Damn. I wish I could get employees to do preventive maintenance at the end of shift. Looks to me like a proud owner/operator!

I hear you there, nothing like seeing an employee already 2 miles towards town before his half a million dollar or better machine stops turning over! But with that said, I am an employee. I have been on the sharp end of payments as a successful logging company owner, and I could be again I suppose if I wanted. But I am very happy to be where I am and am well appreciated too. I would rather work for a company whose owners I admire and respect because I have to say that I feel that there are too many of us, loggers, today and it works painfully to our disadvantage because there is always someone willing to log it for nothing, or worse yet not know that they are logging it for nothing. The bean counters setting the rates are acutely aware of that fact. I recognize that fiber has to remain competitive on the world market but I feel that the downward pressure on rates is unreasonable and is having a serious impact on the field, particularly in terms of attracting outstanding young people into the profession. OK! That's my rant, thanks again for the comment and the interest, we appreciate it!

That’s a thorough and timely service to do everyday, I’ve been exclusive to the 870 since 2004 if a guys careful and everything goes as planned I can grease that bad boy in about 20 min and wash the windows before the fuel stops running. I inspect every line front to back every Friday and that’s also when I clean the rad screens. I like to keep my air filter tapped out every second day or so also. Have you ever rotated your teeth rather then changing the whole set or half a set at once? I like to change 4 at a time on this head and promptly after the edge comes off the last 4 (turned/changed) teeth. They last much longer and your saws 100% 100% of the time. I liked changing 3 at a time on the old head but with the new saw having 20 teeth it’s either 2/4/5/10/20 at a time. So 4 it is. 🍻

Hey, thanks for the comment. Sounds like you have a great program going on too. I agree with you 100% about taking care of the machine, it is the way to go. I like working on it on my schedule so I can cut when I plan to. I appreciate that you check your hoses too, I do that as I'm greasing. It's funny, I really enjoy catching hoses when they are weeping, rather than having a blowout. Or catching anything for that matter, when I've got time and tools out already. Nothing better than getting to the machine, loading her up, firing her up and cutting hard all day without an issue! So, I'm interested in what you are saying about how you rotate teeth. Am I understanding you right that you rotate 4 teeth when the set has lost a little bit of its edge? Im assuming that the ones you change are equally spaced on the disc? And then when you notice a loss you do another 4? Let me know if I'm tracking right on this. I'm always up for new ideas and I've never thought or heard of this idea which sounds like it's working well for you. How many 870's have you had since '04? What part of the world are you cutting in? Thanks again for the comment, I look forward to hearing back from you with some more details on that if you have a minute. Good cuttin to ya!

Whats in the purple jugs Adblue ?
@thedailylogger2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's right it's DEF. The Buncher uses 5 to seven a day as an average so I'm hauling 6 jugs. I work out of town a lot and I cant always count on the fuel dumps having bulk tanks. Generally I can cut a week on the 30 gallons but not always if I'm getting good production. My best single day so far I got 4400 trees, burned 115 gallons of fuel and 11 gallons of DEF. I wish I was in wood and ground like that all the time! Got to love the Scribner jugs, I think they are the best. I rigged one cap up with a nipple and a section of Def compatible hose with spiral hose spring to keep it from kinking. Stuck a long stainless steel nipple in the other end that takes a nylon threaded cap and it works great for filling the reservoir. I keep the tank full, the DEF clean and change the filter religiously and knock on wood I haven't had a bit of trouble with the system. 6800 hours and counting. The exhaust smells like hot air! Thanks for the question and for watching, be safe!

how many tubes of grease do you use a day?

He didn't grease the saw bearing under the saw head
@thedailylogger3 жыл бұрын
I had to watch it again to see if we showed it. We didn't show me actually greasing every zerk because it would be too long. The saw bearing is there, just before I beat on the chunk stuck in the accumulator. I get that with a hand grease gun, they don't want you to use a power gun on it because of the seals. It gets daily grease and then fill the cavity and hit the spindle too every 175 hrs. Thanks for keeping me on my toes.
@macdehlinger37273 жыл бұрын
Do you literally grease everything everyday? I run a LX830D with 26".. Why do you hand pump the head bearings? Just asking for the education.. You clearly take a lot of pride in your machine🍻
@thedailylogger3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, everyday. This video is a condensed version of what I do every night. It generally takes about 90 minutes if I don't run across something unusual. Sometimes it's a little hard to get excited by it, like when it's dark, cold and raining/snowing sideways. That's part of the reason I want a good truck and have it set up skookum, it makes it as easy and pleasant as it can be. Almost fun! Two other things, one, I'm already kinda dirty, tired and sometimes grumpy. So working my way around the machine and cleaning and greasing and looking for problems isnt going to change my disposition one way or the other. The second is that in the morning when I get to the Buncher I want to be able to unlock it, fire it up, load it up and get to cutting, preferably without having to put my coffee cup down. So taking care of everything at night sets me up to be good to go in the morning. I find that maintenance is a chore but it is so much easier and more convenient than having a preventable breakdown. Probably more of an answer than what you wanted, but there you go! Tigercat specifies greasing the saw bearings, the swing motor bearings and the rotary manifold bearings by hand because you can blow the seals out with a power gun. In talking with Tigercat people at shows and at the factory it seems like they would advocate greasing everything by hand but that's not going to happen for me! I just did a 175 hr grease last night on the saw bearings and spindle, that's kind of a chore, it's generally 2-1/2 tubes or so, a lot of pumps. Thanks for the comment and questions, we appreciate them and your watching. I have run an 830, sometimes miss the extra tilt and that little bit more reach. Best of luck to you out there, Be safe!

@@thedailylogger I very much appreciated your response!! I typically put 2 tubes a day between the upper and lower bearings. Both with a 20v Lincoln. How I have i not messed anything up if im doing it wrong? I'd love to pick your brain about lots of things pertaining to daily maint, etc. Having everything done the night before, showing up and cranking the key is a great feeling! My Webasto recently quit😔
@thedailylogger3 жыл бұрын
@@macdehlinger3727 You are probably ok, I think the real concern is for extreme cold weather, Tigercat puts a lot of machines into arctic conditions. The bearings have the two relief ports on the other side of the head that will purge when the cavity is full. I did ask a Tigercat engineer about that because I could never get grease to come out of the second port after the first purged. He said they are redundant, so if one got plugged there would be a fallback to relieve the pressure. Are you getting grease at the reliefs? What the book asks for is 1 shot in each fitting for every hour you operate every day. I did that for about the first year and then started giving them 3 shots for every hour, every day. Seemed as though putting that much would keep the cavity fuller. I was hoping it would take less grease at the 175 hr service but it didn't change. I do this when the head is hot too, at the end of the day so the seal will be flexible. Then they ask for greasing the fittings until the relief purges every 175 hrs, and giving the disc drive spindle (behind the 3/8" Allen plug on the bottom of the disc) 8 shots at the same interval too. That long reach LocknLube coupler works awesome for that recessed fitting. Did your Webasto throw a code after it quit? It could be something simple. I've got a code sheet, if you tell me what it's reading I could check for you if you want. Those are great, to have the systems warm (and the heater blowing hot air) when you turn the key is pretty sweet, and good for the Hydraulics too. Good talking with you.
