FIRST IMPRESSIONS of SANTIAGO CHILE | PLAZA de ARMAS & MERCADO CENTRAL
Our first few days in Chile were spent in the capital city of Santiago and we did a lot of walking! The city is big and there are a lot of places to see (best viewpoints coming in the next video) in this video we start off in the main square, Plaza de Armas, which was beautiful but very busy and after a visit to the tourist information centre we were being extra cautious filming in the square as they warned us of individuals that simply snatch things straight out of your hands, we also did see a few shady looking characters that put us on edge so we enjoyed our time briefly and decided to do more filming in other parts of the city.
We made our way over to Plaza De La Constitution, which is a lovely quiet square that is surrounded by government buildings including La Moneda Palace. It was much quieter and felt safer as the area has armed guards everywhere, much easier to get the camera out and also do a little reading about the history from the boards in the square while admiring the architecture.
In this video we also braved the famous Mercado Central which is a top tourist sight and can be a great place to eat local food especially if you love seafood, which we don’t (one of us is vegetarian) but we didn’t want to miss out on all the fuss so we decided to go earlier one morning before it got too busy. The building is pretty cool and the people were friendly, but yes it smells of fish :)
We finish this video over at Bicentennial Park which was created to celebrate Chiles bicentennial. It was a welcome place to find in the middle of this sprawling megapolis as it runs along a river and has a dog park and play/workout areas and is just a great place to escape the hectic city whilst looking back at it’s huge skyline in the distance.

A British couple from just outside London, England. We got married in 2018 and decided instead of a honeymoon we’d travel the world together. We saved money and travel points, quit our jobs, rented our house out and boarded a one way flight in 2020. We started this KZbin channel to share our experiences with friends, family and anyone who plans to travel to the places we’re visiting. We leave TKT tips/facts in our vlogs and blogs to give information that we wish we’d had before visiting. We hope you find our content fun & useful :)

Very glad you came to visit Chile, I just want to clarify that the streets vendors phenomena is kind of new for Chile, it all boomed with the migration from Caribean and other south american countries. (There is always been streets vendors in Chile, but nothing in comparision with what is happening now). For us Chileans, plaza de armas and it surroundigs are a total mess. Sorry for the boring comment. I really enjoy your videos.

Thanks for this. i was born in Santiago and lived there 39 years. Then I moved to the US 11 years ago but I always check youtube for videos like this, that show me how the city is and looks like currently.

I need more vacation time so I can go on a trip further away like this. The markets seemed nice, but crazy to hear about the pricing there. A great overview and intro to Chile!

1:06 I once took that bus ride, from Santiago to Mendoza, during winter, and didn't feel scared at all.

It is a beautiful bus journey but definitely depends on your driver, we had a fairly fast one but still loved the scenery just not the sharp cliff edge turns 😅

That bus journey was intense especially being on the top level with the window seat! 🫣 I had no idea when I got on the bus that it would be quite like that, Craig did and he loved it 😂 Yeh those markets are so famous so we felt like we should visit, it was an experience for sure 😅

Yes, you’re right. The scenery was beautiful which was another reason we took so many buses around but the journey into Chile from Mendoza was a particularly crazy (but also beautiful) route. Still much more affordable than flying!

The market has very old architecture like from the Tartarian empire...Which is extremely interesting that still exists.

Los mercados son lugares muy interesantes para visitar. He visitado muchas 'plazas de mercado' en Colombia y en México, y muestran algo más auténtico que los lugares "turísticos" comunes.
