Tiberius' Seaside Villa in Sperlonga

A visit to the imperial Villa of Sperlonga is an amazing opportunity to connect to a specific moment in history by exploring the natural cave along the Lazio coast, adjacent villa and museum that houses the impressive "Hellenistic Baroque" statue groups found on site in 1957. Darius leads you through the grotto and dining experience (central triclinium for the imperial guests located in the central pool of water, surrounded by mythological sculptural groups), and the interpretation of the statuary . It is incredible that the cave described by Suetonius still exists. In his biography of Tiberius, he also names Bayas (Baiae) as a place where historical relics were kept, but I understand that this city unfortunately disappeared from the map.

I love the video but there is a serious factual error in describing Tiberius as in exile before his return to Rome. Exile a formal punishment for various crimes.Tiberius was never subjected to formal punishment, he was merely assigned to military duties in the eastern part of the empire. Augustus was not fond of Tiberius and his assignments in the east were a useful way of keeping him out of the power loop, so to speak. Augustus recalled Tiberius to Rome only after his preferred successors died of natural causes or were killed off.
