It's likely very intentional on the part of Jenna Marbles to not flaunt her wealth. Of course, it helps that she usually makes actual content that isn't dependant on milking her everyday life.

Kylee Trenton I think she did in as much as she cared less about the fame as it grew and more about making herself happy and having fun. It’s something fairly unique to youtube in general I think, seeing how her success made her into a more genuine person because she isn’t trying to grow a channel anymore. It’s her beautiful plant that she can do whatever she wants with because it doesn’t need careful consideration.

everyone's talking about Jenna Marbles, How is she even entertaining? She uploaded a video with the title "Claire's makeover" and that got 6.5 million views, Tell me why would 6.5 million people want to watch that? What's so entertaining on watching someone who's 33! years old act like a toddler by dressing up like a child in a full on claire's makeover. All the videos about is Jenna Marbles buying a bunch of childish stuff from clarie's and giving herself a makeover with it. Where is the "Relatable" in that? I find it so dump to be honest. Even grown adults on KZbin act like toddlers by the kind of content they still do. It makes them look 3 years old all over again.

honestly now she doesn’t put much of her life with her friends on youtube, she seems more relaxed and like a weight has lifted. when she was with the dolan twins and JC, she almost HAD to be the “newbie to LA” who should be spending all their money and making original videos. but now she hangs out with her friends in private and doesn’t put it all on youtube. she also seems to have got her stuff together now. she has her own apartment and goes to the gym/ has a good diet/ spends fine with her parents/ etc. she also has two days, which sound silly to say, but she’s given herself some responsibility. honestly i think by the fine you become as popular as she is, it’s hard to be the same “relatable” person as you were 3 years ago. she lived in her moms house and then in an apartment with her mom she got stalked and it wasn’t safe for her (she had money and that made her a target for crime and stuff). not here to be sucking up to her i just think that sometimes it’s hard to be the same as you were 3 years ago when she grew up 😊

ughhhh seeing the ace family "working" at the restaurant for "24 hours" made me cringe a whole lot. I currently work part time as a waitress and there was this "celebrity" who used to work for us (bcs the owner REAALLLYYY cares abt fame n publicity) and jesus christ never have I met a person so entitled to themselves before. Basically he intentionally took breaks when the restaurant was busy (the rest of us usually take breaks before or after our shift, but no he just stopped in the middle of the chaotic situation and said "kay im gonna eat lol"), and he told the chef to cook him this dish that takes a longer time to cook, and bcs the chef thought it was for a customer he cooked it only to find out that it was for our dear "celebrity." Not only did he slow down our work during busy hours by interrupting our chef, he literally took his fucking time eating his food until the crowd died down. And what's worse, the owner always sided with him, literally blaming me for not refilling water that was located outside the kitchen that the "celebrity" was conveniently standing next to when my job that night was mostly inside the kitchen prepping dishes. I don't care if you're rich or famous. And acknowledging the fact that other ppl would see u differently is important too. I noticed a pattern with youtubers who have remained “relatable” like Sofia Nygard, Jenna Marbles, Pewdiepie etc. are often people who started their channel’s once they were adults and often already in their early 20’s. It makes me wonder if there is a correlation and if having a few years of adulthood and the struggles that come with it have allowed them to remain a bit more humble and levelheaded. This doesn’t necessarily mean that someone who starts their channel in their 20’s is automatically a better person, they just are more likely to understand the privileges that KZbin stardom have awarded them. But it’s just a thought!

If I suddenly earned a lot of money, I’d definitely buy nicer things, move into a bigger house, etc. I think I’d be a bit hypocritical for calling someone else unrelatable for doing it. I completely agree with you. It is hypocritical, and even then why is it so important for everyone to be relatable in the first place. It is bothersome if they still “act relatable” so I do get that. I don't think that's what it's about... It's not that that's unrelatable, like if you take Jenna Marbles, yeah she lives in a big house, has 3 dogs and buys a lot of useless items to carry out all of her weird videos... but people still enjoy them! It's because the essence of who she is as a person hasn't changed. She's still loud and funny and weird and people click with that because that's who she's always been (imo she's actually even gotten better with time because she's stopped giving a shit about whether or not her videos are going to fit the algorithm/be well received). It's more like if your content has always been relatable and people like you, and then you make a crap ton of money and this completely different lifestyle is suddenly your main goal, but you're still pushing the relatability thing - that's annoying. Not because you can't be proud of what you've got, but because that's all that matters to you anymore and you've lost touch with an audience that was primarily interesting in you because u were "just like them". Then it gets worse when and they can't tell why people are complaining about how entitled they're acting, or make weird "you changed" videos

it’s wild because even watching jenna’s new house video just elicited feelings of pride and happiness for her. maybe because she’s been around and “in my life” for ten years and it’s like watching your hardworking big sis get something she deserves...or maybe because it wasn’t about how big and fancy it is but just the fact that they were proud of getting to own a home for the first time, together. idk but jenna is just so sweet and mindful and self aware and it’s easy to celebrate her successes with her.

@@gnarlyghoul3203 This is the dumbest fucking comment I've ever seen. I love Shane, I've been watching him since 2009. I was there when Bree, Kat, Steve, Shanna and Britt made up his 'squad'. I bought one of his ugly 'Shane is my boyfriend' shirts from Hot Topic when they came out and have bought his movies on iTunes. I also bought a subscription the second his podcast went to Fullscreen. I mention all of this to convey the fact that I love him and support him, but he is not fucking poor. I cannot believe how fucking stupid and cringe-worthy his new wave of fans are. Don't get me wrong, I am so happy he's gaining traction and am ecstatic that he is so popular right now, but holy fucking shit are they all ignorant sheep. Just because he doesn't have the physical currency (he probably does) to show for his fortune doesn't mean he's poor. It's hilarious that someone would even try to defend Shane in regards to the subject. EDIT: Also, he's not fucking poor compared to other KZbinrs. He just makes jokes about that. In contrast to Jeffree he definitely has less money, but that's because he's a tactful businessman, who's miles ahead of your traditional KZbinr. Shane's level of wealth is in no way relatable or can even be considered poor, even at the comparison of other KZbinr's.

I agree but I also think that there is a blatant shallowness and willful ignorance about his purchases (recently saw a documentary on how African immigrants are being exploited in leather tanneries in Italy to produce handbags for all of the luxury brands). He mentions once in his videos that he donates to an LGBT cause but he doesn't seem to educate himself with other causes like the impact his lifestyle has on the environment (cars, flights, junkfood, leather goods etc). When you are that rich you have a responsibility to inform yourself and change the world with your power and influence. You are one of billions who is lucky enough to do so- and I say this from a place of admiration given that he is a self made millionaire.

I agree. By the time a youtuber has become rich and their channel is at 10 million subscribers, you yourself have been a subscriber for that 6 year journey so it isn't easy to unsubscribe. I think youtubers forget that. I think they forget that by the time that youtuber has made it big, it took them 6 years to get there so the same normal people have followed them that entire time and invested time and their emotions into connecting with the youtuber that the subscriber can't just walk away. And during that 6 year journey, because they have maintained being relatable for so long that these channels may not necessarily be picking up other rich young people as new subscribers. The content is changing, but not the viewers.

i'll unsubscribe if someone makes one video i don't like. youtube is parasocial. they're not your actual friends you're not going to hurt their feelings. i like how bo burnham put it when he said, 'Stop sticking with artists through thick and thin. If I stop entertaining you, kick me to the curb.' Actually the entire Make Happy special has a lot to do with the concept of performance and relatability it's a good supplemental viewing to this video.

Tbh, most Asian content creators who are successful from KZbin moved on to another venture or are super lowkey about the wealth they possessed. Idk if it's a cultural thing but so far Asian creators like Wong Fu, Anna Akana, Ryan Higa and RHPC, JK party, and family vloggers (they're a lot) to name a few don't exactly strike me to have this whole "not relatable" issue.

One of my favourite KZbinrs, Bestdressed, is a really good example of how you can make money and still be relatable. She started KZbin as a very poor college student and based a lot of her content around thrifted fashion- she still thrifts a ton because she lives in expensive places, so her cost of living is much higher. But she also recognises the fact that she's no longer struggling with 5 roommates; she explicitly said that it's why she stopped making jokes about being poor: she no longer felt like she was in a position to do that. A lot of her content is also relatable regardless of income, things like self-image, sex-positivity, and trying to plan for what you want out of life.

There's also a huge difference between making content focused on relatability and making contents about your daily life. If their channel leans toward sharing their privileged life its not alienating their audience rather it's just how life has been going on for themselves and some people enjoy those type of contents, their rawness, although it might look ignorant to some but we just got to accept what they really are

im in the age category that has seen the "girly girl exaggerated" content (even though I was a little late) and also the "white girl who will probably move to la" era that's happening/winding down? and it's really just shocking. they really are so different but it seems like other things follow suit, (musically->tiktok) (Instagram changing) (vidcon->playlist) and I guess the new "relatable aesthetic" content creators are changing a lot and it's very interesting to see how they are going to change a new wave of social media culture. (I think it's kinda already going downhill with aesthetic culture kinda turning to flex and unrelatable culture with some creators) but overall how this is going to change.
