As scouting becomes more important for elite level clubs to find the next wonderkid, how is data actually used in the process?
From Aussie Rules to Premier League analyst at Chelsea, Dan Pelchen is the founder of Traits Insights - a company with a big focus on individual player data.
A special edition of the Tifo Football Podcast sees JJ Bull and Joe Devine sitting down with Dan to discuss how he is translating complex sports analytics into meaningful player insights.

Would love more of this style of podcast. I would love to see in the details of coaching as well, like how would managers choose a system/formation and what are the key criteria of doing so. How would these systems changes the players/training sessions.

Please bring in financial person too. On how they managed transfer budgets, when should they expect to receive the broadcasting money, would the player be categorised as fixed assets, would they depreciate/ amortize the players based on their contract period, the club sources of revenue, players salary & bonus, how they manage salary cap, is there any other investment made by the club that is not related to football, which body would supervise club's financial/ to who the club need to present their financial reports is it only to UEFA or IRB too & etc..

I like the fact that Dan has gone to great lengths to explain why data and stats are just useless, if not used in tandem with other variables and other modeling cues such as weighting and regression. This legendary quote immediately comes to mind; "Stats are like a bikini, they don't reveal everything" -Steve Kompela

I love all the TIFO podcasts in general and this subject is fantastic - the only issue I have with interviewing data-led professionals is they are always safeguarding their information / always feel like they are not letting us fully "in". Which is fair because of their job, but it doesn't make for an ideal podcast guest, as I don't feel like I fully know what they do, there are no examples of players they have helped pluck from obscurity or any concrete examples of any of their work. At the end of the podcast, I don't feel like I've learnt a lot more than I previously knew because of this. Again, I did enjoy the podcast I just felt like so much was held back and I wish the stats side of the game was a bit more open, to create a better conversation.

Great stuff. Cheers to Dr. Dan for coming in and explaining his professional work. This one takes me back to the old office, books holding up mics/cameras, and Steve Morrison explaining why the person yelling at him for not pressing is literally countering everything his manager drilled him not to do all week for that match. Seb speaking with Clyde...hell, even how we were all introduced to JJ initially. These are true boat-times people. Drink it in. Thanks, Tifo.

So as I understand regarding the clustering point, and quantifying abilities using different metrics per position etc. Might an example be, in dribbling, for a number 6 them dribbling all the time and long distance carries etc might not be that useful given that would mean being out of position often. So instead of using metrics such as distance carried, successful dribbles, and progressive dribbles, they might instead use successful dribble percentage, dribbles under pressure, dribbles away from pressure, ball retention etc. Whereas for an 8 in a mezzala role, or wide playmaker, they might instead determine their dribbling rating based on progressive dribbles, entries into the box, xthreat created via dribbles etc? If so that makes a lot of sense. I think we all try to use some of this sense anyway just naturally. Like if a CB has quite progressive passing, but he also has many unsuccessful long and short passes, within a pretty good ball playing environment, it might not we worth that tradeoff. This was a great podcast.

The question I would have liked to know is did Dan prove out his model to the Chelsea higher-ups by using historical data. For example, did he go back to the 2014/2015 data and show that, yeah, that kid at Caen called NGolo Kante that nobody's heard of is actually the best DM in the world? If they had spoken about some players, other than Haaland, that his model would have identified if used 5 or 10 years ago, I think that would have made it more compelling. Thanks!

It seems a lot of data is about individual players, it would be interesting to get data about how players play together in partnerships and how that makes a difference to the data.
