This is amazing. Ive been thinking about getting hemostats and now this seals it.. Would you mind to give me a bit of help on what I should get first? How many curved and how many straight? If I wanted to make lets say mandala right away too ... Thanks so much for your beautiful work and talent!

Thank you! To make a sunflower you need 4 curved hemostats. To make a mandala it depends on the design and how large you would like the mandala to be. You can use as few as 6 or 7 or as many as 20+. You can also mix curved and straight hemostats. I prefer 10 and 12 inch hemostats that are sturdy and have a larger teeth area. I have some smaller ones and I use them too, but not as often as my 10 and 12 inch ones. These are the kind of curved ones that I like: amzn.to/3wbKAMH

Question about the Panda spin dryer, please. I just looked at it, and wow, it's just what I've been wishing for! I thought it was like a salad spinner and couldn't see how it would help. Do you just put the shirts in wet from the soda ash or do you squeeze/ wring out as much as you can beforehand?

I absolutely love my Panda spin dryer! I very slightly wring the shirts out as I am putting them in the spin dryer - just so that they don't drip all over between my soda ash bucket and the spin dryer. You don't have to though. This spin dryer has a powerful motor and will wring out multiple hoodies that are full of soda ash without any problems at all. I wring out multiple shirts all at one time and I usually stop the spin dryer before the cycle is completed so that they aren't too dry to tie. One of the best things is that there is a spout on the front where the liquid that is being spun (the soda ash in this case) out gets drained off. I put a small pitcher that I got from the Dollar store (I actually have a couple and I trade them out as they get full) under the spout and I pour the soda ash solution right back into my bucket to use again. It really makes my soda ash solution go a lot further. I usually use mine outside and then I rinse it out really well and wipe it down after I use it and bring it back into the house. It is very powerful and it is amazing for hoodies and sweatshirts. About a month ago I soaked a single shirt and so I thought I would just wring it out by hand instead of pulling out my spin dryer. I've gotten so used to how well the spin dryer works that I was shocked how much soda ash solution remains in the shirt with just hand wringing items. If you tie dye a lot, I don't think you will be disappointed. It truly is one of my "must have" tie dye items after having one for awhile.

Hi! On this fold, the sunflower portion is a pretty thick fold and so I always dye it dry. If the inside of the fold is too damp, it won't soak up the dye properly and the center of the sunflower and even the petals won't be fully dyed - they can have white streaks in the middle. Occasionally a shirt will repel the dye when it is dry - if that happens, lightly spray a little bit of your soda ash solution on top and it should allow the dye to soak in properly.

Hi! I purchase heat shrink tubing from the electrical area in Home Depot. I place a piece of tubing on each side of the hemostat and use my heat gun to shrink it to fit. If there is any excess at the end of the hemostat - I trim it with a pair of scissors.

@@andreaberry8087 Thank you so much! I use curved hemostats, and I have covered the teeth portion with heat shrink tubing. I purchase my hemostats from either Amazon or ebay. There are a lot of hemostats available, but my favorite ones are the ones that are sturdy and have a longer teeth area. Here is a link to some 8 inch ones from Amazon: amzn.to/2QowKnk This link is for a straight and a curved one. On a sunflower shirt I only used the curved ones (usually an 8 inch size for the first row of petals and 10 inch for the second row), but I make mandala shirts using hemostats and I use both straight and curved. I use my 8 inch hemostats a lot, but I also have larger 10 and 12 inch ones that I use quite a bit too. Here is a link to some larger ones: amzn.to/3wbKAMH I have some smaller than 8 inches and I don't think I've ever used them. The heat shrink tubing I usually purchase at my local Home Depot. It is in the electrical section and comes in a variety of sizes (which will fit the different sizes of hemostats). I place the tubing over each side of the hemostats and use a heat gun to shrink it down. I trim any additional tubing that may be left hanging off the end of the hemostat using a pair of scissors. Adding the tubing helps keep the hemostat teeth from ripping a hole in the shirt.

It comes from adding liquid dye onto a dry scrunched shirt. the key is to add enough to saturate the shirt, but don't oversaturate.

I rinse starting in cold to rinse out the soda ash and then I warm it to hot to rinse out the excess dye.

Can I use rubber bands instead of thread?

You can try, but for the center of the sunflower it is really tough to get the white lines in the center without using sinew. The sinew is wax coated and so it won't allow the dye under that area. If you tighten the rubber bands you might be able to get the lines though.
