10:15 The term Takada(高田) can be translated as "high paddy". The term "paddy" is the place where Asians grow and harvest rice. 21:53 The term Yuraku(有樂) can be translated as "with fun" or "with delight".

As someone who's gone to Japan a lot of times and is a massive train enthusiast, this was great to watch, and it was fun to get pissed off at some of the rankings, great video haha 👍

One cool thing about Nippori is the cemetery there, Yanaka Cemetery. In sakura season it's really pretty, but it has some of the Tokugawas enshrined there. Highly recommend for a peaceful walk.

Enjoyed this video a lot, you got me laughing on the station name's meaning. I love the Yamanote Line lol.

There are several etymological mistakes in this video. Okachimachi actually means "Footmen's Town." Back in the shogun's days, the area featured apartments for o-kachi, lower class samurai who formed the shogun's infantry. Mejiro and Mejguro were named not after the birds, but after Mejiro Fudo and Meguro Fudo ("White-Eyed Fudo" and "Black-Eyed Fudo"), temples dedicated to the Buddha Fudo Myojin. Mejiro Fudo has relocated out of the area, but Meguro Fudo is still a popular temple today. Shinjuku is better translated as "New Post Station," with shuku/juku being a government-sanctioned post station built along highways in the shogun era, although it did indeed feature inns and lodges around the station. And yes, it was "new"--in the early 17th century. Harajuku is similarly better rendered "Field Post Station." While Hamamatsucho literally does mean Beach Pine Town, it is very obviously a reference to the central Japanese city of Hamamatsu.

Nice video btw at 2:20 the keihin tohoku line rapid actually does stop at kanda (it does skips okachimachi and a few others though) (it skips shimbashi as well which is always funny to me as the tokaido and yokosuka lines even stop there lol)

Most of the stations mentioned are being used as backgrounds in some anime or another, so they're all great in my book. This is the main reason I'm miffed that they just tore down the old Harajuku station. It was dingy, sure, but damn, it had charm!

Takadanobaba, has Mikado game center. one of the oldest independently owned ones. IikeBukuro has its newer 2nd location had to and did visit both locations. if you ever want to get lost in a maze then head to Shinjuku station. you will get lost, Guaranteed!

Is there a less gentrified Akihabara offering a similar experience?
@jessejace6 ай бұрын
There are spots in present-day Akiba that still harken back to the way I remember the town, but they're few and far between. I'm not sure if any of Akihabara's equivalents in other Japanese cities have seen the same changes over the years as Akiba has, but I have to assume Akiba saw the worst of it, being the most famous outside Japan.

Loved the video, especially all the jokes! Just one question, isn’t Tsukiji market still open tho? Unsure what you meant by “defunct”.
@jessejace11 ай бұрын
That might be a mistake. When they opened the new market in Toyosu, the plan was to stop using Tsukiji, but I just looked it up and saw that now Tsukiji is called the "outer market."

So - after riding the Nippori Toneri Liner I have to admit that I don’t understand your hatred towards it. It seems like a nice automated line with very similar rolling stock to the Yurikamome Line, just without the views. Then again I’m just some rubber neck tourist who doesn’t know shit. Could you maybe elaborate on your opinion against the NT liner?
@jessejace8 ай бұрын
I didn't say I hated it. I've never ridden it. But I personally have neither any use nor any affection for the Toneri Liner, so it gets made fun of on my video.
@qtm_junky8 ай бұрын
@@jessejace Ahh, well it did add to my enjoyment of your videos so I guess it achieved it's goal haha. Oh and you talked about the Sakura Tram, so I also rode that :P - I guess you've used that at some point too. If you haven't, I highly recommend going to the Minowabashi Station terminal. Extremely picturesque with all the flowers planted near the track.

True Akiba is nothing now. Though not sure I'd blame gentrification. More just the internet- you don't need to trawl little shops for second hand games and electrical bits, you just buy online.
@jessejace10 ай бұрын
That's a good point. I guess at the fore of my perception is that, once city planners saw the tourist potential of the town, it sparked a new interest in correcting Akiba's claustrophobic, fire-hazard nature and cleaning it up for all to see.
