@Waleed Abu Osbeh It was a good plan, but with the wrong players playing according to me...... Kyle walker in the defense instead of fernandinho would have taken care of the pace that Guardiola wanted to tackle with the back 3. City was too open in the second leg, conceding 3 goals at home is never going to work in a 2 legged round. Guardiola said City had to attack after being 1-0 down in the first leg but a goal deficit isn't a big disadvantage and City could still manage the game properly. Instead, City were wide open and overall Spurs deserved to go through.

As much as Pep's deep thought is his strength, it's also one of his few weaknesses. You can tell by how tortured he looks by his side even when they're dominating a game, he never looks as though he's enjoying it until the final whistle goes. With regards to the sweeping changes, I'm not sure it's necessarily conservatism, perhaps an over-estimation of the opposition's strengths and an uncharacteristic lack of faith in what makes him so successful domestically.

Stokie09123 I feel like it also has to do with teams who press high. Seeing as he struggles against Liverpool, Tottenham and Barca who have all deployed a sort of press
@edd0f5 жыл бұрын
It's because he wants his team to do the simple things until they reach the other team's area. It is when his players are trying to hard and taking unnecessary risks anywhere in the pitch that you can see his frustration. With his Barca, those things came natural to them because they have been coached to play that way in the academy.
@Stokie091235 жыл бұрын
@@thefutureofsoccer5226 I'd go with that, something to do with his concern about his philosophy not being allowed to play out on the pitch because of the press, but then because of the worry he changes it all up to a system he doesn't truly believe in and one the players aren't accustomed to.
@Stokie091235 жыл бұрын
@@edd0f Fair point, I just think he's a naturally stressed person. Because he's a perfectionist in every sense of the world. It’s 2021 and Pep reaches the UCL final with City. Having beaten PSG in the Semis with a recognised DM in both legs (Rodri in 1st and Fernandinho in 2nd), Pep decides to play with Bernando-Gundo-Foden in Midfield, which left their defensive exposed. Also, starting Sterling, who has been off form all season and hadn’t started any of the QFs or SF ties. Aguero was on the bench, so he didn’t start a recognised CF again either. Arteta does the same thing. In the match vs Villarreal, he doesnt stick to one system and tries to change things before a big game. In the 1st leg, he played Smith-Rowe as a false 9 and had Auba on the bench. Then in the second leg, he plays a 4-1-4-1 with Partey in midfield on his own, 4 attackers and Auba upfront. raketnight hes being outsmarted. By guys like simeone, mourinho or klopp. Top managers themselves. Happened at bayern, happens at man city. He is the best manager for winning leagues, no doubt. No guy gets his teams so ready for the small games. But thats mistly bcs his football philosophy works especially well against smaller sides while guys like mou, simeone and klopp would probably do better in playoffs. Firing up your players, being aggressive, defending supremely well and executing deadly counter attacks. Thats always been the way to beat world class possession teams. Bcs most of the time these guys are smaller and physically weaker. While being extremely good with the ball at their feet, they are bad in 1vs1 physical battles. And his style of play has his central defenders pushing up almost to the middle of the field, which leaves him vulnerable to counter attacks.
@kloschuessel7735 жыл бұрын
raketnight but its not that special. He simply has the philosophy that says if i have the ball, you cant score. If i pass the ball, you have to run after it the entire time. If i have the ball, i can create. Thats cruyffs total football i believe. And now you have the question, how do you counter this? And its hard. You have to have all of your players behind the vall so that you dont get overwhelmed. They have to be extremely disclipined defending and leaving no space or irrelevenat space. And you have to have players that will be physically and mentally able to defend and try to get the ball for 90 minutes while making no mistakes the same time. And if you do that + have quick counter attacks with 2-,3 or maybe 4-5 players + deadly finishing, youll win. I remember bayern vs atletico very well And bayern vs wolfsburg Once we lost to wolfsburg with de bruyne 1:4 i think. Counter attacks One and a half year later we absolutely dominated them, especially in the first half. They never even touched the ball - thats what it felt like. The ball was passed around so well

Bigger games are harder to control simple. Pep builds teams that are good at keeping possession and don't have to do much actual defending. In big games you are always going to come under pressure at some stage of the game. Against smaller teams it is easier to control games.
@ComradeOgilvy19845 жыл бұрын
I agree. I think Guardiola recognizes that his own defense is inconsistent going against the best, if they are not getting >60% possession. But I do believe a bit of overthinking is making this worse. IMHO Sane was the man of the match in the 2-1 win against Liverpool, specifically for how he tracked back and helped win balls in midfield, so not playing Sane is in no way an improvement. MC's weakness is if their passing lanes in midfield can be clogged, they can be forced to play longballs, a playing style which they are weaker at than many other top teams. A game determined by aerial duels is something Guardiola is afraid of at the CL knockout stage for his present squad.

It’s quite simply a mental issue. Because a lot of the line ups we use away are not too dissimilar to the ones we use to win at home, yet for some odd reason sheer inconsistency from a group of player seeps in and that consequently hinders our away form. For example, the game against Watford the other day performances from Mhikhi, Xhaka, Mustafi (and even Aubameyang at some points in that game), were simply not good enough. And despite the numerical advantage, we exhibited an obvious lack of desire and were shockingly unable to control that game. That is something Unai will look to work on for next season

Well said TIFO. I was critical of your Roma and LFC video last year, but that was a blip. Your stuff this year has been top drawer. It's a weird combination of factors, you've noted. Pep overthinks, but he also under estimates his opponents capabilities. A key thing City don't really have as a result of being mega oil money, are jack of all trades type players. They seem to be specialists in every position. LFC, for example, have a number of "Jack the lads" who swap roles often. Hence, they have no real problems making tactical adaptions in big matches. Keita, Henderson, Milner, can all play defensive roles in midfield. In Milners case he can go to the back. Matip, if push comes to shove can play in that pocket. Up front Firmino, Salah, and Mane drop back and both become attacking mids. Which was where they developed as footballers, they were'nt out and out strikers.

If it is just a matter of getting goals when the game is going well, it is okay to double down on Plan A. At Anfield, City tried to buttress the defense with Rodri and Gundogan both offering cover. It just did not work well because neither have good defensive instincts, which contributed to two of the goals. Even if this is not quite Plan A, the mindset and skillset of the players are still Plan A. Different formations/tactical take practice. In contrast, Liverpool has been steadily building up their skillset here over the last 14 months, and it is starting to pay big dividends.

Such a nice Vid, thanks to KZbin for showing me this. I think he really tries too many new tactical things in big games, which would be very very effective against the opponent if his players really understand the tactic. But it‘s not the players fault if they rarely play these tactical pieces of Guardiola... Sorry for my bad english btw ;)

Also thought it was odd in 2012 for the second leg vs Chelsea when he lined up with a 3-3-4 for Barcelona. This was probably in response to how deep Chelsea played in the first leg, but this just invited Chelsea to sit even deeper, as well as leaving a gaping hole at the back for Ramires to run through

It would be interesting to see if he had the same approach with barca when he was in charge. Did he make drastic changes like he has done at Munich and city?
@DrHannibal11055 жыл бұрын
Didn't need to. Guardiola's Barca worked on extremely fluid passing with exceptional harmony in the middle of the park and a player called Lionel messi that augmented that superb Midfield of xavi-iniesta-busquets all in their prime. But there itself is where this 'reactive' approach came from IMO, First it was mourinho's inter that i think were the first team to effectively shut down barca then mourinho was once again first to deny him a league title when his Real Madrid beat them by 9 points in 2011-12 (that famous chelsea victory against barca came in the same season.) A sabbatical later he came to bayern and looked as invincible as ever till carlo ancelotti came around with his ruthless Real Madrid and destroyed them 0-4 in their own backyard. All of those teams had found way to resist his fluid passing game and hit his teams on counter effectively.

Most people here started watching barcelona when pep took over..before pep, barca won 1 CL in 13 years, 1 laliga in 8 yrs...Laliga was all about real madrid. Had pep not come to barca, the best barca team wont have been born. Rijkaard's team relied heavily on Ronaldinho. Players like Messi would still be in the shadows. Rijkaard didnt have too much faith on Xavi and thats why he bought CL winner, Deco to play that role. Xavi was reported to leave barcelona. Rijkaard also bought CL finalist in Guily and that meant iniesta would continue to be a wonder kid. Had pep not taken over, Messi, Xavi and iniesta would just be anyother squad player. Remember, Ronaldinho was 27 years, Deco was 26 and Guily was 26 when pep got rid of them. Players like Busquet,Pedro,thiago WILL NEVER had made it big cuz they were all reserve players..Pique definitely would never be regarded. Pep basically used his Team B players to win the league and built his game around messi.

I've got an impression that the players on the pitch are main factor in play-off games and tournaments, while when it comes to winning leagues, the coaches are the ones winning by determining a strategy and building a consistency of a team around it. In Champions League knock-out stage you have not enough of a time to rebuild the players' on-pitch decisioning process, so the teams that play a more fluid type of football are usually winning. It always comes to the player's instinct. In Champions League and World Cup tournaments it's better to make tactics around your players' football instinct than persuade them to re-think an entire concept of playing football in a certain team.

Worth noting that against Barcelona in 2015, players like Franck Ribéry, Holger Badstuber (decent left-sided defender) and David Alaba were also missing in addition to Robben. Bayern had no particular players that could combine on the flanks. One thing Guardiola could have done was shift Lahm and Rafinha to full-back, use Bernat and Müller as makeshift wingers to block the wide areas and play a holding trio of Schweinsteiger, Alonso and Thiago to just see the game through, considering that it was an away leg.

It's happening. It's happening again. Pep started Sterling (who's had a terrible run of form recently) and without a CDM (Ferna or Rodri). He saved his overthinking for THE CL Final ffs. The team isn't clicking at all. But it's still half time, hopefully City get this back.
