I just started my first college class for tig welding and this is right on time, thanks Jody :) P.S. My instructor uses your videos as instruction almost every day before we go in the shop because your video work is better than the miller or Lincoln videos because you can clearly see the puddle and the entire welding process is clear. Thanks for the work you put in it has helped me with my other classes before tig.

Another great video Jody. I know one of the obstacles I battled with when I started out was the puddle dancing around. The two factors that corrected the problem were keeping the filler in the argon and wire brushing the joints before every run. I also clip off the end of the filler a lot of times to make sure I’m not starting off with oxides in the mix.

Good info. I have a Miller Syncrowave 180 SD I bought about 10 years ago. Haven't used it other than for occasional SMAW steel hobby stuff. However, I've started some pretty big remodeling projects around the house and am making a dining room table with a pedestal stand made out of steel. The vertical tube is 4.5" OD, 11 GA. The table support and legs I am using are 1" x 3" rectangular tube, 0.08" thick. The table support and legs butt into the OD of the center tube. I ground them best I could to match the radius of the tube. I was doing some practice welds on a small piece of the tubing and support/legs scrap, and discovered I'm really out of tune. I started blasting a lot of holes in the thinner supports/legs. However, after a bit of practice, I'm getting decent welds, provided I focus the arc more on the thicker tube. My electrode is 3/32". My filler metal is 3/32". My amperage setting is around 130A max. I'm thinking I should drop down to 1/16" filler so I don't have to use so much heat. Suggestions to improve my weld? The thinner supports/legs were chosen because 11GA for those pieces would make this table a beast (weight). Chiller bars would be tough to set up due to the design and material availability.

Jody, something clicked inside my brain during this video... Usually my puddle looks squirrely like when you were welding the back side of the tee joint and turns out gray and scaley.. Recently I found out that the square tubing I buy is actually hot rolled even though it looks like cold rolled (see any of my videos). I'm going to try grinding the inside of the tubing with a tootsie roll. Thanks Jody. Love the videos and online store.

How did you find that out? I've been getting 1/16" wall square tubing that looks cold rolled but certain times acts like it's hot rolled too. It's basically scrap price so I don't mind but have always wondered why it's so quick to gray out and sometimes get scaley.

Hello Jody, I haven't seen anyone address plasma cutters insofar as whether a drag tip can be converted to standoff and visa versa. Where to get the consumables if they do change. Whether only some machines can and others not? Tricks in making jigs for both kinds. Whether a machine can only run the tip hole diameter it comes with or if you can vary it for different projects? Which Chinese brands are proving out for the diy'ers? Seems a vacuum of info on plasma options. I have been running a 40 amp machine for more than fifteen years and just found tips to convert it to drag. It would seem drag style does go through more tips? Thanks for all the great videos. Take care. Doug

309 or 312 with some pre and post heating and slow cooling to prevent cracking. If it is free machining 416 (416Se) it is considered not weldable. Really better off not doing it, but it can be done in a pinch.

Damn I have to get into some tig. My collage funds dont really let. Do you think a simple bridge rectifier will do the job on an old ac machine? Oh and is around 160A enough for some basic stuff?
@caseyledford36626 жыл бұрын
There are some really cheap machines out there with stable dc arc for tig. Many with high frequency start rather than having to scratch start. By the time you get the machine, build or buy a rectifier, and get a bottle of argon, assuming you dont already have one, it would be best to get a tig designated machine in today's market. Some brands are htp, everlast, ck...
@zanpekosak23836 жыл бұрын
@@caseyledford3662 Yeah but those brands are firstly foreign for me (voltages wouldnt work and import taxes and customs are through the roof) and if I could get my hands on one the prices are way to much. The cheapest tig capable welder (HF start) is around 340$ and can run up to 200A. Its a stick machine but I could buy a cheap torch kit on ebay just to get my feet wet and see if I like it and than maybe buy a torch. The cheapest one I could get around me is 460$ plus around 100$ for the TIG to DINSE adpater. The bottle isnt a problem. I can get it from a local fire brigade where I have some conections.
@caseyledford36626 жыл бұрын
@@zanpekosak2383 By all means go get it. I can tell you that even the lowest price dc machines put out very close to the stable arc that high end machines because the concept and technology is pretty much basic across the board. Features of high end Lincoln, Miller, etc machines are only slightly better when it comes to dcen welds. A scratch start rig will prove its limits even to a small hobbyist in a relatively short time. Not to mention these new basic dc hf machines hold their value pretty well in case you lose interest. Whatever you decide, enjoy yourself. Im going to go weld something.

Seems like a clear cup is always better for visibility of the puddle. Is that not true? Do they not provide the equivalent gas envelope as a ceramic cup? Noob welder here.
@jerrysgardentractorsengine22436 жыл бұрын
mdwdirect the clear cup provides better visibility for filming as it “lights the way”. Large diameter gas lenses (like the clear furick cup used in the video) provide a larger gas envelope compared to a standard pink ceramic cup. Gas lens kits have plenty of advantages such as longer stick out, but they require more gas flow compared to a standard cup
