The 'Why didn't you speak up before' question can be so idiotic. When something awkward, uncomfortable or humiliating happens, we tend to question our perception of reality, or just justify it by convincing ourselves is not a big deal. But when you see other people had the same experience, you realize that 'it wasn't just you', but it did happen, and it is a big deal. And I think we can all think about a moment or situation in our lives when this happened to ourselves.

Still, it's racist that black girls aren't "pretty" according to societal norms. It all comes down to the social hierarchy of a racist/patriarchial/generally bigoted society. (By misogynistic, I mean that "quirky" is either used by girls who say "they're not like other girls," guys who want to sh*t on femininity and thus women - or vice versa - or by writers who want to write a "manic pixie dream girl," female characters with no real personality/agency/plot relevance, and/or just stereotypes.)

@A Matan Dote is not a charity. Dote is not an NPO. Dote is a for-profit company started by a white woman who partnered with Urban, Brandy, UNIF etc. to make sales through its portal. These are mostly middle class brands supported in the USA primarily by white girls. Customers create accounts, then can have followers. Dote came up with the brilliant idea to partner with KZbinrs and offer coupon codes for followed accounts. Dote struck gold with Emma, Ellie, Hannah, Summer, Marla promoting Dote and then vlogging fun videos of their trips. Because they were all white, those girls and Dote started getting hate after Coachella 2018 because Dote was accused of just picking white girls. So for Fiji Dote gave all its followed accounts a follow number to hit to be invited. Non-white girls didn't hit those numbers, so Dote actually screwed over white girls who made the count so Kianna and a few other non-white girls could go in order to appease the scream of mandatory diversity. Kianna admitted this. The white girls on the lower follow end have always received less attention in photoshoots and bedrooms. Emma, Ellie, Hannah and their IGs and thus accounts were printing money for Dote. White girls with higher follow and sales revenue were again passed over for Coachella 2019 so more non-white girls could go. That large room with couches had been designated for anyone regardless of color as of course Dote was going to reward Ellie, Hannah, Ava, Summer for actually making money for Dote, but the non-white girls who didn't actually promote Dote screamed racism while accepting their FREE $1000 trip with food, tickets, accessories etc.

Ed Murrow Companies should promote equality. Sorry if black people have the power to ruin your image then it obviously matters 😂 It’s not a charity therefore they need to do GOOD marketing and that equates to diversity. So even if they didn’t give a shit about equality they have to. Honestly it doesn’t matter if shit is free if you see other people are treated better and everything is segregated. That’s awkward AF. So by your logic rich, privileged kids should never ever complain about when they get robbed or anything that doesn’t physically harm them because ‘shut up you have money’

@rosejacklyn5 жыл бұрын
I understand you 100%. Lack of promotion and inclusiveness messes with your head. Latin America has so many issues with this, and it’s sad. Every shampoo bottle, every ad for financial or academic institutions, every food ad always only shows Caucasian people (white skin, European white features). In the USA, people expect fair treatment and equality since that’s all the country has apparently fought so hard to be known for; however, we rarely see it applied in real life to poc, other body types, different sexualities, people with disabilities, etc. White privileged people in other countries are celebrated when they are minorities bc they are so “different and exotic”, and when they are the majority, they use the “well, we are more represented bc there are more of us” argument without realizing they are put on a pedestal no matter what. Racism stems from the centuries of white colonizers enslaving, mistreating and stealing from poc around the world. And somehow they think a movie like Black Panther should appease minorities.

As a colombian as well i really see the huge problem we have. Since i was little (i'm currently 15 btw) i saw how my brown and black friends were treated in a poorly way, i never fully understood that until i grew up a little bit more, but since then i feel disgusted when people treat me better just because i'm white and blonde, cause i don't think that makes me better than anyone else. And it is such a sick thing, cause we are practically giving privilege to people who fit into the caucasian(european, north america) beauty standards, the same standards of the people who is always segregating us, also is awful to see how much racism we are always seeing on television. It is really concerning because african colombian people are not even minorities, and practically we are a diverse country, because, since the conquest, we are mixed with european people (they came from Spain), black people (african slaves) and natives. Not talking about the racism towards the natives, which is bigger. I hope we will soon solve those problems we have as a society

And every time they want to be inclusive about us is always Mexican culture (nothing wrong with being Mexican, but the rest of Latinoamérican countries also have a lot of culture different from the Mexican one) Edit 2: IK HISPANIC ISNT A RACE. But there is more to being Hispanic than just saying “Mi mama me pega con la chancla”. That’s an exaggeration and a minimization of our culture. We DO have paper white people, we DO have really dark complexions, we DO have mixed people, We DO have native people . But we also have a lack of representation as cultures AND a lack of representation in the mixed portion and native one, because at the end of the day even if (for example) a white Latino see a tv show and there is 0 Hispanic representation, she/he will still represent itself in the white characters, will say “Oh, I look like that”. Honestly as an asian, when I walk into a new environment now and I don’t know anyone, I feel so much more welcome and comfortable sticking with girls of colour. It sounds really dividing and discriminatory but the overwhelming majority of racism I’ve gotten was from white people who I trusted and thought were my friends, so I put two and two together and that’s just where I’m at now. I don’t feel like hurting my feelings just so I can give everyone an equal opportunity, I also deserve to care for myself and protect myself. One of my closest friends is white but she didn’t hang out with solely white people, I haven’t gone into a single group of only white people where I haven’t eventually been told something hurtful or had someone’s parents say/call me something racist. I can usually trust that other coloured girls have been through similar experiences and are there for me, because racism really effects you, it makes you feel insecure and less than perfect, and that’s not something young people or any people for that matter should go through.
@neomu-multi4 жыл бұрын
Elaine Lamoureux that’s actually me, as a black african girl, if i walk into a new environment i just automatically try to befriend with minorities. it’s not that i think all white people are racist it’s just that they seem to click so easily and some of ‘em unconsciously (or intentionally) group among themselves and don’t even try to include/acknowledge us. so yeah, i mostly stick with minorities because i know what it feels to be left out, and i do know the feeling of being in a place and being completely ignored or straight up mistreated just because of my physique. it doesn’t mean that we hate white people, it’s just that some of us had to deal with some of their worst types for so many times that we prefer to not take the risk.

@@monalisa9636 To put it as simply as possible, there is power in numbers. There is something to be said of a strong support system and especially when a person of a more "privilege" position in our country and speak up against injustices. Being a REAL ally is not about validating struggle or "being a savior" and more about recognizing the mess that is and fighting for change in the same way that a POC would, because while privilege is probably great, it's wrong. I also believe in giving props where they're due. @@monalisa9636 I agree with your sentiment and also think that the perceived need for a white "ally" can be demeaning. But it seems in this situation, part of the issue is that these women's experiences are not being heard. Any voice that brings greater attention to those experiences helps. This video provides an additional gateway to learning about the issue by broadcasting their voices, rather than attempting to speak for them. As an older white woman myself with no interest in fashion or knowledge of any of the parties to this issue, I would likely have never heard of it if not for a suggested video from an unfamiliar creator. A few months ago in school my class and I watched this pbs documentary about this all white school with kids that probably were in third grade. These kids were racist and would say the n word, call Asians “yellow skins”, and so on (i think this was filmed in the 70s). The teacher held an experiment where blue eyed kids were superior to brown eyed kids and blue eyed kids got 5 more minutes of recess, got to drink from both water fountains in the class, and were treated better. The next day they switched roles and brown eyed kids were one superior. I recommend it, the documentary provides an interesting perspective on racism for those who are not poc.

@@missshannonsunshine I know that, as a white person, I really have no authority on this but I do have a question (don't want to force someone to explain the complex social and cultural factors associated with their existence/identity just because of MY ignorance, so really questions for any POC) - by this do you mean spaces for black people (or black + female, LGBTQIA, plus-size, etc.) only or those spaces along with better diversity in general spaces (to avoid tokenism, like Dote failed to with minority-only trips)? I know this sounds like a loaded question, but I'm not one of those people who consider (insert marginalized group here)-only spaces reverse (insert type of bigotry here) or who say #notall (insert NON-marginalized group here). Also, assuming that by "all minorities should do it," you mean that spaces for biracial people (or Asian, Hispanic, etc.) are also important, but at least some of them should be separate? Like, spaces for non-white people and then also spaces for biracial, black, Asian, Hispanic people specifically? (That's the racial equivalent of my thoughts about LGBTQIA+ spaces, but I know that marginalized groups don't face all the same struggles nor need the same solutions because, surprisingly, shit is complicated)

i’ve felt the “token black girl” but in school, with my education system being very competitive with grades and such. i’ve expressed this with my parents when they were trying to understand how i didn’t really like myself, but i haven’t really talked about it much. throughout middle school, there were 4 black kids in my grade. in elementary school, there were two. there’s a lot more now in high school, but they all came from a school that was completely underfunded compared to the majority white school. in middle school, there was two other black girls and one black guy. the guy was considered a dumbass and rude, another girl was like this, and another was known for being good at sports. i was known because i was in the higher classes. that’s almost all i was known for. i felt more pressured to be good at school, because each one of us was known for something, and school was mine. it’s like i had to present myself as “a smart student, more educated than what you would think of a black girl!” i once had a teacher tell me “you’re smarter than i expected you to be.” in sixth grade. after that, i tried my hardest to be better so then no one would assume that i obviously wouldn’t be bad at this. it was such a toxic idea of myself that i had to be “the token girl”, and it’s hurt even more now in high school cuz i’m struggling with classes, and it feels like everyone else understands. it’s like i’m losing the one part that people even saw me for. i dunno, it’s been hard for me to explain this for a long time, and this video shows how being “a token girl” of any race can be harmful

I hope you’ll be able to find yourself in a place where the color of your skin doesn’t matter, just your skills and personality. Hope you don’t mind me giving you some advice. You should do some things relaxes you and doesn’t require much of your energy, especially your mental energy since you’ll need that focus to study. Do something you find relaxing and joy in a couple times a week, even if it’s just for half an hour so you don’t feel bad about it. Do you exercise? Exercising is pretty good at releasing endorphin and all those positive chemicals that makes you happy. There are also studies that have shown exercising to be beneficial for studying/learning. You’ll be killing 3 birds w/ 1 stone. There’s a channel called Med School Insiders that gives pretty good study tips and is applicable for all students. Despite his focus on the Medical students, it’s helpful for a general audience. Just realized, these won’t be helpful to you unless you yourself decide to accept it, and you may already know all this. You seem like you’re in a transitional and sensitive phase in your life. Doesn’t help that you’re a teenager. Don’t be afraid to talk to someone you’re close w/ and can trust about your worries. They’ll be there to lend an ear and maybe help guide you. Good luck w/ your endeavors, don’t give up! Find a goal you really want to achieve, that might help?

I'm a 40+yo jewish mother of two teenage African american mixed race children and we need videos like this to help get real conversations going. White Americans who are not affluent have a hard time believing that they have privilege. The folks who grow up in appartments, trailer parks or so-called-manufactured-home-communties take offense at the idea because they only understand privilege as being financially comfortable. They don't understand how even though they fall into the same tax bracket they're given the "benefit of the doubt" when walking into an Ulta they're not followed as an African american would be or when they get pulled over by the police their immediate internal response isn't "am I going to die today" White Privilege isn't just always about financial security. As your video shows; it's a bigger issue and we ALL have to have space in which to speak about it sincerely and with open hearted dialogue so that we can get to a place of understanding and healing.

Alex Force, Firstly, where did you hear that from? I’m Southeast Asian and I do acknowledge that Asians do not experience the magnitude of racism that our fellow black minorities do. However, that doesn’t mean we have “privileges” of that like whites. Maybe it depends on the area, but I live in a very diverse city/county yet almost all the police officers are white. One incident was I got pulled over and while I was not afraid that I would get killed, I was treated differently; belittled. The officer talked to me like I was 5 years old and was literally raising their voice for no reason. Sometimes I’m walking on the sidewalk and police stare at me like I’m crazy. I grew up being told to never touch the white kids if we played tag because their parents were going to call the police on me. Whites (of course not all) in my area were known to accuse minorities of assault A LOT, mostly over accidentally bumping into them. It’s also happened quite a few times where I live although there aren’t many recent cases, but 10 years ago or so, there has been Southeast Asians that get killed by police for practically no reason. Fortunately, that has changed quite a bit over the years. That doesn’t mean we experience what blacks experience because we experience far less police brutality. Our world isn’t equal. You can’t say “Asian privilege” because whites have much much more. Yet, we seemed to have more privileges over blacks just because we are supposed to be a “model minority.” That’s why BLM is very important for everybody. We all need to be treated equally.

I don't really understand why companies like that purposefully avoid including any diversity. Even if you think pragmatically - the more diversity you show, the more groups can relate to your product. Appealing to only white groups is putting all eggs in one basket! The idea is so simple, yet nearly every brand clings to the concept of exclusive whiteness as being a great bet for brand representation. It is not, and the market is starving for the opposite - just look at how Rihanna's brand skyrocketed simply because it is diverse. My point is - diversity is not only good for moral reasons, it's good for business as well.
@embracelifewithemily4 жыл бұрын
Sadly, they do it because it’s what sells. It’s something we’re slipping out of now, but for the longest, we were all so programmed to find lighter people more appealing that the purposeful racism in casting and media was justified by the positive feedback from viewers. I mean, look at Netflix. Look at how many white people are in films compared to everyone else.

Honey they tried to completely cover it up as if they wasn’t ready for the heat. 2019 We do NOT appreciate making any of our beautiful girls of all colors unaccepted. TRY TF AGAIN.

I'm so glad you covered this Tiffany! So many companies use the words "Inclusive" & "diversity" but dont actually implement the actual practices to welcome diversity. It's so annoying. You cant just say your inclusive and then invite WOC on your trips. Look at the staff, photographers, sleeping arrangements in this situation.. diversity TAKES WORK. Dont just slap it on your company like a sticker.

Yeah, it's kind of like greenwashing... I guess you could call it brownwashing.

I'm white, so I obviously don't understand diversity and racism on the same level as POC do, but I can say I relate to "pinkwashing," so I'm not surprised that the same thing happens to other marginalized groups -_-

I think the sleeping situation is reflective of a bigger problem about diversity on youtube in general. Because I think a lot of the white you tubers have much bigger followings than the other you tubers who aren't white, and so its like basically kissing up to more popular you tubers and hope they give them better diversity. but yeah its rude as hell, why would you invite an influencer, who you desire the service of to promote your dumb brand and the treat them like this? ALSO, a lot of these "friendships" are manufactured. I think MyLifeAsEva came out recently and spoke about how artificial these friend groups on social media actually are and she doesn't really hang out with the people she used to anymore.
