My sister still acts as if she’s “not like other girls” and she literally reminds me of how I used to act... And I feel bad because she was probably influenced by my behavior towards others back then. I bought a nice t shirt the other day and she just looked at me weirdly like “since when do you care about how you look? Are you becoming like those popular girls?” And it does NOT help my mum encourages it. Whenever my sister talks about how she’s into anime she’s always like “some of us like anime in my class so we just sorta talk among ourselves away from the popular girls” and my mums all like “yeah forget those popular girls, just stick to the geeky lot” like noooo people shouldn’t be put into boxes like “the populars” and “the geeks” as if that’s their entire personalities. I love anime, but I still talk to what my family would call “popular basic girls” because they’re really nice.

Exactly. With maturity and growing out of the phase, I think I started to realize how complex people are and how they really can't be boiled down to interests or appearance. I don't think we as individuals can be defined. Especially since we are constantly changing, learning and acquiring new tastes, perspectives, etc. All people are so beautiful and have something to offer, I think. I am so glad I look at other girls with love now instead of judging them if their interests didn't match mine. Because it's beautiful to find interest and passion in something you love! And I love seeing other people doing that and being happy. In doing so, I've been able to heal my internalized misogyny and accept and love the feminine aspects of who I am. My grandma's aunt told me since I was a little girl I didn't have the need to have a male by my side. She was a single mother, worked for a big company when she was young, always dressed like a top class lady, behaved properly and had a very magnetic personality. Being femenine isn't being weak. Another problem I have is when things like cooking, sewing etc are portrayed as feminine. They have nothing to do with gender. These are basic, technical, practical life skills that everyone should have at a very basic level (no need to be a chef or master tailor, but you have no be able to mend your clothes and cook yourself a meal).

I always find it weird when people act like men are unable to do stuff like cooking/sewing/.., it really seems pretty degrading to me to assume that all men are unable to perform even the most basic practical skills that might even save them money. It might come from the fact that some girls limit their diets a lot or starve themselves to be skinny. It may be harmfully viewed as them being caught up in their looks instead of it being an eating disorder or that they need help. I always hated the tomboy term, actually. It pretty much implies that wearing hoodies, liking sports or comic books is a defining "boy" trait, when it's really not. Historically, men have always said that about certain professions until women started being involved and productive in them. Etc; writing was thought to be only for the "intelligent, thoughtful man" until women began writing novels and now suddenly it's perceived as a simple, deadbeat career. :/ Same goes for art, and for biology - when more women began working as nurses and doctors. (So the field would benefit from more women) But I'm just so tired of this race of trying to prove men we're equal. They'll always find the next thing that women do and claim it's easy and lower the pay. Young women in Finland are high-achievers, work harder, put more effort to look better and have better social skills than young men, but still they are more represented in low-tier jobs, masters' that don't lead to a job, and female-dominated high education jobs have smaller salaries. Women have to be more experienced and proper for the same job. Young Finnish women take more antidepressants and have a higher suicide rating among European women, than men take or have among European men. We put so much effort in order to "make it". It feels like a fight we can't win. Men are just so dim that they don't realize we're equal even if we're way past that. It doesn't seem to matter what we do.

Nana I don’t think art has been a more profitable profession before our time. It’s been studied and admired post the artists’ death, but acting was seen as being equal to prostitution, painters, even masters like Rembrandt, died penniless and abused, writers were often censored, mostly singers and musicians were the ones taken most seriously, and even then, it was the select few. Painting lost its meaning when Picasso painted the shit he did and called it “Art”, spawning generations of people throwing colors on a canvas and calling themselves “artists”, until painting has stooped to such a ridiculous low, nobody takes a painter seriously until they see the work. I've noticed that it does not matter if you're stereotypically girly or stereotypically a tomboy. I myself grew up with 2 brothers and am I not girly girl. Throughout my life I've felt just as insecure and afraid of being judged by other girls as my very girly friends. I think you can't talk about this 'trend' without mentioning 'everyone hates teenage girls' thing. Basically anything that's popular with teenage girls gets hated on by literally anyone else. Think about it, there's: Justin B, 1D, Hunger games, and more recently the Vesco girl (is the sksksksk included in that?idk), E-girl and vegan/environmentalist girl. This could be a reason why girls say their aren't like other girls because of the widespread hatred of things teenage girls like so they feel as if being anything like that is wrong because they are being constantly subjected to bashing online because it's a trend.... I have always hated this so much. I grew up to be a feminine, pink-obsessed, woman, with my nails painted and my make up done every day. I love doing this for myself, it makes me feel pretty. And I also happen to be a PhD student, and a teacher, and somehow for lots of people in academia, these two aspects of me can't coexist. Either I'm too pretty or too "pink" to be really smart, or I'm trying too hard on things that don't really matter like makeup and other "feminine hobbies". Apparently, the idea of women in academia is for us to conform either to the specific stereotype of the "library-mouse" (as I like to call it) or we are expected to be vain, and fickle, and superficial if omg look she's got her nails painted pink. Ugh. I am exactly like other girls!

I was often told when I was younger, by boys and men, that I was so cool that I was not like other girls. Especially in online games where I played really well and competitively. Sometimes they would refuse to believe I was female. It used to make me feel proud and special. Now it makes me pissed of. It was not a compliment, they were actually saying that "we do not expect a female to be able to be good at "masculine" stuff". As a female I now realize that it's offending as frak. It's getting better, but I'm looking forward to the day when a person is judged from their actions alone, and not their genitalia. I’m so grateful for the experience of unlearning and continuing to unlearn toxic ideologies. I think it for me honestly comes down to an evaluation of the inherent disparity in the power dynamics of white women & (in my case) black women. The term "basic white girl" was used not to separate myself from white girls as I am a woman, but to separate myself from them as I am a black woman. White women get away with a lot of shit there's no way black women could get away with. The "basic white girl" became a caricature of those differences. Becky and Shanice are two different people & society at large will not let us forget it. I've had to take a step back and reconsider my use of the term, though. No matter how I split it white women are like my cousins in the struggle. It's easy to poke fun but having actual conversations about our differences and the way we should interact with each other in light of them is much more constructive than making another "you don't season your food" joke.

One thing that i think is also really important to this discussion is the intersection of queerness and being "not like other girls". I have seen SO many stories from people being like "i used to be so proud of myself for not being boy-obsessed like all those 'OTHER GIRLS🙄🙄' but i actually was just a lesbian/asexual lol" or the case that i also experienced of being a "tomboy" and hating girly things, and priding yourself on how not dainty and feminine you are and how you hate the color pink (which is a lovely color btw), and then ending up being trans!! And while the internalized misogyny is still FLAMING in this scenario, there's also the possibility of some of it also coming from what was probably unrealized gender dysphoria. And it definitely does originate from like you mentioned, growing up in a very cis-heteronormative society, where the answer is NEVER queerness and instead just an odd cishet girl who's "just a little different!!" and then feeling like you have to defend yourself for these inherent differences that maybe even YOU don't understand. I didn't realize I was trans until probably around two years after finally getting out of that toxic not like other girls mindset. And because you're a "girl" the only logical way to do that and to validate yourself in the eys of society is to be the ideal form of a girl. And to put down other girls is the only way to achieve that top position.

Growing up as someone with Autism I struggled with trying to fit in and make friends. So I really latched onto the "I'm not like other girls!" attitude as a defense mechanism and to try and fit in with the guys I thought were cool and the girls who also identified with that attitude. And it took years to unlearn that attitude and to realize how harmful it was to both me, and to other people. This was a really interesting video to watch and I'm so glad you talked about it!

When you started talking about the "Not Like Other Girls" behavior as a defense mechanism, I got super emotional. That's exactly what I did growing up, and I think lots of girls who fall into these ideas experienced similar things. When you've been bullied and ostracized by these "normal" or "other" girls, anyone who looks or acts like said "other girls" starts to look like an enemy to you. You want to distance yourself and rationalize their poor treatment of you by convincing yourself that those differences that isolate you make you better than them.

I was also bullied by “normal” girls for being into boyish things and after a while it’s normal to try to take pride in it so that not being like other girls turns into something positive. And tbh I notice that I still have this attitude, but mostly because I also still get negative comments on my interests. E.g. I recently bought a gaming console for myself and one of my friends thought that was very weird for a girl. Which is obviously not true, but it does make me think “well at least I dont have boring interests that 99%” of girls do”. So yes it’s a bad attitude to have but also a LOT of girls and guys are still very close-minded when it comes to interests

Growing up (and quite frankly, even still), a boy’s type was anyone but me. So I concluded that the reason I wasn’t wanted was because I must not be like all the other girls, the girls that are wanted. As an adult, I now understand that boys are people too, and just like there are guys who like one type of girl, there are guys who like other types too-MY type. Now I just need to find where they are. Also, just to be clear, of course there are also people who like people, gender irrelevant. I am just speaking from my own experience and perspective. My point is that I realized there’s someone for everyone, and that includes me!

truth is they were probably dealing with their own insecurities so they tried to make you feel bad about being yourself, especially when you get older and those women who look like the girls who bullied you in middle school and high school aren't actually bad people

This!! I was bullied growing up so I really tried to separate myself from most girls and tried to identify myself as not like other girls. As an adult now I realize that's a toxic way to think and gender had nothing to do with my disliking the bully.

The "men are funnier" thing would be so interesting as it's own video. I've observed this myself (probably my own internalised misogyny leaking) and wondering why male comedians can say/do something dumb or controversial and be considered funny, while if a woman did the exact same joke it would not be considered even half as funny. Why? What's the difference? I've noticed women comedians can't be too sexualised in their comedy, since for some reason women can't be both sexy AND funny. They can't present themselves as hyper-feminine, they've got to be the perfect mix of "pretty" but approachable (like Kristen Wiig or Mindy Kaling). Their jokes have got to be broadly relatable and not solely about the female experience (because MeN don't want to hear about periods and motherhood!! That's just "women's comedy". Meanwhile men comedians can talk solely about the male experience to a broad demographic). It's like the concept of "not like other girls" is still powerful in comedy since it's still seen as a male-dominated space. Idk this has turned into a brain mush, but it just gives me a headache at how female comedians are treated so differently than their male counterparts

Katya hi. Try watching Ali Wong’s shows on Netflix or perhaps you can find it here on youtube. She’s really funny and probably one of the first women comedian I discovered to be so natural. It’s amazing how a representation of the wide spectrum of women could expand the perspective of every individual cause I used to think the same thing too that women aren’t as funny as men.

like Dave chappelle (who I love with all my heart💞💓💖💘💘💕❣️💝💞) has the most controversial and offensive jokes they’re not even considered offensive anymore to his viewers because hes literally been doing comedy for like 30 years. he makes jokes about the lgbt community(and always gives disclaimers and is VERY respectful abt them) and the black and white community, politics and racists, rapists and murderers + othersss .he talks abt bill cosby, Louis ck, Michael jackson, oj simpson, the woman who got fired from the food Network because she said the n word years ago and racist police. a recent special( i personality loved because its was so apologetic) which didnt really sit well with me was when he made jokes about the Michael jackson doc ‘leaving neverland’ and made jokes like “do yk now how a kid would feel coming to school the next day after the king of pop s*cked his d*ck, the kid would say if I’m starting here mmmh then sky’s the limit” (sorry I cackled) and then said if I was a pedophile Macaulay culkin’s the first kid I’m f*cking you know how hard he is to catch (cause he’s the kid form home alone) anyways he got least amount of backlash but taht h I have I thought was weird because if anyone else said that there would be an uprage. dave chappelle is a legendary comic who I so love btw except for this because so many young boys were affected by Michael jacksons alleged sexual abuse.

the phrase in itself only refers to boys doing stupid and silly things because they're boys, the toxicity comes from the people that use it to excuse terribe behavior

@@lau.cami2074 But I feel it still is at least pretty silly, even when not used to excuse really bad behaviour (I'm not a native English speaker so I don't really know to much about how the phrase is used but hearing it in Daniell Howell's "Basically, I'm Gay" video once honestly was enough for me to hate it). In the end girls also do most of the same "stupid and silly things" like boys do. I mean at least I can remember it pretty clearly from my childhood. So if you really want to use the phrase you could just say "kids will be kids" because that's what if is really about, if you use it in a non-toxic situation.

@@Tessa_Gr An example of this phrase's toxicity is bullying among boys - where someone needs to step in but no one does because "boys will be boys". This hurts the victim and the bullies who now believe that they can do whatever they want because they're excused by this phrase. Maybe the situation involves drugs or inappropriate comments towards girls, but in all cases it's dangerous.
