We live in our HOMES...not in MUSEUMS. You have 3 children you homeschool, cook from scratch meals for 5 people, raise a lovely little garden, take care of a big house! You are absolutely amazing. Your home, full of warmth, love. A real home. Blessings, dear young woman.

Going to bed to rest is self care and that comes before having a clean and tidy kitchen. By getting rest you are going to be the best Mother you can be, instead of being overly tired and grumpy. Great job making good choices. 😊

I love this comment! I know I can't 100% count on having the energy to do an evening reset so my daily habit is to do what I can after dinner but not push it because I have a rock solid habit of catching up on dishes and resetting the kitchen after breakfast each day.

@@jennyjenkins877 when my children were small I always stacked the dishes by the sink (no dishwasher) after dinner, we ate as a family. Then it was bath, books and bed. Not just for the children. Then I got up early filled the sink with hot water, soaked the dishes while I enjoyed a coffee. Then tidied up, it was my way to start the day. I had friends horrified by this but I needed my sleep and the start before the family was awake!

Missing you friend! I pray all is well🩷🙏🏼🩷. I see there are a lot of people in these comments encouraging you to not let haters bother you, I am so sorry about that, I had no idea. I’m thinking that might be why we haven’t seen you in so long 😢. Truly you are a bright sunshine part of my day, a place I can feel like someone actually gets me as a wife, mother, and woman, and especially a homeschooling mamma, we are a unique breed and we need each other to pray for one another and to support each other on this journey. Be assured of my prayers for you and your family no matter if you are on KZbin or not. Be well and may God bless you abundantly! 🩷🙏🏼🩷

You are one of my favorite minimalist KZbinrs! Maybe my favorite. You are real, honest and authentic. I’ve woken up many times to a kitchen like that! Being w your family is the best and most important thing to do. They know you typically clean it up, so it’s not like they aren’t learning. I’m glad you share even the times you feel you’ve “failed”. It means you are human and means you’re very successful in another area at the moment a. K. A. Loving your family and yourself!

You are so right about not losing yourself and what makes you happy. I did. I love your talk it through process. I know you’ll default to acceptance instead of shame as you keep working through the years. You guys have had such a tough time in recent years. Every day you wake up and start over, whether it’s cleaning or decluttering or planting or hanging with the fam is a gift and a miracle and a joy. Love that you always work to reframe. Say it with us: There’s No Shame, only Progress and Appreciation for Me!!❤️🤗 (I know acknowledging the thought and releasing it is effective. Another practice is to switch your word to guilt or a less charged word. Make up a word that makes you laugh and get ride of the self-imposed word shame from your vocab. Only give yourself compassion for your new normal and wake up to a brand new day to get things done. ☀️

My mom wasn't the best housekeeper. Growing up, I know the house often cluttered and messy but we kids felt loved, safe, and home. Your kids may remember some of the messes or clutter (and I mean general life clutter -not borderline hoarding) but they will value the love and coziness.

I don't comment often, but I just want to say you should never feel shame or regret. You have accomplished so much these last few years you should be proud! Failure, to me, means giving up completely and you have not done that. In the end, time with family and loved ones will count much more than whether the kitchen counter is clean. Every comment is helpful to your channel (even the mean ones). But please try to ignore the ones that are judge-y or hateful (Every channel has mean comments). FYI- I'm not a minimalist by any means, but I enjoy your videos. Blessings to you and your lovely family ❤️

It's so easy for the kitchen to get away from you. I ran the dish washer, but hadn't unloaded it. Then had breakfast and lunch, so all of a sudden the sink was full of dishes, a pot, collander, Tupperware, etc. It happened so fast from clean to a mess.

This was my situation the other day and I was aggravated and frustrated too. Once I spent some time picking up and cleaning, it looked better. Why do we do this to ourselves? I think in fairness to you, you are a minimalist living with 4 other people who may NOT be minimalists… so cut yourself some grace Erica until your whole family is on board with you. YOU have undoubtedly come a LONG way!!! I agree that the benefits of minimalism includes decluttering things to let experiences in as you free up time that was previously devoted to taking care of things. You are also a lifelong learner, and teaching your children about that too. Hang in there! I just got my certificate in Floral Design in my 60’s. It is never too late to learn.

Sue Wolfe- I grew up in a home that slowly became a collector's home. As a child, it was neat and tidy. Then, as my parents collected things, it became messy and I couldn't have anyone over. By the time I was in elementary school, I had basically no one to my home to play; no sleepovers, etc. because I was embarrassed. As I look it now, it probably was boredom on my father's part, as he was forced to retire young for health reasons. My mother was clinically depressed, but I didn't know that as a child. What I'm saying is, that as parents, we have a profound effect on our children and their mental health. I don't feel comfortable in a messy place, it makes me feel uncared for. That's just my experience. I do have places where things are out of place, but for the most part, I like it neat, but that's just me. Thank you for being open and vulnerable with us Erica. I know it's a difficult thing to do! 👏👍😉❤️❤️

This is so wonderful of you to share. Erica's goal with this channel is to help others who are dealing with the same struggles so I'm sure it's all worth it (even dealing with negativity) when the video touches people like us and provides some encouragement to do the thing. If doing the task is fine for you in comparison to just starting it, you might have the same Executive Functioning issue as me with *task initiation*. You're not "pathetic" if your brain lacks this skill. I used to call myself "lazy" until I found out I had this deficit, along with *time management* issues, which caused me to avoid tasks because I thought they'd take forever when, in reality, they might only take a few minutes. One way to hack your brain into getting started is to set a timer and just go for it. What helped me was habit stacking (from the book "Atomic Habits" by James Clear). I paired the task of catching up on dishes after I was done eating breakfast and already standing to take the dishes to the sink. Then, I make myself a nice caffeinated beverage as a reward!

Erica, you have three children that are still fairly young and who demand a lot of your time. So why would you beat yourself up just because occasionally things don’t always get done the way you would like? The reality is that our homes are always going to get messy like this at points, if they didn’t, then we would all be moving towards perfection, and we all know there is no such thing as ‘true’ perfection, only our own internalised idea of what we aspire towards, right?! So just give yourself grace and love. You did a great job clearing up the mess and because you have practiced minimalism for a few years now, it took less than an hour to sort out, so good on you, Erica! Don’t let the inner critic, internalised anxiety and discomfort take control. Regards, me time as an adult, children past a certain age need to see their parents being independent of them, because like you say it teaches them a ‘can do’ attitude and an idea of what value having an ‘independent spirit’ can look like. Plus it reassures your kids that you can separate for periods of time from them and that they will be OK. It also makes them understand subconsciously that as a parent you won’t over step their boundaries and become pushy or start to live vicariously through them. A child seeing parents finding joy in doing things autonomously, and not just as part of the family group, underlines that the parent has their own values, wants, desires and needs. Plus, it demonstrates all kinds of things which your children can mirror and learn from as they get older, including: Individual endeavour, thoughtfulness for themselves and other from a different group, self care, creativity passion, determination, an adventurous heart etc.

I am older with no children at home so I have now started diamond painting and working on puzzles and coloring and I am thinking about doing what they call a glue book or junk journal, oh yes, I also do counted cross stitch and I love reading books. I have so many different crafts that I wonder what I will do today! So, I think it is great you are finding time to get interested in something for yourself. Your children are young but the time will fly by and you will be glad you developed interest in things for yourself for the day when they leave home. Did I mention I LOVE watching you tube videos!!! That really takes up a lot of time and I learn so much about decluttering and watching ladies like yourself cleaning and enjoying life!

We are so hard on ourselves. We have to practice to not be that way. We can have a simple and minimized home, we can have routines and habits. But sometimes things happen and we are more busy, or more tired, or something in our day with schedule, activities, children, work etc changes and that affects our home and surrounding. But that's life, and that's ok. We just take some time another day and try and reset. But the reset isn't the goal. The goal is for the space to function so that we can keep using the space and living our lives. Much love to you for being so real here on KZbin!

We have a small 3-tier trolley in the kitchen that we use to collect dirty dishes while cooking and after meals. That keeps counters and sink clear, until we are ready to fill the dishwasher. It visually simplifies the kitchen chaos and takes the urgency out of doing dishes. Our kitchen is almost never perfect, and there is probably no need for it, either.

I feel like success isn't having to tidy every night, it's doing it more nights than not doing it. Yes, life is messy. That's why we clean and give ourselves grace. 😀

I also am a homeschooling mom, I have 3 boys and have a toddler girl, sometimes it can be busy and messy despite the fact we are a minimal family. I always let my children have free access to arts and crafts materials.😅 I try to have them tidy up the living room and I take care of the kitchen before bed. Sometimes when it feels overwhelming and im tired I try to think of it in terms of "future me will be thankful that past me didn't leave it for myself" several years ago my husband said " that's tomorrow me's problem" and I thought I never want to leave a problem for my future self if I am capable to completing it now. I also try to remind myself while I'm washing the dishes for the 5th time of the day and cleaning up art strewn across the living room that it will be gone too soon and I will terribly miss these busy messy nights, sometimes that's enough to give me motivation when I feel I'm too tired to finish.

As a home schooling momma, I remember this stage. The house was pretty much always a mess. I told my husband, "you can either have a beautifully kept home OR you can have well-educated children, but you can't have both." It got better as they got older.

Erica you would definitely feel relaxed at my house😂 Always little piles everywhere. But even though we are empty nesters, I feel shame because my health recently hasn't allowed me to do the tasks I always have accomplished❤

So happy to have found this video! I thought the algorithm was messing with me so I searched for you. I love what you do. We are social animals so it is hard to ignore criticism. There has to be a hierarchy though, I think. The opinions of trusted people who truly know us - our close friends and family - should and do matter. But the comments of random strangers on the internet? Maybe not so much.

People in general feel empowered to be jerks these days. Don't let them get you down. A perfect home is staged for life. An imperfect home is experiencing life.
