I rode my 2007 Sprint 1050 this morning and the clutch was sticking, I really struggled to get it out of first and this lead me to start googling and find your video. I may summon up the courage and try this myself but I'm not the most mechanically minded... Thanks for the video!

no problem.. it is not too hard, just take you time and you should be fine.

Looks like the steel plates are in backwards. You want the sharp side of the splines inward so the spring pressure will push them back in. If they're in the other way, when you pull the clutch in the plates will get hung up and not separate to allow oil in between.

Kary, I so wish I knew something about it. Interesting vid! I hope you get it resolved!
@DillysADV13 жыл бұрын
@britex3186 Thanks, really it was fun to tear into and see really how well it is made.. it was done well.. it appears that it is resolved and that the problem may have been lack of proper maintenance from the previous owner and proper adjusting...
@DillysADV13 жыл бұрын
@navythomas8 it seems to be working perfect now... I do not believe that there was really a "factory defect" more that they are not being adjusted correctly and the oil was past due being changed.. now all we need is some really good weather and a TON of really good miles!

Thanks for this vid, gotta do mine soon, one thing i noticed when my tiger does this, after a really long run say 40miles + gearing is faultless. I do a lot of short runs and the oil gets crapped up thanks to condensation.

This is a way of soaking the plates without a strip-down, I have used this technique successfully a few times over the years to cure sticky or grabby motorcycle clutches without a strip-down. It's not something I'm aware of anyone else doing - it's my own method. You need to buy a gallon of any old cheapo oil and a gallon of your normal replacement oil. 1) Fill your engine with the cheapo oil until it is at the brim of the oil filler - DO NOT TURN OVER OR START YOUR ENGINE, YOU WILL DESTROY IT. 2) Take up all the slack of your clutch cable using the adjuster at the lever (count the turns so you can put it back) actuate the clutch lever 20 or 30 times 3) Cable tie the lever in, leave it 24 hours. 4) Cut the cable tie and actuate the clutch another 20-30 times 5) Cable tie the lever in again, leave it like that as long a possible. When it's time to revive the bike again 1) Drain the oil (you will probably need TWO catch bowls!) 2) Refill your engine oil with your favourite brand to the normal level. 3) Cut the cable tie on the lever 4) Put the cable adjuster back where it was. This has worked every time for me.

That is an interesting idea, the only real down side I see would be that you cannot separate the plates well that way but the concept is solid. I have only had to really do this one time and then just running it regularly to keep things moving. Thanks for watching and commenting!

@sgtmarkins yea, the sad thing on this is it had not been maintained and there was only 5k on the od... I think they actually missed the break in oil change from the look of it.
@DillysADV13 жыл бұрын
@wookidoooo I have never seen this problem before this bike. of coarse my bikes don't sit either. I did have to leave them in the oil for some time and clean them to get it working smooth.
@DillysADV13 жыл бұрын
@Zer0kbps I believe that I am having the same problem.. it really is not a good city driver.. it really like the open highway... I have thought about getting a smaller bike for around town but.. still in the thinking stage.

I don't tear into that often but I will have to look at that next time. It has been working a lot better since I did this, so it must have fixed at least most of it.. Thanks for the info.

Please explain how to hook the clutch lever arm to the pull-thingy when putting the cover back on. I am stumped!!! Please help!
@DillysADV6 жыл бұрын
surprisingly you are the first to ask that, it is a bit of an art but simply, it uses a cam similar to how you would use a claw hook on a hammer. you want to turn the lever portion as far "Open" as you can, slide the cover on and rotate it unit you can feel it "hook" on. it is very possible that it may take a few tries to get it but it is do-able.

@L0udP1p35 I ended up using the Mobil1 oil that I put in the bike... I kinda wonder if they might have put the wrong oil in it.. dunno...

Thanks for the video. I am toying with buying tiger 1050 but if it doesn’t have a slipper clutch fitting one. Is this as straightforward as it seems?
@DillysADV2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, they are pretty easy to work on, everything I have done on this bike uses minimal tools..

Hey Dillys ADV, good info on the video. I noticed at the end of your video when you put the bike in gear it was totally silent, I didn't even think you had put it in gear mine makes a loud "CLANK" and kinda lurches forward. My bike has about 35,000 miles, I guess its about time for friction plates, but what else do you think that could be? Thanks.
@DillysADV8 жыл бұрын
+Chris H it is very possible it just needs this service (Soak the plates in oil for a day) pull it apart and inspect them.. I just had to do mine again.. In the next couple of weeks I will be posting another vid on this with the torque and inspection specs.

not yet but asked a bike shop owner, He want to do a total clutch job, Springs, fraction plates, and plates.

This is worth a try unless you know that the clutch is at the end of it's life.. I would not replace everything until after trying this.

Did you replace all the gaskets or were you able to reuse the factory gaskets.
@DillysADV10 жыл бұрын
burbanbogger I was able to reuse them but I always use a thin film of RTV sealant just to make sure.. no leaks since. Just be careful when removing. rides like a top now as well.

Howdy. I have an 2006 Sprint (same motor) and I am considering replacement of my clutch cover due to a minor drop and scratches. How difficult was removal and refitting of the clutch cover and gaskets? The starter gear portion of this makes me nervous!

So what did you clean the plates with?
@deborahchesser73756 жыл бұрын
I did one of those, there’s like 4 different plates and you better have them in order, fun shit LOL
@navythomas813 жыл бұрын
Hmmm.... If it happens in the forums I am assuming the factory doesn't have a fix for it yet. Sounds familiar! The KLR has known defects, That are cured with afterMarket fixes. I hate that you are having to go thru this crap. I knew the known issues with the KLR so I had already planned to fix them all! Hope it works for ya ! Tom

the gear that will only turn one way has what is called a pall behind it technically the same as a rachet one way it tightens and the other freewheel or to put it push bike rear gear wheel

I was told to use a semi synthetic as opposed to full synthetic oil. triumph mechanic said use Castrol 10-40 semi synthetic. I used Amsoil 20-50 in my Ultra. next time I will use Amsoil just to see what happens.

+John R I have always liked mobile1 so I have stayed with that.. but riding the bike regularly makes a huge difference.. when I did this 4 years ago, it worked fine until I let the bike sit again during a life change.
@maxxbenzz78429 жыл бұрын
yes you are spot on. I failed to mention that. he told me to run at least once a week. like an old Mercedes. if u drive it ever day it will last till the sun burns out. if u let it sit every seal and grommet will fail. lol. cheers and thanks. I live in cold climate but I can bundle up good! just a side note. I replaced the tranny fluid in my 05 Lincoln Aviator. it cost me like 400 bucks but im not kidding, it shifted like it was brand new. I was shocked. I'm sold on Amsoil so next oil change ill do it. Mobil 1 in my 05 Audi cuz my car mechanic refuses to sell anything else. doesn't burn a drop. 160k miles. A6 3.2 I go 7k between changes. on my bike obviously once a year.
@Booki897 жыл бұрын
Hey DillysADV did soaking your plates fix the issue? I have tried soaking the plates on my friends speed triple, but the clunk into first gear is really harsh. Also you cannot push the bike while its in gear with the clutch lever pulled in...are you able to push your bike in gear with the clutch lever pulled in?
@DillysADV7 жыл бұрын
Yes, this did solve the issue, I can push it easily with the lever pulled while in gear. This problem typically occurs when the bike is parked on a side stand and not started for long amounts of time. I soaked mine for a few days.. make sure when soaking them that they are separated so that oil can get between them. The only other thing that may be an issue is to make sure the clutch cable is adjusted properly.. You will want it so that as soon as you pull the lever, you are pulling on the clutch to get the right amount of movement.
@deborahchesser73756 жыл бұрын
Also, too much oil makes the clutch drag. If that’s a cable clutch check the free play , you have to have free play, unless it’s hyd , in that case there’s no adj.
@chezzylee10 жыл бұрын
I think contaminated plates followed by lots of heat has caused them to stick
@DillysADV10 жыл бұрын
chezzylee that is something I heard a lot but in this case, I could break it loose and it would run fine and then the next morning they were stuck again.. letting them soak and cleaning the area out a lot worked well and it still working to this day.

True, I believe we all experience times when we do not ride our bikes as much as we should. It is sad but it happens.. In my case, it was the previous owner that had not ridden it in a while.. but I must admit, it does not get ridden as much now either.. Life just gets in the way sometimes. Thanks for the comment..

The one way gear for the starter is not a pawl, it is an overrunning gear or a tapered roller gear. When turned one way the taper on one race forces a bearing against the outer race and the friction results in the inner and outer races turning together. When turned the other way, the bearing drops down the taper and causes the inner and outer race to separate.On the clutch, the drive and driven plates do stick together when coated in oil and do become hard to separate. When oil is on the plates and the plates come together, all the air is removed from between them and a vacuum occurs. Since the air can't readily get back into the space between the plates, the two plates appear to stick together. This is a normal occurrence.Most clutch drag issues are from poor or improper oil or extended times between use, also poor cable and or clutch release adjustment.
@jmguzzirider86218 жыл бұрын
use motul oil 300 10 w 40
@DillysADV8 жыл бұрын
The problem with Motul, is 1- it is just not as readily available. It would be fine for a weekend warrior but I ride/rode daily and did not have time to wait for it to be shipped if I needed it and 2- Triumph recommends Mobil1.. The reality of it is that the only time a bike like this is stored for abnormal amounts of time (Not just winter storage) and was left on the side stand instead of the center stand.
