Tie-off! Tying the classic Black Gnat dry fly

Tim and Tom square off with a classic dry fly that is about 100 years old but still a favorite pattern in some areas. You don't see many quill-wing hackled dry flies these days, but they still catch trout. This is a special favorite for brook trout and grayling but it's also a killer on panfish. We're sure Tom and Tim will have different approaches to tying the pattern, and it's always interesting to see how two different tiers use vastly different ways of tying the exact same pattern. And you'll get to vote live at the end on which version you like better!

Well, I've been on a No Hackle kick all winter. Mike Lawson is a master at it and he says tie and fish the fly, it takes effort. Mine are not things of beauty but the Henderickson that I tied do work and I caught fish with them. I want to master the fly for no other reason than well why not, heck I am teaching myself Russian, and its not an easy thing either. As fly fishermen and Fly tyers far to often we take the easy route, I am no exception to that. Does it matter no it don't other than a personal accomplishment of doing something out of my comfort zone.

Black Gnatt!!!! Got me so excited. I was learning as a kid with black and white Batam tying kit manual. This was one of my first things I tried to tie! Took me forever and one fish ruined all my work. Never tied another one again. Figure this is going to be hilarious with the wing failures. How did Flager win this? The technical issues were stealing the win from. TOM.

Tough one. I like Tom's fly much better except for the one wing. I like Tim's wings better but not the rest. I suppose I'd vote for Tom's fly.

Look Soft head works the best on these wings. Put it on the inside of each wing AFTER you put them on the shank. yee yee. Thanks to Cheech for this idea.

I started out trying to tie classic Catskill slip wings...thank goodness, these really aren't the best for fishing!! All of the dries that I tie for myself are parachutes with synthetic material for the post. ❤
