Hi Angie, I love your videos! This video said “the shirt is dry”. I have always done shirts while damp. Is there a reason the shirt should be dry?

Hi Susan! No, this shirt didn't need to be dry. I usually tie a bunch of shirts at one time and by the time I got around to dyeing this one, it had dried out. I do like to dye thicker folds like mandalas and geodes though when they are dry. I usually get better color saturation in the middle of them. Angie I have 2 questions, what is the significance of turning the shirt inside out? Also if you simple fold the shirt in half aren’t the middle of the back and middle of the front already together? Not criticizing just curious I have made a lot of Tye Dye and like to keep it simple. I’ll try this both ways see if I notice anything difference.

I turn the shirt inside out to avoid speckling from undissolved dye. If the speckles are small they will stay on the inside of the shirt and not show. When the shirt is folded in half without centering it, the shirt will be layered like: front, back, back, front. So, there are two layers of fabric (both of the back sides) between the front sides of the shirt, and both of the front sides of the shirt will be on the outside. If you are doing a design where you are applying the dye to the front and back the same way - you probably won't notice a difference. However, if you are doing a design where you are applying different colors to the front of the tied shirt and the back of the tied shirt, you will sometimes see the difference on the front of the shirt. The sides wouldn't look as symmetrical.

Thank you! You can isolate the front of the shirt and only fold and tie the heart onto the front of the shirt. The shirt will have a bit of a different shape on the back though. This is fantastic! When you say "front or back" when you're dying, you are referring to the side of the whole item you're dying once it's tied, not the front or back of the shirt specifically is that correct? Thanks

Thank you! That's a really good question - I refer to the side where I begin applying the dye as the front side. So on folds like this one it isn't actually the front side of the shirt.

@@paulwatson Yes, you definitely could do that. You would isolate the front of the shirt and draw the heart on only the front center of the shirt. I have several videos where I placed hearts only on the front of the shirt. When applying color or the black, how do you know what side to do the black on?

It actually doesn't matter. The colored dye will show through to both sides of the shirt and so will the black.

When you let them set for hrs do you wrap them in plastic ? .. also do you let your shirt completely dry before you put the dye on ?

I don't wrap them in plastic. I have some long plastic under the bed containers like the ones that I apply dye over, and I place them on a rack down inside of that container and put the lid on. The rack will allow the excess dye to drain away from the shirts and they won't dry out with the lid on the container. Since the lid is also white - I can put the tubs outside in the heat without the sun shining directly on the shirts. I have an Amazon link in the description for this video for the kind of container and racks I use. I do usually allow my shirts to dry out completely before I apply the dye. For a design like this one it isn't necessary, but for a thicker design like a mandala or a geode I get better color saturation when it is dry. If it is too wet inside the middle of a geode or mandala, it's tough to get the already saturated fibers to accept the dye. If you've ever seen a mandala with large white streaks in the middle, that is sometimes the cause. The dry shirt wicks the dye into the middle really well. Once I see the dye come through to the back side I know that the inside must already be well saturated. Most of the time I tie a bunch of shirts at one time and then dye them the over the next few days/weeks. Therefore, even shirts that don't need to be dry usually are dry by the time I go to apply dye to them. I normally don't have issues with the dye beading up and not soaking in to a dry shirt, but it does happen occasionally. If I ever have that problem, I will lightly mist a little bit of soda ash solution that I keep in a spray bottle over the shirt and that will usually help the dye to soak in.

You can, but the front and back won't look as symmetrical. I'll attach a link to a heart where I just folded it in half. When I folded that one, I didn't intend to add the black and so I didn't center the shirt. As you can tell in the final shirt, the side where I added the black has a bit larger black lines than the other side. I used Black Bang on this shirt, but right now the owner of Custom Colours doesn't have his store open. Raven from Dharma Trading Company is also one of my favorite blacks to use. I think one of the secrets to getting a super dark black is mixing it right before using it (in my experience black is a color that starts to go bad and not be as dark as the dye gets older) and making sure to mix it using enough dye. Black isn't a color I ever skimp on. I usually use 8 teaspoons of dye into 1 cup of water.
