The Mysterious Starling It’s eyes work properly alright, they just can’t perceive things clearly whatsoever while running that fast so they have to take quick pauses to process their new location before inching a bit more.

Sunny Its more along the lines of its brain not being able to interpret visual information. Its eyes still receive visual cues, but by the time its brain interprets that information, its already past the location at where it received those cues.

I looked it up; it would run at about 1400 mph (almost twice the speed of sound.) Meaning, if it were to run past you, you would not hear the sound of its footsteps until a couple of seconds after it passed you.

Disregard; my calculations were incorrect. I was reading about a species of mite that runs that fast. The article said that the fastest species of tiger beetle runs at 171 body lengths per second. Assuming an average human body length of 6 feet, if it were the size of a human, it would be able to run at about 720 miles per hour, which is 43 miles per hour below the speed of sound. So, it would not break the sound barrier, but it would still be running at an incredibly fast speed.

The Australian tiger beetle was the worlds fastest creature. But the South Californian mite has taken the title. Although we don't know huge amounts about this mite, we do however know it's speed. Researchers used 'BPS' (Body lengths per second) to measure how fast it could run. A Cheetah can run at about 60mph, which is 16 body lengths per second. The mite at about the size of a sesame seed, can run at 322 body lengths per second, which is the equivalent of us running at (believe it or not) roughly 1,300mph. Talk about incredible natural engineering :).
