books with her type of chill I read. Like Sister Miriya was part of the whole Sisters of Battle: Omnibus and she worked with a heretical psyker she was suppose to be guarding for execution to stop a priest she was technically suppose to be protecting and her whole coven went along with it. They really needed to. That priest was nuts and all and she wasn't kind to the psyker to say the least but not all of them are so fanatical they will let zeal overcome duty. There are degrees how fanatical Sisters get and Argenta really is more middle of the road. That and you have authority over her. But for every Sister that would attack a Salamander or Space Wolf chapter because grr barbarian mutants, you get one that will even work with aliens for the greater good. I mean 2 of there hero units did. Saint Celestine trusted Yvraine to revive Bobby-G and Ephreal Stren pretty much has a Harliquinn as a bff.
@Sense00810 ай бұрын
No it's not. Sisters from non-militant orders (Hospitaller, Patronus, Dialogus, Famulous) like Argenta's often operate in very small groups or even alone. They may WANT to purge every single heretical thing they encounter, but they are not stupid or suicidal, they have to pick their battles. It's not that won't enthusiatically bolter down every single heretic they encounter if they get the chance. And very non-militant order also has basic sororitas weapon training, and know how to use weapons,, they just have very different roles and traning beside that.

I'll try to keep this bite-sized like your dives into the lore! As for books it depends if you mean novels - arbitorian on youtube has good advice for where to start - or other books with source material! I was introduced to 40k around 1997 or 98 as a kid, through the two lore and rule books in the 2nd edition box of the game. This was a great place to start since it was a few years before the novels really started, so there were few other options, haha. A rulebook with lore could be great to revise what you've learned - or just rewatch videos sometime - because so many factions and concepts like the warp interact with each other. Since you asked in another video, you can now see some of the 40k humour. The lore and game grew and refined a lot around 2000. Some of the memes are probably lore - for better or worse (when it's worse it's called grim derp by some) - and other memes are from bricky/the community, as he points out in his space marine legions video. 40k started off as a satire, and there's plenty of irony, like the Emperor trying to wipe out religion (which interacted with the warp) only to get worshipped. A lot has been added and revised over the years, but most retcons are hidden or avoided in a universe where someone's gonna have a different perspective. It's always been fairly morally grey and grim in a lot of places, however arguable the evils are to some

Beginner friendly book series suggestion: Ciaphas Cain, Hero of the Imperium. Caiphas Cain is a Commissar, attached to an Imperial Guard regiment. Commissars are normally meant to be political officers who enforce discipline amongst the troops, generally they're hated and feared because they'll shoot you for disobedience or cowardice or whatever. But Ciaphas is actually a pretty chill and nice guy, he really wanted a quiet life but accidentally became a hero whilst trying to run away. Now he has to live up to to his rep, because being found out would be worse. He tends to think that maybe it's a good idea if his troops think he cares about them, that way they'll protect him and not 'accidentally' shoot him in the back. His books have a good supporting cast and a lot of flashes of dark humour, plus some hilarious footnotes by the Inquisitor who's editing his memoirs. Cain is the nearest thing 40k has to a Flashman or Blackadder type character.

Without spoiling key points: One observation Cain makes in his Memoir is that his unit is fighting a lot harder and is far more competent than his reports suggested. In his mind, he dismissed it as the reports being inaccurate. The Inquisitor, whose job is to see through any form of bullshit (Innocence Proves Nothing) writes something along the lines if "You idiot, they're fighting harder because you're inspiring them."

@adambman210 ай бұрын
A few other notes for what it's worth! Space Marines are pretty much poster boys for the whole game and they've been in it from pretty much the start. Most space marines do not worship the Emperor like much of the Imperium does. While the marines are often regarded as warrior monks, most of them see the Emperor as a great man, but are no less loyal... mostly lol. This could be because marines can typically live for centuries, and the Emperor is the gene father of their own gene father, their primarch. That said, some chapters' heritage have been forgotten or kept secret, and some may only think they know who their primarch is... There are exceptions, like the Black Templars, who do worship the Emperor, and disregard some other rules or guidelines too lol While marines are longstanding posterboys, and enjoy all that, I think that the Mechanicus and Sisters of battle factions say a lot about Warhammer 40000 and typical views or themes in the Imperium that stand out to us most. Both factions have been in the lore for ages but I think Mechanicus were only playable in the last decade or so, same with the Custodes, the Emperor's bodyguards and more. The way people slap their tv, computer or car, or beg for it to start seems to me like a tiny seed that could lead to machine spirit prayers and rituals after a few millenia, haha

My favorite lore tidbit about the Knights is that the pilot connect to the Knight via a neural interface called "Throne Mechanicum". The first time the pilot interface with the Throne is called "Ritual of Becoming", where they are left for an entire night connected to the Throne so that the pilot can "fight" with the previous Knight pilots for control. Some pilots go mad, other outright dies, but all those that survive the ordeal are forever changed, their personality forever warped by the previous pilots. The imprint left on the Throne is then united with the other conciousness present in the throne to "challenge" the next one that will sit on it (usually a son or a cousin since they are basically medieval royalty)

It was the one type of worship He allowed in the Imperium, because it would've been too destructive to try to destroy them. 40k is more of a setting which stories that can be told in. There are continuous plot lines and all but a majority of books are written with non-legacy characters in more or less isolated story lines. Like an example is the Varangantua series which takes place in, well, the city Varangantua on the planet Alecto. You can say how important the city is and all but at the end of the day it's just 1 city on 1 world in an empire with a million of them. But it lets you tell cool Dick Tracy style detective stories which was the point. Like Bloodlines by Chris Wraight was a great jaded cop story. It has the effect where you can tell whatever story you want to, but they don't always jell perfectly together. Like one of my fav books, Vaults of Terra: The Carrion Throne also by Chris Wraight (He's my fav author :P) had an inquisitor on Terra not know about half the other primarchs which felt weird because if anyone should know it's an inquisitor that's bumping heads with the High Lords themselves and the Adeptus Custodes. Other books with lower ranked inquisitors kind of contradict this. Also if your worried about spoilers in this I would say there isn't any with a "but". Basically it's the Varangantua situation in reverse. The Kronus Expanse is on the but end of the galaxy. If you look at a galactic map of 40K, the extreme edges of it are pretty much undiscovered no fly zones where you can get incredibly rich and incredibly dead if you go poking around but it's impact on the larger 40K universe is somewhat lacking and that's intentional. The issue is 40k likes to push the major races. Pretty much the ones that they can make money off of. But all those races are distinct and it kind of spoils encounters a bit when you know enough about the fiction. Like as soon as you see a symbol on a wall or you find out someone has a grey bulbous head, you know what's up which sucks because it steals the surprise out of it. I don't think Bricky really goes that in depth other than telling you certain races exist but they are overused to the point where the mystery is gone unfortunately. Just sucks when you get a 40k haunted house book and 5 pages in you know exactly how it's going to end because of how tight the fiction is.

Blue (and Green) are the most common color simply because the large majority of the books and lore cover the Ultramarines (blue) and the Dark Angels (green) chapters. Between the two of them they have like 90+ books and 3 dozen main characters, with "very" devoted fans circling each. ... That being said those are only two chapters of ...thousands. Name your color scheme, including New York old school taxi Cab (yellow white and black checkerboard) and there is a chapter that uses it. So much so, that they often overlap, as for example the Salamander's Chapter is also Green, and "almost" as popular as the Dark Angels.

16:05 that daemon blade cannot be destroyed. The grey knights then locked it up in a locked chest in a stasis chamber in a locked room. And when they checked on it some time later, it was almost out of the room. Hence it has to be held on by someone

Bricky makes a mistake about the Omnissiah and the Machine God. They are NOT the same entity. The Adeptus Mechanicus believe that the Emperor IS the Omnissiah, which is some kind of incarnation of the Machine God, a bit like a messiah/prophet/chosen/avatar. So, when they praise the Omnissiah, they praise the Emperor. But, indeed, for the Imperium, there is no "Machine God" outside of the AdMech. Still, people generally believe in the machine spirits. And it is true that if the Imperium was not dependant to an extreme point of the AdMech, they would declare them heretics in a blink.
@martinbowers68527 ай бұрын
4:35 the admech belive the Emperor is the avatar of the omnissaiah and that is how they get away with their (almost) heretical religion. They are also technically not part of the Imperium, more like a vassal/partner state with their own worlds and stuff. That was an eldar wraith titan they are powered/piloted by an eldar who has died by catching their soul at the moment of death in a special stone that gets plugged into the titan.

Not all the sisters of battle are blonde. The sisters are divided into orders, similar to how the space marines are divided into chapters. Only one order, the order of the ebon chalice requires them to die their hair bkonde, another the order of our martyred lady allows there sisters to do it as well bit its not required. The story behind it is actually something you mentioned, its because Alicia Dominica, the leader of Goge Vamdires bodyguard who killed him when they where told what he was doing was wrong,. Alicia hair turned white when she was brought into the throne room and saw the Emperor on the throne. The order of our Mertyred lady are the sisters equivalent of the ultra Marines x they are the poster girls. Note if the sister has purple eyes it means she might be from the world of Cadia.

Space Marines can't be woman (Not that they didnt try to. They just kept dying during the creation process) the closest thing to a female space Marine thats more badass in my opinion, because they are normal humans, are the Sisters of Battle.

@@Hello-bp8dx I know what you mean. Although I do think they really cleverly integrated old-school dwarf psychology/habits into a new race of AI, robots and clones. As much as I used to love the old squats from decades ago, the Votann make more sense - especially as 40K is much darker now than it was back then. (Back then, 40K included a lot of goofy stuff, Space Marines arresting people for graffiti etc).

19:13- Yes……. but it’s kinda weird!?! So yeah, there’s a person inside of it. But (from everything I’ve ever heard about it) they don’t really control it with their feet or hands……. They have to use their minds to control it! But there are also all the minds of the other pilots from the past!?! And you need to be able to get them on your side to make it work!?! I don’t know….. very confusing and it sounds more like AI tech to me!!!

Blue pigment is easier/cheaper to use hence why the Ultramarines are the poster boys 😂
@shaggybaggums9 ай бұрын
In the early days, red, orange, and yellow paints were notoriously weak, especially Bad Moon Yellow and Blood Angel Orange. This was largely due to it being more difficult to get strong enough pigments that were non-toxic for those colours. Bleached Bone had it's moments too since it was prone to separating and the pigment settling at the bottom more than usual. Space Wolf Grey could be quite chalky too, making it tricky to blend the highlights. And painting Imperial Fists was just a monumental pain in the arse. This is going back to the early 90's though, I can't speak for modern paints. Been out of that side of the hobby for decades now.

8:08 good allegory from you with the car, though the specific is (iirc) that these ironstriders are equipped with an actual perpetual motion engine. they do not need to be turned off. the guy who invented/got that machine to work didnt share his knowledge, because knowledge is very directly power with the cult mechanicus. then he died. now no one knows how their perpetual motion engine works, so you better hope they dont break down.

So Ultramarines aren't the default but they are the most numerous. Many loyalists from traitor legions were folded into the Ultramarines and its rumored many of the Marines of the lost second legion were as well. Secondly the worlds of ultramar that made up Guilliman's empire before the Emperor found him had limited range ftl between them so have very little genetic drift between them, thus the Ultramarine geneseed has far more compatibility with recruits than most others so have far fewer failures at the surgery level. The loyalists from traitor legions are why utterly mad weirdo chapters occasionally come out of the Ultramarines. Example are the Firehawks who always claimed to be a Ultramarine successor chapter but testing of the geneseed says otherwise having many defects that don't exist in Ultramarines. The Firehawks vanished into the warp and many believe they are the source of the fiery phantoms that on rare occasions appear to aid beleaguered outnumbered Imperial forces the Legion of the Damned
