in the Antarctic treaty signed in the 1950s by The USA, The Soviet Union, France , UK , Japan , Australia, Norway the continent of Antarctica was divided among the 5 countries . Australia has the lion share of the treaty with 40% of Antarctica territory (6 mln km2) . It is stated in the agreement that no one can dispute the claim and can have new claims in Antarctica after the treaty. Australia with Antractic territory is 13.5 second largest country in the world surpassing Canada (9.9 mln km2) and The USA (9.8 mln km2).

TTK has done it again - so good! Just a perspective but if we consider one of your questions at the end, the one about rights of possession specifically, the powers that be over the centuries have never really given a damn about who says what or why, when something becomes considered as a resource and therefore an issue of concern. In most cases all that matters is land, money and greed. Subsequently, if that sort of thing, which is a future possibility regarding Antarctica, leads to war to increase ones position and strength, then so be it. It matters not whether the land is unpopulated or populated or what serves the best interests of the planet. Ask any indigenous population. I'm sure the Australian aborigine, the native American Indians or the multitudes of tribes of Africa would speak in unison on the matter. Another example more in line with your exposé, might be the recent desire of America to return to the moon to build and set up on the natural satellite. Would they then claim that as their territory? Would China, Russia or other countries that are space flight capable also want a piece of the moon? One can only hope that common sense wins out regarding Antarctica. With seventy percent of fresh water sitting there in solid form when entire regions and countries are drying up, Antarctica is one of earth's greatest natural resources while being one that should be left alone. Unfortunately in its case, man has not needed to touch it or do anything to it, to have already become a risk to its future. Climate change has already begun its severe bleeding, which man can accept the majority of the blame for. So many possible outcomes based on humanities forward movement through history and while ALL governments pretend to care about all issues regarding the global population, if push comes to shove, they soon avert their moral gaze in favour of status, local economics and the high end of town. Perhaps I've chosen a bleak and negative perspective but with little faith in modern day politics, my doubts about the future of the southern treasure are larger than my hopes for it to flourish as it has for so long. Thank you for another great turn of my mind.
@Windbend3r2 жыл бұрын
Your talking about common sense yet you think the United States put humans on the moon….. Please do some research on the subject because we 100% didn’t go to the moon. The correct answer to this question was set down in writting in the late fifties by all countries of the world NOBODY OWNS THIS AREA OF THE WORLD this is despite the fact that America likes to wave the big stick and make all the rules, i.e. nobody is allowed to fly directly over the south pole, nobody can go near certain areas of the place, and a whole lot more. In fact you can go to jail for doing so. The bit that gets me is when is the rest of the world going to give the U.S. the two fingers, the world does not belong to the U.S. as China is trying to show them, after all the waters that America is sending its warships to is called THE SOUTH CHINA SEA not tge America south sea.
