Curious as to the source for the box office $$ you reference in your comment. BoxOfficeMojo / IMDB report less than half of that $$ for box office (which nevertheless is still a _huge, huge_ return on the small investment.

Regarding what movie made off their potentially $7 million investment, BoxOfficeMojo www.boxofficemojo.com/title/tt0085549 reports $92 million gross and they only have U.S. numbers on that, so they report the same for "Worldwide" (which of course has to be a larger number, they just don't have it).

@@trysometruth Strange fact: Ive been a fan of Flashdance since 1983 when it came out but I still havent watched it yet from start to finish! Im planning to watch it in the next few days. Ive just been a fan of the music and the music video since then. Ive seen loads of clips from the movie of course, like all the famous ones such as the restaurant scene and the underwear scene.

​@@ajs41 Flashdance was panned by critics when it first came out (one sign of that truth is the 36% critic's rating on RottenTomatoes.com), but it's a movie that won-over most people that saw it (some of whom would probably be embarrassed to admit how many times they've watched it). 79,000 ratings on RottenTomatoes from regular folk average to a 61% fresh rating. Not gigantic, but obviously way better than the critic's rating. Flashdance relied almost completely on its untested star, Beals, because the story ends up feeling more like an excuse to watch Beals and to watch a series of what could really be called music-videos-within-a-movie. Both Beals, and the notion of a "music video" were new things in 1983. There's some good stuff from supporting actors and the cinematography is truly excellent. The dance routines are photographed and staged with a lot of imagination. Another bonus is Lee Ving of Fear is there in a small but fun role. And of course there's the _songs.​_

The movie isnt deep or intellectual but it caught the spirit of the times in 1983, not just in the USA but in the UK as well and other countries. The music from the movie was massive here in England.

She has done a lot of indie films and my favorite role of her's was as "Bette Porter" on The L Word. Now, she is the lead star on the new FOX show, "The Chicago Code." She is also a brilliant photographer. About a year ago, JB released a book of photographs from her 6 years time working on "The L Word." She is so talented.

I remember learning some years after the movie came out that Marine Jahan did the dance scenes (as well as exercise workouts, etc), but this is the first time I'm hearing that there were 4-5 dancers altogether. All uncredited, I guess, which seems unprofessional if not illegal. I wonder why it was done that way - would it have taken away some of the magic? Nevertheless, Flashdance did cast a magic spell over '80s teenagers. Jennifer Beals' fresh beauty, innocent and sultry at the same time, the dancing, the amazing soundtrack, the fairytale plot (somewhat improbable, but still romantic in its own way)... not to mention the fashion which took over for the years following - off the shoulder sweatshirts and leg warmers, anyone? 😊 Epic movie. ❤

I do not know about the beginning, but the finale dance sequence was done by a French dancer, except the break dancing part. That was done by a break dancer, a male, who was later featured in Beat Street in 1985. I believe he was in the Rock Steady Crew from New York City. You can tell because the angle of the camera and the lighting changes as we see the beginning of the break dancing sequence.

Interesting! this video might be the only one in youtube that features an interview of flashdance including Jennifer Beals. This doesn't even happen on the DVD. I mean, JB is not in it, which is so sad. She doesn't seem to like to talk about the movie that much, and in my opinion Flashdance is the movie where she shines the most, and that I most love seeing her do. I don't care if she's not a dancer. SHe should make a Flashdance sequel. She can do it and still look good in it!

No question the dancing and dancers were the stars but unfortunately non of those dancers were actors and to tell the story you need an actress to do it. Jennifer Beals is a brilliant woman a Yale graduate. I remember when the movie became a hit they had the real dancers interviewed on several shows.
