It just depends on how much and realistically how fast you can get your money back. I've had to pay for security card to work in a poker room (expensive) but made it back quick. Same thing with uniforms, work supplies. Unfortunately though a lot of the mlm companies charge jizload for crap quality products to the employee/sales person/sap who then has to try to sell it for then more jizload.
@rocsiali4092

Oh and the annual fee which only is to cover "membership" is ridiculous. I can pay for products cheaper, sell cheap, still make money without paying "membership". But what most popular mlms do provide is the advertising therefore easier to get customers....until you're competing with a huge amount of employees for the same customers for the same product....

I did hate it too when businesses I worked at- stores and restaurants- made me buy my damn uniforms, then return them. I understand why, but at the same time, if I'm making $6.25/hr, it does seem pretty miserly. (But I was probably the only one nerdy enough to return these items, too..)

I was 14, an MLM had set up a booth at the local mall probably thinking they could get more customers. I was in high school, and I drifted off away from my mother when she was shopping, I caught the attention of one of the sales people. She somehow coxed me, and proceeded to put make up all over my face, and at first I liked it. I asked how much it was she tried to sell me everything costing up wards to 140.00 dollars. Trying to find any excuse possible Im like "my mom wont buy this", "I cant afford it". She said and I quote "just take your moms master card and use it--its fine". I was told to legit steal! My heart sank, mom works hard every day at her job, and for this lady just to make a quick buck was manipulating a 14 year old, still boggles my mind to this day.

@@saffymccabe7705 There are differences between a franchise and an MLM: -You need a business license to run a franchise. You do not need one to sell for an MLM. -With franchising, you are not the owner of the whole corporation, but you do own your own LLC. I used to work at Subway, and all Subways are franchised. Not once did my paychecks ever say Subway on them, they said my forner boss's (the franchise owner) company on them. My former boss does not own Subway, but he owns a small company that allows him to be able to own Subway locations. An MLM salesperson owns nothing except the products they bought from their upline. -There is no pressure to recruit or have a downline in franchising.

Someone tried to get me into an MLM once. Luckily I knew about MLMs and turned them down repeatedly. But the way they tried to sell this, is by saying that you basically get your own business where you sell stuff, and any retailer would have to buy their stuff from wholesale first as well, so it makes sense (not what I think, but how they explained it). Any additional fees are even less than most licenses and the likes you would have to get! (Again, their words, not mine) But you don't need to worry about branding, making designs/logo/housestyle, they'll even train you on how to sell your stuff, etc! If you start your own job, you would have to do all of that youself and pay for it yourself (I'll just keep repeating that these are not my words and I don't believe in this nonsense). So they sell it as an investment in your own company, which would be smaller than the investment you would actually have to pay if you started your own company. Of course, all of this is nonsense. If their product is that good and sells that well, it would just be in stores being sold by normally paid employees. Because you're not actually starting your own business. Which business starter has higher-ups to pay monthly fees to?! You're an unpaid employee, who somehow has to pay to be allowed to work. That's the reality. But they don't frame it like that. That's why no alarmbells go off for the people who fall for this. By the way, the person who tried to recrute me, later confessed to all their friends for having fallen for an MLM, having lost a lot of money due to unsold inventory, and she confessed all her beautiful stories were a lie, because she was so desperate to get out of debt. Which, of course, never happened, as she couldn't sell nor recruit enough. I did buy sime things off of her when she was still in the MLM, as I felt bad for her, and I actually happened to need the household products she sold. I still have some of them. They were actually good products. Just overpriced, which made them hard to sell. I know, I shouldn't have spent money on an MLM product. I was one of those suckers who just felt really bad for their friend. If this ever happens again, and they won't heed my warnings again, I'll just wait for the bubble to burst and then try to help them find an actual job instead. I think that would be a better help.

YES THIS. It is so offensive to people who actually did establish and do run their own business from start to finish. The main thing that gets me is that these MLM ladies never seem to understand the difference between being a predatory sales rep, and being the person who is actually taking ALL of the risk and putting everything on the line for their business. Yes, entrepreneurship has lots of rewards, but also lots of risk. If one of my customers has a problem with my product, I am the person responsible. I am the person who has to fix it. If I have problems with a supplier or something, yes, I can "blame" them but ultimately the buck stops here. I'm the person putting blood, sweat and tears into my company, I am the person driving everything, from strategy decisions to branding, messaging and sales to accounting, good business practices, CRM, supplier management, quality assurance, etc. etc. etc. I can outsource some of this work but the responsibility falls squarely on my shoulders. And when it works, it's AWESOME. But it's a FAR CRY from MLM sales rep recruitment. And it's so offensive when these MLM ladies compare the two like they're one and the same. Entrepreneurs do not call their businesses a "side hustle"

This is what’s been nagging me the most. Advertising being home with their babies and guilting other moms who work. I know ultimately it was my decision to join an mlm. I’m the one to blame. I was 7-8 months postpartum when I joined. I was a full time nurse working nights. It started affecting me so much that I could not be home with my son. All the constant posts and stories just kept making it worse. Specially my own coach who was a “ retired” nurse. Eventually my husband and I decided I went part time and I’ve slowly opened up my eyes to their lies. Specially seeing that they have to be on their phones 24/7. How in the world are you able to tend to your children when you got to “hustle” all day? I never ever cold messaged anyone. That just put me off from the get go. The last call I ever attended was a “top coach” that said you have to message 60 people everyday. She also swore so much that a lot of people starting logging off. Most of those moms that have their kids around also listening to what’s being said.

Don't know, both of my parents were working when I grew up and it was more or less my Gran who raised me. So for me my Gran was my mother figure more than my mother ever was or will be (my father died when I was 12). I have more of a friendship or sisterly relationship with my mom. It's okay for me though. I don't fault her or anything. Most families have to have two working parents to make ends meet nowadays. It was a big problem for my mom and there was s time when she tried to force the issue. Didn't work. She doesn't get to dictate the way I see her or my Gran just because she birthed me. She just wasn't there enough to look at her as a mother. It took a long time for her to come to terms with that. But that is the risk if you decide to have children when both parents have to work 🤷‍♀️ That doesn't make it okay to guilt trip moms, however. The world is not kind to parents or their children as a whole. It's not their fault, it's just life.

Stay at home moms are extremely rare, almost nonexistent, where I live. Sending your kids to daycare is the norm. And honestly, part of me feels like that's BETTER for the child. I get that you want to be with your kids, however in daycare you not only learn a bunch of stuff but you also get socialized from an early age! It's basically like a playful pre-preschool. Though I also see some Americans even complaining about schools and opting to homeschool their kids instead...... No idea how tf that works, and it seems like it would negatively impact the child's social development.

And the truth is, those who join only have friends for as long as they're active consultants. To my eternal chagrin, I represented an MLM for five years and none of my "friends" kept in touch when I left. These are people I saw weekly for YEARS. Some of that is probably down to circumstances changing since strong friendships tend to be with people who share our core values and beliefs, and when you're in an MLM they hijack all of those and twist them to make the MLM the center of your life. Even though I know that, it's weird and sad to me that none of those friends ever texted me on her own, even for my birthday or something general like that. It's like I fell off the face of the planet when I quit. And that's what happens to most of us, I think. Now I have friends who care about people, not selling things.

Many years ago this girl that I went to high school with sent out an invitation to everyone for a high school reunion/get together at her and her husband’s house. We thought heck why not so a bunch of my friends and I that never lost touch went and a few other girls from school also showed up. When we got there, there’s like 20 other people we do not know, some were as much as 30 years older than us so definitely not from high school. Turns out her and her husband sent out invitations to different groups under the guise of whatever they share in common (high school reunion, ex-coworkers and/or present coworkers getting together, etc) and they pretty much held us hostage to listen to their presentation for over 2 hours. The product? A $500-dollar landline phone that does video calls. A bunch of us were like uhh we all have iPhones and android phones why in the world would we want a landline version that has limited capabilities and we have to purchase several every month. I think all politeness went out the window. One of the girls I came with was the first to walk out without a word with me right at her heels and by the time we got to the curb (we street parked since the hosts lived in an apartment), there were 10-12 more people from the same party that exited with us. Long story short the girl created a post about us on Facebook but we didn’t even care because the people we care to be friends with we are still hanging out with anyway. They should call MLMs the relationship destroyer.

But lucky me, I already knew because she had been trying to recruit my other friends before me. So I straight out told her, "Yeah, this is an MLM. I don't think I'm cut out for that. I don't like selling things. And I don't have the people skills to recruit others." But I kinda felt more disappointed because we are business graduates and we were told multiple times about these MLMs and their dangers. And yet here we are.

Something that makes me even sadder for these people is that a lot of them have developed great sales and people skills-- if they were to put that much effort into starting their own business legitimately, or getting a commissioned-based job for a non-MLM, they could be making so much more and still get the benefits of flexible hours, working from home, etc.
@UdoADHD

Natalie Crowley i know some people leave their MLM to go into car sales or something like that. The point is that they have the skill now to succeed in sales and just need the foot traffic. MLM requires that you, a regular person with little influence, produce your own foot traffic but put that person in a place where they can focus on just their sales skills and they do decent. But anyone who is both good at sales AND good at marketing will make money anywhere no matter what it is.

Im glad i eventually got the confidence to leave and say im done with it all because i got so angry and tired of the lack of care they have for relationships and lives. Its so sad they make people who are good natured feel like they are the bad person for "not putting enough work in" or "thinking big enough". I never cared about the stupid car you win or the trips (even though you still are in debt from all you have to do to get no where). Arbonne is the company I was with. Their products arent bad but not worth calling up old acquaintances you never even spoke to, just to further ruin a relationship you never even got to start. Point, dont feel bad to say no if you dont feel right as soon as you hear something. Do something because YOU want to, not because you were pressured.

12:09 This reminded me of a party I went to. A friend (now ex-friend) was getting married and I was invited to her bachelorette party. The night before the party she texted us and told us to bring cash, and didn’t tell us anything else. Just bring cash. We all thought she was hiring a stripper or that we were going to a strip club or night club, so we all brought enough for tips and maybe a cover charge and drinks if we were going out. I was working a minimum wage job at the time, so I had to scrape together enough at the last minute and pulled out $18 from my bank account the day of the party. When we got there, there was a sales woman from Slumber Party, which is an adult toys and novelties MLM. She went through her pitch and we all politely considered things, but ultimately none of us were going to buy because we all had $50 or less on us and a lot of the stuff was hundreds of dollars. I guess at the time Slumber Party had an offer for brides where they could throw a Slumber Party sales pitch as their bachelorette party and get a cut of the sales person’s commission. It’s a win-win for the sales person and the bride, but a lose-lose for all of us. When we all wanted to take the sales lady’s card and not buy anything that night, the bride lost her shit. If nobody bought anything during the party, the bride would lose out on her cut of the commission. She threatened to kick us all out of her wedding if we left without buying anything, including her bridesmaids. She gaslit everyone like it was Victorian London, started a sobbing tantrum, stomped up to her bedroom and slammed her door like a toddler. Her mother then turned on us and screamed at us for making the bride cry during her own bachelorette party. The sales lady looked like she wanted to die where she stood, and we all felt something similar. To keep the peace we all bought something, but to this day I wish I had the self-esteem to tell that bitch to go fuck herself and her wedding. I bought the cheapest thing which was a glow-in-the-dark condom. The sales lady said it was $6 but with taxes and fees came out to $20, so I had to bum a couple of bucks off one of my friends for a goddamn condom. But I was poor and wanted free wedding food lol 😂 but that party was the moment our friendship really ended. Edited for clarity.

However, in the last year I have gotten quite a few of the "It's been a long time such we spoke but I was thinking of you, how are you?". At first I thought these women were actually reaching out so answered only to get hit with "I'm having a get together at my place with mini pedis and some refreshments, love it if you'd come. It's a chance to catch up and get pampered". At least I knew right away what it meant so would come right out and say that I'm not interested nor a supporter of MLMs so can't make it. They answer with fake shock and promises that I don't have to buy anything and they just want to see me again. I don't go, make an excuse my child is sick but would love to meet for a playdate or lunch sometime. Crickets! Never hear from these women again...until the next party. So is no one going to talk about Primerica? They're targeting the most vulnerable, 18 years olds fresh out of high school to sell life insurance policies. I have a friend that is already far into and basically opted out of going to UC Santa Barbara to further pursue this sham. They're all told education is a sham because of student debt and honestly the tipping point for me was when they spoke ill of teachers saying it was basically their fault they were being treated so badly.

My college roommate once won a "free 45 minute facial for you and a friend" as part of some kind of raffle/drawing at a work event (or possibly a Greek life thing?). We were broke and really excited for a fancy pampering experience. The lady showed up to our dorm room and it turned out our "facials" were a Mary Kay presentation/sales pitch/polite bullying experience wherein we got to try tiny samples of makeup and moisturizers. I remember both of us feeling overwhelmingly embarrassed, as if *we* had done something wrong? So we just sat there for 45 minutes nodding and listening, and each wound up buying something small just to get it all over with. I wish to this day I'd firmly but kindly given that lady a piece of my mind for the false advertising BS, and kicked her out.

I had a friend that entered mine and another friend's name/number at some raffle at an event as well (we didn't know about it) and we get a text that we had supposedly won "free facials". We just had to call the lady to set up our appointment. It got to the point that the lady would text me everyday asking if I'd like to meet that day blah blah blah. I eventually blocked her number because of how annoying she was. But it never occured to me that it might have just been a sales pitch or something else! I'm glad I skipped out on that

Hi, it freaks me out how people buy that kind of shit, they waste money on stuff that doesn't even work (Herbalife and Omnilife). I see older people spending money to be "healthier" when they barely can afford it, because they believe it will work, it will help them with memory loss, obesity, even cancer. My aunt got in debt because of Herbalife, I remember very vividly how my cousins would have a shake every morning because they were really poor and they invested a lot on those products. The last experience that I had with an MLM was last year, I thought I got an interview for a job and it turned out to be one of those "parties" where they invited you to join them. Worst part: after an hour of hearing bs there were people that actually believed them and started working for them. I can only hope that they are okay now. Esas weas deberían ser ilegales 🙄

Yep when I was like 19 or 20 I bought a train ticket and traveled to another city for a "job interview" that turned out just to be some dude meeting me in a cafe and trying to recruit me to sell energy drinks. I had put a job search notification online and he had called me directly to my phone to talk about a job opportunity in "sales" and mentioned about being a startup company, I asked for a confirmation email and he send me a time and a location that was next to a big mall in another city, being inexperienced and naive I just went through it. Somewhere in the middle of the interview I realized what was going on when he pulled out an energy drink which was the company's "product" and told me I'd have to buy it if I wanted to try it and said there's convention going on that I should go see in a couple of weeks and get back to him about the job. He talked me 2-3 more times after that but I never went to the convention.

my mom has been apart of these mlm's for my entire life, she's switched between different companies that marketed different things. As I got older she started to really focus on the team building part, but no in a positive way. While yes it was a side hustle she was passionate about, it literally broke my family apart. She became obsessed with this company, wanting to get up the rank so she could maybe get a "free" car or to go on a dream vacation. The only money that she ever really get from is enough to buy takeout on a rough night. I really hope for anyone who has a stay at home mom like mine, that they educate their parents. It's too much to lose, trust me!

I could be wrong, but I believe that back in the day with Tupperware and Pampered Chef and sex toy parties, the person selling them doesn't buy a bunch of stock wholesale--they just facilitate orders and get a commission on the sale after the fact. I'm sure the MLM companies that exist today realized it was much more lucrative to force people to buy product that THEY then have to unload. I mean, as far as the company is concerned, the product is sold, so what do they care? :/
