Tier List: 3DS/WiiU Online Shutdown

We knew this was coming, and I tried to use the last few days to record whatever online footage I could. And to make sure I used the footage and experience for content, here's a tier list of the online games for the 3DS and WiiU that I have, and how much it hurt to lose them. Enjoy. :)

I was on wiiu and when it shut down, pretendo made a thing that if your console wasnt of during the shutdown, you could still play online! plz pin🙂

for kid Icarus uprising, that one hurts for me. And I was in the online servers before the shutdown happened. Once the shutdown happened, it kicked everyone out. also, I counted the panels and as long as you don't use two feathers on Palutena and one on Viridi's board, you will be fine.

I was on Mario Kart 7 when the servers shutdown, and everyone but 2 bots got kicked off at 8:02 PM EDT (basically the moment they turned them off.)

Kid Icarus uprising didn't work before the shut down. I was on the servers a hour before it closed and I could not connect with anyone.

The nice thing about Generations 3DS's online was the profile card system where people could show off their favorite Sonic games and characters, how long they've been a fan, and their rankings on the main stages

Eh, who knows. Maybe Sonic X Shadow Generations will introduce a similar feature. I doubt it, but one can hope.

I actually own 2 copies of gens 3ds, while you can do versus mode I’ve noticed a slight drop in frame-rate. I personally recommend using a cheat device to unlock everything including some missions since there’s a strange bug that locks a few of the missions.

The one that I played when the servers went down, and whose loss hurt the most for me, was definitely the Nintendo Badge Arcade. I had so many badges, and they lived and died with the server. They didn't do the sensible thing and make a version where we could switch out our badges offline, so they're gone for good now. Even if the folks at Pretendo remake the Badge Arcade, we won't have our collections, and they might not even make the original badges available (something something copyright). We truly lost a lot with that one 😢

In hindsight, I wish I tried out some of the online modes before the servers went offline. Especially for Kid Icarus, as I haven't played the game in years. At the same time, though, I have long since moved past using my 3DS for multiplayer, so it may have ended up being a neat novelty at most. Glad to see you recorded your final moments with these systems online mode, as well as your thoughts on how much they will be missed. It's almost a shame how quickly some of these games were forgotten.

Really crazy to see the Wi-fi for these systems shut down. I was already online and active by the time many of these games were being developed/promoted, so seeing their lives end was a really crazy experience (remember when all we had of Smash Wii U/3DS was a drawing of the characters on a whiteboard?) I spend my final hours in XY. In addition to all the cool features it offered, the PSS in that game also had an exploit that allowed you to communicate with other players, (for better or for worse) so that game basically served as a Pokémon-themed version of Discord for many years. I wanted to see how things held up over all these years, and aside from the overly hacked GTS, it was almost as if nothing changed. People on there were still plentiful, and the team setups were very similar to the ones I saw in 2014.

When playing MK8 again, I was surprised by how good the online was. Like you said, no lag whatsoever, 'specially compared to MK8DX. I wish the Switch's internet was better, but it's just what we got for now. Great ranking list as will.

While there are still plenty of reasons to play Fire Emblem Fates, I will miss the freedom with the My Castle Feature. I’ll still have my StreetPass tags and it can still work if I find other people with copies, but it’ll be a lot more restrictive now.

As soon as the online shutdown was announced, I had a timer to play Monster Hunter 3U and Monster Hunter 4U. There might be other games, and some monsters are in those games. Both games still bring unique qualities or features. The main thing is that both games have monsters exclusive to them, usually present at the end of the game. Something else true for both games is that grinding for better gear is needed, and it’s insane if you do it on your own. 3U: Underwater combat and with it an alternate way to fight Lagiacrus, Royal Ludroth, and Plesioth. Those monsters might be present in other games, but their underwater abilities mean this game has the best version of their fight. Plus Gobul, Abyssal Lagiacrus, Dire Miralis, Ceadeus and Goldbeard Ceadeus cannot exist without the underwater portion. I managed to solo most of the roster. The only one I can’t do is Jhen Mohran’s subspecies, even when I was at full endgame gear. Plus Abyssal Lagiacrus is at the end of an INSANE hunter rank grind. This game loses the most out of the two. 4U: Most of this game’s blood is in GU, which is on Switch. Though there are still amazing monsters that the average player will never experience. In particular, Gogmazios is a very hard solo fight for when you unlock him. Also White/Old Fatalis is no longer accessible since he was only unlocked by an event quest. For those with the quest? I have no idea if the quest before WF is possible alone due to the 15 minute timer. For reference, the second lowest time limit is 35 minutes for a quest.

I did a bit of Splatoon, Mario Maker, and Smash 4, and it was a lotta fun. Godspeed Wii U and 3DS online, you weren't the best, but you were still darn good.

Even I got a little disappointed in the fact that 3DS and WiiU Services completely decided to shut down. No worries though, I'm sure we've got plenty of WiiU experiences on the Switch like Mario 3D World and MK8D. Also, I'm sure there might be collections of some more old titles especially for the WiiU. Probably we might get a Splatoon trilogy collection for the Switch.

I played Pokémon Alpha Sapphire religiously and one feature that I'm going to miss is the GTS (to an extend) and the ability to connect to the internet in order to update the Secret Bases, now I'm stuck with the same Secret Bases forever 🙃 The last Pokémon I got from the GTS was a Shiny Giratina (they were asking for a Scizor), it's hacked but I'll keep it as a living memory.

No more online for 3DS Pokémon games hit me where it hurts because at least the 3DS Pokémon games didn’t entirely remove Pokémon. It’s not the end of the world for me though, once I mod my 2DS and download PKSM (I already have PKHex downloaded), I will be able to get any Pokémon I want

It's not technically online but it sucks trying to find anyone that will willingly have a 3DS/2DS for Streetpass, not counting set-up events for them. I think the game that probably got hit the worst for Streetpass-related content is Tomodachi Life, as certain parts like sending your miis' kids around the world is hard to do. Also theres the Spotpass clothing for it that you can only get all of it if you find a Tomodachi Life player who played it for a long while.

A very good video even if I wasn't able to play online at least with my Wii U because it died on me but at least I was able to beat Xenoblade X before it went to homecoming

The game I last played was Mario kart 7. I was able to go on for like over an hour after the shutdown time which is really cool. I don't know how to capture card so I recorded it over a camera and I plan on uploading that just for fun. I don't know it felt really weird playing until they shut down I felt like I was bidding farewell to a long time friend. I want to see makes me appreciate stuff like pretendo so much more now and honestly I have so much respect for the people that are maintaining that service and keeping these games that mean so much to us alive. Well I had a good time with you officially online 3DS and Wii U goodbye. Onto pretendo now

Really interesting idea for a video I spent the last day wonder trading in all the Gen 6 and Gen 7 games It’s not the same with newer games not their fault just too many hackers giving you generated Pokémon and now with Home it’s not as magical when you get a wonder traded starter since you probably have a lot of Bulbasaurs, I didn’t know how to trade at the time so seeing a Piplup Wonder Traded was insane

Yeah, originally I wanted to give out a bunch of Mews, Celebis, and jirachis that I could clone from Emerald and give them out in Wonder Trades, but I lost track of the date and just went with a Dexoys instead.

Logged into Uprising on the final day to get some final Light vs Dark matches in. Really hoping Nintendo honors Sakurai's wish of getting a remake of that game on modern hardware. Completed every challenge in that game, besides boss battles on hard.

Splatoon 1 is the most screwed without the servers because outside story mode you can't do much and good thing pretendo got these servers working

It's been a couple of years since I played it last, but losing the online for Kid Icarus Uprising still hurts. Here's hoping that if the game does get a re-release on a future system, they find _some_ way to let you import your data from the original version.

I’d say the loss of official online support for MK7 is a bigger blow than MK8 Wii U, since the gliding controls are way better than 8 and the original versions of 7’s nitro courses are better than in the BCP.

This is a good tier list, but you forgot some other games like Legend of Zelda TriForce Hero’s for example. Sure we still have local play, but the main way to play that game was through online and that is no longer possible. RIP 3DS&Wii U online you were amazing!

While I am still playing pokemon on the 3ds and the pokebank is still working. I really missed the wonder trade completing pokedex and pokemon that I struggled to find or get mythicals and shinies heck I still have that traded phionie and a few others cause of it that was before the anniversary of it but not the case. Sad to see it shut down but it was bound to happen

I haven't made a Majora's Mask playthrough. I streamed it on Twitch but I haven't done one here. Now Mega Man on the other hand, sure I've done a few of those.

rayman legends is avaiable on switch still so that's probably still up i spent my final hours in a mario kart 7 community and receiving my last few notes from swapdoodle i'll miss pokemon the most, trade evos and version exclusives are unobtainable now without playing locally or having bank but none of these are really that great methods as for mario kart 7, i'll surely miss having the ability to pick whatever course i wanted instead of a list of 3 rigged randomly selected courses

I mostly played Zelda Tri Force Heros before the shutdown. For those few hours, it wasn't nearly as hard to find a lobby of 3 people and I almost beat the final boss with them! You can technically still play the game with local play or on your own with the doppels, but the game REALLY isn't meant for that and it's just not fun. I really hope Nintendo give multiplayer Zelda another try in the future.

Metroid Prime Federation Force While there were plenty players who were higher than me, I actually helped out some rookies so they could have some fun with this game. Once we actually got a full lobby it was really fun.

At the end of the day, You have pretendo as a last resort or for some games like MK8 and Xenoblade, You can waste 5 dollars and get nintendo switch online if you wanna continue playing these games and reliving your memories But regaurdless, RIP Nintendo Network 2011-2023 (A decade long run)

That's a wireless feature not an online one, I don't think there's a way for them to take that down so you should be fine.

It pales in comparison to the online mode. It's basically 1 v 1 and the game is best played with 8 players online.

As someone who played 16hrs of Star Fox Zero and got all the medals. You might as well ask for a new game. Actually you just should. StarFox Zero exist and plays like 64 because of the motion control gimmicks. You take it away and technically speaking you can play without it but you won't be able to get all of the high score without it because there are enemies that are out of frame. Would it be worth putting it on the switch with a standard control option? I would say no because without the controls we would just have lylat wars AGAIN, again and a lesser one at that. Half of the series is just lylat wars, can we just get a new story? StarFox Zero is a game in poor taste and people would be far more willing to buy if it was a brand NEW game with solid but new gameplay. Bring the branching paths back, add more levels or system maps if you want to. Bring back characters and ideas from the GC and SF2 games as those game have ideas that if implemented well could give us a new refreshing experience.

Ironic it better to Play monster Hunter 3U on the 3DS Then the WiiU sense the 3DS Version Didn't had Online Mutiplayer Just Local Same Monster Hunter 4U Will Also Hurt But Sense It's the 3DS At Least You Can Do Multiplayer Hub with Others Local and for Stoires (Well I Don't Think it hurt Nearly as Bad With Stoires 1 Getting Port to New Consoles and PC)
