That truck is not $14.58 per hour. It's $16.25 including interest. But we are not done... assuming city driving at an average of 35mph and driving 70 miles per day... that's 10 gallons per day for a cost of $40 per day.. or $5.00 per hour. We aren't done... property and license tax is let's say $2400 per year or $1.25 per hour. We are still not done... you have to insure that bad boy.. let's say another $2400 per year or $1.25 per working hour. Hold on.. that truck doesn't its self... you need an employee to drive it those 2 hours per day. That $25 per hour guy really costs you $40 per hour after factoring in taxes, insurance, etc.. so you got $80 per day for driving that truck... that's $10.00 per hour.... your grand total expense for each working hour is $33.75. More than double your stated cost. Every work day that truck costs your company $270. I'm not saying the truck isn't worth it. I'm saying it costs more than your telling people.

At the end of the 5 years though, taking depreciation into consideration, the company owns a truck still worth about $100k outright, which becomes liquid as soon as he sells it, so a good portion of the "$16.25/hour" isn't lost money and he will see again.
@CuriosityChronicled3 жыл бұрын
@@andrewking8261 it will be worth 50 or 60k in 5 years. My neighbor buys 3 or 4 of these a year. Granted he pays around 115k for them vs 140. But they do not hold value well.

@@TigranGertzThey are good trucks and will make you money. Stay ontop of the maintenance and get an OTR reset tool for it. KW's are known for DEF and regen issues. If it won't regen you plug the box into it and it will save you $400 plus towing. Force it to regen about once a week to keep the filter clear. Once those filters go bad they're $10,000-$15,000 to replace.

Your math is a little screwy. When you add the maintenance costs, hiring a CDL driver, fuel, insurance, etc. the daily cost will skyrocket. However, the use you'll get out of this truck with the amount of work you do, equipment always ends up paying for itself fairly quickly & puts money in the bank. Everytime I pay a repair bill for an outdated piece of equipment, I kick myself for not having just sold it to buy new. Used equipment over 5 or 6 years old seems to always be more trouble than it's worth.

$14.58 / hr is a deal IF the truck is used 8 hrs / day. Used 25% of the time the cost is $58.32 / hr. 10% of the time it's $145.80 / hr. Does it run on air or fuel? 46 mph / 7 mpg = 6 gals / hr * $4 = $24 / hr operating cost. Maintenance is about $1000/mo if run 8 hrs/day so that's $6.25 /hr. Dump truck insurance average is $438/mo so $2.74/hr. I don't know what registration fees are, but assume little. Actual cost per hour for the $14.58 dump truck adjusted for reality is... $47.57 / hr if used all day every workday. Of course the truck would still have value at the end of 5 years. But if you're using 5 years as the life. Insurance in particular cost increases per hour the less use the truck gets. Most everything else is mileage dependent.

You need to make sure you warm the diesel up before use but more importantly let it cool down after use, when you drive that thing around hot ass CA all day in bumper to bumper traffic the turbo will be HOT AF. When you arrive on site make sure to lock the truck up and let it run for 15 minutes to bring the turbo and other components back down to a optimal temperatures. When you just pull up and shut the truck off the shaft inside the turbo is so hot it burns the oil on it off and just sits in their hot as hell with no oil on which can warp it. Leaving the truck running allows oil to remain on everything and after cool down the oil wont just flash burn off.

I met a guy from Maine and he told me a great truck driver story about going to the DMV when he was in his 60s and being a small town and all the local police guy was always there and everyone knew everyone and the police guy was like "hey, Bob what are you doing here?" and as the driver telling me his story which I found wholly believable he said "well, Jim after near 40 years plus of truck driving I decided to finally get my driver's license!" The whole place apparently went silent. Anyhow point being if you're *NOT* breaking the Law in the trucking business you are in fact doing something wrong. Anyhow to all of the naysayers never forget *DEPRECIATION* is always on your side in this line of work...so the more that truck gets used and they can be used for just about anything the more valuable the vehicle becomes unlike most automobiles ever made. In other words there's *ALWAYS* a cash value to a true to scale Commercial Truck as opposed to almost any pickup truck ever made ever if looked at from a strictly monetary point of view...so wrong to go into debt for? I would argue "absolutely no" with a modern day Kenworth being an excellent choice. In fact given how "stubby" this variant is I would go out on a limb and recommend doing some trailer shopping as well as the USA makes amazing trailers for such vehicles now as well which when it comes time to sell as is always the case in these things ("wow, I really can't afford that one tire this time!" moment) you can still hopefully have the trailer paid off by that point...and the trucks will only be getting better as new with even "old" trucks having awesome pulling and braking power as well...particularly of this Class B type.

Thats a very nice truck. I have a ford 9000 which is similar in size. If you have enough haul outs the truck is probably worth the expense. However, I took mine of the road because it wasn't cost effective for me. I actually should sell it. It has been sitting in front of my shop for 5 years now. In my market area, a truck that size only pays $60hr. For $90 you can have a permitted triaxle which will carry twice the payload. The engine in my single axle, similar to yours will drink almost as much fuel as a triaxle. For haul outs (if you have to dispose of spoil on a majority of your jobs) the truck is worth it. If your primary use is importing material to your jobs it is probably not cost effective because of the forementioned.

Commercial trucks are a hungry beast that has to be fed work and preventative maintenance constantly. The goal is no down-time paired with maintenance cost. Losing $120hr while also paying $120hr plus parts to a shop starts to add up quick and eat into your monthly/yearly average. It’s like having a crew of guys on payroll sitting around making no money and also stealing your tools. KW is the best out there but that motor is not what you think. Just don’t keep the truck past your emissions warranty expiration. And don’t let ANY contamination into that DEF tank. Not a grain of sand. Which reminds me, I’ve heard of a guy recently paying $6,500 for the DEF pickup mechanism on that tank off EBay. Because Covid got the parts world for trucks ALL screwed up.

The only thing I don’t like about the kenworth is the key location at the ignition switch. I bent my key getting in and out hitting it with my knee. I know they put it there for emergency responders to easily reach in and shut off the truck but I think I’d prefer an external power disconnect and the key in a better spot.

holly shit that's a short box. I assume you got this with the 26k GVW? but then added a trailer ball. Keep in mind if someone wants to tow something they will need a class A CDL. What is the curb weight of that truck? i can't imagine there is much load capacity left to haul much crushed stone.
@TigranGertz3 жыл бұрын
The box isn't that short
@Ramdodge5823 жыл бұрын
@@TigranGertz that depends I gues.... if they don't do chips or mulch then it's fine I guess. My little $8k dump trailer holds 10 yards, I doubt that's a 10 yard box.

You may be able to modify the tailgate to swing open to the right in addition to its current configuration. Then you can load pallets and trees when necessary.

Nice truck ! . What’s the truck weigh fully loaded? Pretty sure if you tow trailer with that thing loaded you’re going to need a CDL. Mine does
@TigranGertz3 жыл бұрын
it can hold 10 tons, so add that to the weight of the truck

@@TigranGertz you got a learn weights if you’re gonna play in DOT territory. You’re only allowed so much weight per axle when they pull you over with the portable scales. Last time I was overweight by 400 pounds they gave me a $1200 ticket.

Tigran extended the wood on the sides to hold more materials. Take out the piece of wood or attach another piece of wood on the side of the existing piece of wood on the outside to raise up the bed height for materials.

You also gottuh figure your daily fuel expenses, your daily general maintanence, any breakdowns that will have, the costs of your GVWR tags, plus you need at least $10-12 G's just in capital alone for things like engine repair, transmission & drivetrain repair. Theres the cost of hydraulic fluid for your hydraulic cylinder for your dump bed! Nice little Kenworth dump truck, but ya paid to much for the little guy. . . . .Way to much!!! I hope the thing is running a standard stransmission & not no gay assed automatic. Your "nitrous tank" is your DEF tank. Your "square tank" is your tool box. After your release the side hood latches on the fenders, you open the hood from the front just as the same way ya closed it. Use the Kenworth emblem as your hand hold. Use the step section of the front bumper to help you pull the hood open as well as to close it! Always do a daily pre-trip & post-trip inspections & write down any & all gripes the need to be fixed after a days work! Always keep an eye on your tires, wheels, & lug nuts---making sure that they stay tight & the properly torque rating. Always watch youre "blinde side"! i was born and raised in the truck8ng profession & drove the big rigs for 25+yrs in long haul otr, mid otr, local otr, local daily. . . . . .flatbeds, drop decks, heavy equipment lowboys, belly dumps, dump trucks, end dumps, tankers, vans, reefers. . . . .you name it!!! now retired due to a low back injury. Stay safe, DO NOT get in a big hurry, take your time, make good decisive judgment calls, enjoy but most of all. . . .TRUCK SAFE!!! 10-4!!!
