Right) HAha But all these secrets in the plugins BOX
@JuancoPRoFlow6 жыл бұрын
Exactly, that's where the secret is. You have to think as the drum as one instrument. You manipulate the kick sounds to give the snare a fatter sound or whatever sound you are going after.

@jaedii72876 жыл бұрын
Why would you compress a snare? For distortion?
@catzilla62796 жыл бұрын
To make the hit louder or to make the tail the same volume as the hit.
@jessegrisham6 жыл бұрын
You might want more or less decay on the snare. More or less attack on the snare. Or you may want a slight leveling. Those are just a few reasons.
@kronk3584 жыл бұрын
The right compressor will mimic high volume.It can make it sound like it was played loud even when listening at low volumes. la76 is great for it
@gottibeats31563 жыл бұрын

If you have to spend a long time getting your kicks and snares to sound right you're using the wrong kicks and snares. Use sounds that sound right from the off, not sounds that you have to spend an hour f**king about with.

it’s a different proposition when you’re recording a live band
@mts26394 жыл бұрын
It's not the case with live drums. The mixing engineer has to work with what he gets (and he's always not the recording engineer), and he cannot altogether reprogram a kick he prefers. Plus, you have to work on all your sounds according to the mix and how it's shaping out to be.
@ectyka4 жыл бұрын
If he was the recording engineer/producer, yeah, but if it was a session sent to you to mix, then it’s out of your hands, and you have to work with what you have. It’s all part of engineering.
@tun3tym3 Жыл бұрын
And on the live spectrum we have to deal with fly dates and backline companies providing kits. Sometimes it’s pretty good and other times .. not so much. But sure .. in theory start with a great sounding kit and a drummer that can tune drums.

@EpithetMusicTV4 жыл бұрын
he said at the beginning he wasn’t going to recreate the final mix. so the song was already done long before this video but he was just using examples of what could be done when mixing kicks and snares for the purposes of this video.

All this is highly dependent on DAC quality, monitor quality and room acoustics. You can use only stock plugins to make professional mixes if you hear exactly what is happening.

@mathiassaaf79186 жыл бұрын
Mixing is all about balance. If you cannot hear you're snare you probably don't have the right balance ;)

Mathias Sääf I've just found that it doesn't cut through on speakers without compression on heavier songs. Like it'll be audible on earphones but inaudible on proper speakers - even when the snares really loud. I'm not formally taught though, I've just guessed my way through the process so I know very little haha
@busyboxst76 жыл бұрын
Context is key. I'm not sure if Katis works on metal for example. But I'd also say the tuning of the snare and it's own actual dynamic envelope and how the mic captures it can have a huge effect on whether a snare needs compression. Some mic positions tend to yield only a slap with very little sustain (thus needing a compressor sooner) - just an example. It's also likely that he's getting what he wants of the snare sustain from the overheads and rooms. That's something that happens a lot easier in better sounding rooms than in home recording, in my experience with both anyway, and with more and more appropriate mic choices (to the song) over time.
@noir46596 жыл бұрын
I think your problem is you need to first have a reference track. Assuming you have it, you need at least 3 different systems (the number is from my mixing professor's experience and I just kinda adapted to it, it can differ for people) for monitoring to compare your mix to the reference, I usually use two sets of speakers and a pair of headphones. Although yes adding compression especially a slow-attack one on snare makes the transient pop out A LOT, but that comes after the important thing, which is level balance. Once you get the overall levels balanced and matching your reference on all 3 systems, it'd be pretty easy for your mix to translate anywhere.
