The Warhammer part of the name (please correct me if i'm wrong) is because the first warhammer, Warhammer Fantasy, had a god or guy who used a really cool warhammer. The brand name 'warhammer' was then adapted into Warhammer: Rogue Trader, a tabletop rpg if i remember, which was basically the usiverse of Warhammer Fantasy but in the far future. Rogue Trader then got adapted into Warhammer: 40k.

Important things to keep in-mind: - While every faction is some flavor of evil, factions like the Imperium, Eldar, T'Au will have exceptions and sub-groups that land a bit more in-line with what WE would consider as "good" (ex: Primarch of the Ultramarines, Roboute Guilliman, is desperately trying to steer the Imperium on a more logical and less psychotic path while trying not to piss off the more fascisistic leaders into fighting against him since he was resurrected and made Lord Commander of the Imperium, and has worked with certain groups of the Eldar/Aeldari) - Bricky gets a few things wrong in this and part 2, he makes a few corrections in his Space Marine Legions and Timeline videos - The plot is CONSTANTLY developing, so parts of this video have been made outdated

To clarify a few quick things: The Primarch of the Ultramarines (blue marines) is named Roboute Guilliman (ruh-boo-tay gill-lee-man). Bricky making funny names for him is a running gag at how easily you can mess up his name and call him something funnier like Ro-booty gorilla-man. The Blood Angels being “gay” for Sanguinius is meant to imply that the Blood Angels legion often have a huge focus on dedicating themselves their legion to their Primarch, Sanguinius, who gave his life to fight Horus and help the Imperium survive. He was one of the best primarch dads to their legion of sons. The Dark Angels one in regards to how they will do everything in their power to prevent any and all of their secrets from getting out, particularly about a splinter group of dark angels who turned traitor during the Horus Heresy known simply as The Fallen. There’s a common joke online that the dark angels are secretly traitors due to the existence of the Fallen, hence the joke Bricky made. They’re so strict about ensuring their inner circle secrets stay secrets that they are known to abandon entire campaigns just to deal with mere rumours. They’re a lot better in recent lore but back then they often got on the bad side of the Imperial officials because they were so shady And yes, in the official lore, there are no female space marines because all the primarchs were made male and thus their genetics are incompatible with the female body, meaning they would be guaranteed to die on the operating table. Outside the offical lore, you’re free to say that your army of space marines are from a chapter made up entirely of women because the best part of the community really doesn’t care about that, we’re just happy to have someone to play the game with and check out how cool your models look

Warhammer has been around for donkeys years, I cant believe how popular it is as it was only over in the UK and was very niche to us severely geeky people - I am 40 and it is the same age as me, that is how old it is. I have started collecting and painting again - its my go to for Zen. The lore is absolute nuts considering we used to play it as kids... I guess you miss the crazy parts when your young! Really really looking forward to Fallout and Warhammer 40k (henry cavill producing) on Amazon TV.

People who bitch about the fact that the Space Marines are only males, tend to forget that the Adepta Sororitas ( Sisters of Battle) are much more badass then the SM, in the lore. Space Marines need all kinds of genetic & cybernetic enhancements to do what they do. Sisters of Battle don't have any of this, they're baseline female humans but they go out and kick the shit out of Chaos Daemons, Traitor Marines and all kinds of Alien species. During the ''Reign of Blood'' and the imperial civil war that occurred then, the Sisters repelled an attack of several Space Marine Chapters, that's speaks volumes on how good they're in battle. Their faith in the Emperor is so strong, that some of them can even perform ''miracles'' and become ''Living Saints'', who are the equivalent of a Daemon Prince and have the ability to return from death. Like for example Saint Celestine, who is pretty much a badass ''warrior angel'' complete with wings made out of psykic energy and a flaming sword, who has died in battle and resurrected to fight again, numerous times. And then there are the Sisters of Silence, who are one of the most OP and elite units of the Imperium. These ladies can even take down a Primarch, using their ''anti-psyker'' ability.

If you want their books that's you go to the Black Library But if you actually want good beginner books that are interesting, I'd recommended: 1. *Horus Rising* (see how the Heresy starts and how great humanity was) 2. *Gaunt's Ghosts* (Great writing, you see how the Imperial Guard operates) 3. *Inquisitor Eisenhorn* (Interesting, written from Inquisitors perspective so lots of mystery and action) 4. *Infinite and the Divine* (Very good writing, shows comedy is present in 40k. Is from Necron perspective)

Yeah, space marines are pretty much a boys only club. You can do whatever you want on tabletop but official lore there isn't any female space marines. Mainly because at the time he never figured it out and now messing with anything the Emperor had a hand in is heresy. You knowing better than your god and all that. Personally, I think that's fine. It makes them and the Sisters unique in their own way. Both having different strengths and weaknesses that equal them out but that's me. Like for the Sisters, they can perform miracles like just deciding their bolt round pierce any armor or ignoring damage through faith alone. Also, 40k doesn't really have a single canon of power scaling. So, some stories a guardsman can kill a space marine with 1 well placed knife throw. In another, 1 will go through 1,000 people without issue. I mention this because he's going off of the tabletop, which is obviously balanced, so you don't have to have a force of 1,000 men per 1 space marine model, but tabletop is pretty much on the weak side. Still, everyone has a different idea in their head what these people can do.

Great place to start getting a VERY rough overview of the factions. Keep going with Bricky for the total basics. Cause 40K started back in '87 there is more than a bit of lore & it has changed MANY times over the years. The Black Templars for example (doesn't matter what changed right now). If you want the more detailed & EXCEPTIONALLY accurate breakdowns, as you already know, check out Lieutin. If you want super accurate lore, but told in a slightly more story telling fashion, Baldermort is the guy to go to. AMAZING work. As someone who has been into this lore since '89 I will vouch for this pairs knowledge & attention to detail. The thing is, the imperium didn’t used to be like this. 10,000 years prior when the Emperor was alive it was a near utopia and humanity even worked with alien races. Once the whole Horus heresy kicked off those so called alien “friends” backstabbed humanity when we were at our weakest. The Imperium is the way it is because of the state of the universe, if it wasn’t it would have fallen long ago.

Cadia was the frontline of the fight against Chaos. An entire world (fortress world) that was dedicated to protecting humanity and exterminating their enemies. They were literally the blockade at the opening of a hell portal (Eye of Terror) in the physical universe. As long as I've been into 40k they were always in the fight and constantly under siege by the forces of Chaos attempting to break into reality. And then the planet got suicide bombed by Abbadon the Despoiler (after Caida beat his ass twice) and broke apart. That led to the rallying cry, "Cadia broke before the Guard did". One of my favorite videos by the Templin Institute (which I'll link) said it perfectly. "For even as the planet split apart, and its remnants were consumed by the Eye of Terror, the red streaks of firing lasguns could still be seen in darkness. The Warhammer part of the name comes from Warhammer Fantasy which was the original Warhammer game. One of the big boy important characters from that universe, Sigmar, wielded the eponymous Warhammer. That universe was killed off by Games Workshop in order to usher in their new fantasy IP, Age of Sigmar (which is somewhat related to the old one), but they have since resurrected it as of like a week ago, in the form of their new tabletop game "The Old World". So, old WH Fantasy is still very much alive through the new tabletop game and of course a bunch of video games that are set in that universe, the biggest of which is probably Total War: Warhammer. If you think you'd be interested in Fantasy, the Total War trailers might be worth checking out, they're pretty cool cinematics.

Cadia is a sore spot for Warhammer 40k fans....so Cadia was a Planet what was basically the front line against Chaos, because it was positioned right outside the Eye of Terror which is a region of Space that is a direct connection to the Warp, thank the Eldar for that. Basically in recent Lore during the current Black Crusade by the Black Legion, Failbadon or Abbadon the Despoiler rammed a moon sized ship into the planet to crack it like an egg.

This is like the 5th time in a week where I hear people asking if there are women Space Marines. I don't know if its a meme or if its a genuine question. I will say based on the body modification, mental indoctrination, and gene seed shenanigans, be happy you can't be a Space Marine. Plus, Sisters of Battle have better aesthetics. Commissars have better lore, Assassins get Black Widow catsuits, and Inquistors can also get a Modified Power Armor, but they "drive" it more than they wear them. Inquisitor Amberley Vail wore power armor similar to space marines in one of the Cain books. And it she didn't even need redundant vital organs jammed in her without anesthesia! Ciaphas sure did a lot of jamming though!!

Wait, I just figured out how you can play as Female Space Marines. The 2nd and 11th Legion. GW intentionally left them Blank to give the players a chance to make their own chapter, lore, and play style. In Canon, they did something so terrible they were struck from all records. You can say they altered their Geneseed. Buy a generic Space Marines box, 3D print some heads (Or take them from the sisters of Battle/Assassins/Militarium) Boom! Female Space Marines!

I really like the way he explained how in WH40K everyone is the villain and that is part of its charm. That's exactly why when I first started playing I chose Chaos. TBH Don't worry about 'catching up' with 40K, even for old farts who have been around since forever only the truly obsessed have absorbed it all. The sane focus on bits and pieces that sound the most fun to them, and slowly branch out from there. There's also a bit of a disconnect between old lore, new lore, and meme lore. Warhammer 40K started off called Rogue Trader, and it was created in 80's Britain by a bunch of nerds. The national outlook at the time was pretty bleak (it's the same environment that gave birth to V for Vendetta and Judge Dredd), and this group of nerds made a setting full of their favorite nerd stuff and give them something to laugh about. So they blatantly stole ideas from other sci-fi settings (Dune and Starship Troopers 'influences' are all over), tossed in political satire (being a fascist, industrial machine that doesn't care about normal people is a common accusation thrown at Thatcher Britain and is the Imperium state of being), and made it so over the top that you just had to laugh at it. This is the old lore. In the late 90's and early 00's, a couple of things converged to shift gears. The company (it grew past a group of nerds to a proper business) realized that they had the ability to make some serious bank, Britain didn't have as desolate of an outlook for the normal people, and western culture was shifting hard into the 'gritty, realistic' portrayal of their stuff. As a consequence, 40K started to cut away the more outrageous parts of their setting, everything started to take itself more seriously, and GW (the company behind 40K) started to realize that someone could do to them what they did to other sci-fi properties so they started to be aggressive in 'defending' their IP. The lore started to expand a _lot_ , not as many goofy things were put in, everything had to start making more sense in a grounded way in universe, and they started to give everything copyrightable names so no one could take the ideas and modify it to their own. This is also the time that the CEO (GW by this time grew big enough to have one of these) outright stated that they were a miniatures company first, game company second and their rules for their game started to reflect that. He lost his position a couple of years later when it was clear that wasn't working. This is the new lore, and has been trucking along these lines until modern times. Then there's the meme lore. Where people throw in stuff that they make up because it either makes more sense to them or they just like it more and take stuff out that they don't like or doesn't make sense to them. They take throwaway lines and make them into big deals, take big deals of the setting and minimize, if not outright ignore them. Internal consistency doesn't matter at all as long as each separate, independent thing is funny. Personally, I like old lore more then the other two. Meme lore is closer to old lore then new lore but it doesn't have enough consistency for me for the setting. New lore takes itself _way_ too seriously (and in turn, makes people take the setting more seriously) for my tastes and leads to the problems like attracting more people who like fascism unironically or are horribly racist. Bricky is a meme lore kindof guy, so while he does get a lot of it right, meme funny takes precedent over consistency, accuracy, or satire.

As much as I like Warhammer, I do miss the days of Games Workshop and White Dwarf largely being focused on TSR and D&D. As a kid I spent as much time in there as I could until my parents got bored and dragged me out.

One big mistake he did was telling people the Emperor colonized the galaxy. He did not do that for the most part. He reunited remnants of humanity left over of the collapse of the Federation of Mankind after conquering Terra. And he needed more than 5000 years to get his act together and conquer it. The Federation collapsed 25k AD because the Aeldari Remnants, the Eldar, literaly murderf***** Slaanesh into existence, warpstorms and turbolences in the warp everywhere made the used FTL unusable and the Iron Men killed most of the human military and huge part of the civillian population (since they made up a huge part of the military, they did most of the heavy work in the Federation military)

If I remember correctly, Game Workshop ( the people who own warhammer ) used to have female space marine models, but the community at the time didn’t buy them, so GW stopped making them and made a lore reason as to why there are no female space marines.

"Can Space Maines be girls, too?" Trying to ignite a civil war right out of the gates, huh ^^? Well, by lore they can't. Because the genetical mutations necessary apparently only work on male bodies. So, at least they could be trans-girls ;) But in truth, it's because back at the very beginning of the franchise, the female models didn't sell, so they got discontinued and the lore got adjust retroactively to explain the all-male brand line. I feel nothing would be lost if they'd change it now, as long as they keep the tone and mood of the grimdark horros, and if they make it happen in-universe. Not overhauling it again and act like it's always been that way. ...and now I wait for those who will tell me how terrible I am and that this will make everything worse. Benchmark so far is calling me a socialist spy who wants to destroy the hobby for thinking that way. Let's see how this comment section is set up ^^.

When you ask about female space means the answer is you don’t want to do that to someone, that’s cruel, there was a planet that tried that out of desperation, the “successful” “female space marines” were shot by their fathers so release them from their pain, what happens if you put male geneic biological growth hormone/genetic enhancements, in a female body? The answer is nothing fucking good, the gene seeds of space brains come from a male, therefore the male body, what happens if you put testicles inside of a woman for no reason, nothing fucking good, To make this worse by the way Gene seed is given to 12-year-old boys to grow with them into a space Marines, Think of it being like super puberty, instead of growing to be about 6 feet maybe, it turns you into 10 feet tall, what do you think super male puberty does to a female body, do you really wanna find out, nothing fucking good. It was only done once in one book out of absolute sheer desperation, and the people who didn’t die from it couldn’t sleep because their body was in that much pain, think about that, there are other female super warriors in Warhammer they don’t need to be female space marines

I’ll also expand on the female space marines thing because it’s a touchy subject to some. The vast majority of people who are to be made into space marines die before completing the change. You are effectively the toughest man on your planet and the gene seed turns you from probably a 6’1ish human into a 7’8+ brick shithouse clone of your primarch who is closer to 8’6+. That mutation kills the vast majority of people, trying to minimize the amount of changes seems to help thus a lot of marines come from the planet of their Primarch’s upbringing. It’s possible but unlikely that the two remaining primarchs were female but we do know Space Marines are sterile purposefully so they couldn’t breed mutant offspring that would pollute the humans because Space Marines aren’t human, and neither are the Primarchs.

Someone was calling GW cowards because they didn't have female Space Marines. They did have female Space Marines in the earlier, way earlier releases. The fan base, although now probably not now, hated them. So after a bit of time, they made the Sisters of Battle, and now they've built it to be the main female faction to play as. Now GW can get away with putting whatever shit out they want but when you are a company just starting off, losing your fanbase is large.

That was like 1st edition and they were just "Female warrior" and "Male warrior". They were more like police warriors in power armour back then, it was super basic. And people didn't hate them, they just weren't getting bought so they were discontinued and the lore shaped around that to make it make sense. GW executed the whole male faction and female faction thing perfectly imo

There is no real reason why Space Marines are only boys (although currently the lore is that they are only boys). In truth SMs are really genderless as they've had so many body mods and it's largely an irrelevant conversation. The fact they are created from their Primarchs DNA doesn't mean they would necessarily be male either, that's not how genetics works. It's currently a hot topic in the boring culture wars arguments going on online about 40k. Plenty of people have converted their own marines to be female though. A good thing about the Tabletop game is that people have always been encouraged to do their own thing.

The real reason in back then female Space Marines miniatures weren't selling at all and were removed completely. As for in-lore explanation - well first when you create an elite fighting force of course you go with males, second is the genetic aspect, as Space Marines basically get their DNA rewritten by the gene-seed, which comes from male Primarchs, and is tailored to change male biology, because it would completely mess up female's organism

Yeah, his accuracy isn't always that great, which can be annoying if it's your faction he's getting wrong. :) But as an entertaining introduction to what otherwise might seem an impenetrable mountain of lore, you can't go wrong with his videos.
