What kind of tubs did you guys get to do this? I keep screwing up my large scale dipping attempts because I’m using a bucket and struggling to keep it to temp etc Have killed some stuff this way

We use rubbermaid polycarbonate food containers for the restaurant industry. If we are doing big dipping sessions we change out the water often and run small heaters and powerheads.

Do you think you could give me your opinion on using hydrogen peroxide for green hair algae control? How much is too much, is it considered effective and safe to use?

Hydrogen peroxide is very effective at killing algae but it is very aggressive on corals. I would only use it with corals I know can tolerate it like Zoas.

The primary active ingredient is imidacloprid. It’s an effective and widely used systemic, neonicotinoid pesticide for control of ants, termites, fleas, roaches and various other insects. It’s one of, if not the most, widely used insecticide in agriculture. It’s considered “safer” for humans than other classes of insecticides but certainly isn’t safe. As the neonicotinoid name suggests, it essentially mimics nicotine and it kills by disrupting the nervous system in insects. It’s a legit, pro-level insecticide being sold over the counter in a less concentrated mix. If you hire an exterminator or pest control service, there’s a good chance they’re using this insecticide in some form. It’s been banned by the EU due to its potential link to the decline of bees and other pollinators, as have other neonicotinoids and pyrethroids. I had no idea it was used as a dip. I use it for lawn and perimeter outdoor pest control under the Dominion 2L brand. I don’t use it indoors but some do. I don’t consider it safe around pets or children. You can find it and the full label and safety sheet on the Do My Own Pest Control website or similar sites and make your own decisions based on the literature on that class of insecticide. But seeing as it’s highly toxic to invertebrates and fish, why would anyone want to risk exposing their aquarium to that? It’s also slow to degrade in water and these products have water runoff warnings. The 2nd active ingredient is beta-cyfluthrin, a pyrethroid insecticide. Permethrin is a an example of that class and is used in some insect repellants and mosquito foggers. They’re generally considered safe for humans but also toxic to fish and invertebrates.

Iirc it’s a member of a family of neurotoxins called neonicotinoids. This one in particular has links to various cancers in humans, neurological damage, tremors, memory loss. It has strong links to congenital brain and heart defects in infants. It’s main risk in agriculture is that it doesn’t break down over time in the environment in which it is used. So farm workers, groundskeepers can face increased risks of various cancers. I personally would not expose myself to it, let alone my children or even my pets. If you do choose to use it I’d recommend using it outside, with full PPE- goggles/ respirator/gloves. Disposable bowls from the dollar store etc. there is a strong consensus that there are risks using the product. The exact risks are not well known. Since it doesn’t break down easily, it’s likely to take years or decades for the damage to become visible.

Than, I have a Ultra Maxi-Mini that fail to stick to anything. It seems the foot has loss the ability to stick and it keep floating around the sand bed while the one next to it stick just fine. Do you recommend any solution or dipping? The anemone looks healthy and is eating just fine. Just won't stick to anything.

i don’t even own any clams but yet i’m aware that clams shouldn’t be dipped. they’re big time filter feeders. so any element or chemical it may be exposed to can be the reason for its death

As an avid gardener I was so shocked to learn people recommend using bayer to dip corals! That stuff is so SO toxic! And then you do what with it afterwards - pour it down the drain!?! Terrible. Used solution should be bottled up and taken to the specialized Household hazardous waste disposal. Huge hassle.
