Interesting fact. Everyone talks about how the panzer 1 was originally meant to be a training tank, which I believed for the longest time. But then it was pointed out to me that, while the armor is thin, it is in fact made of actual hardened armor quality steel, and mounts actual guns instead of just sticks that look like guns. Granted none of those guns were armor piercing, but it wasn't yet considered a requirement that every single tank variant be able to fight other tanks (the early variant of the Vickers tank also mounted only MGs). The armor is just enough to stop 7.92mm steel core AP bullets at any range, meaning that is was clearly designed to withstand small arms fire. We even have documentation that the Germans had requested from their designers a tank to fill the roles of infantry support and recon, which resulted in the panzer 1. It was designed to fight, not just to be a training vehicle (although they were heavily involved the the development of German doctrine, and the Germans no doubt hoped to replace them with better tanks as soon as possible).

Didn't they actually fight in the Spanish civil war? To my knowledge they fought there against the Russian T-26 and saw that the T-26 heavily outclassed the Pz-1, because it had a 35 mm gun. That was the point when they realized that tanks need to be able to fight other tanks.

Nice Guy Eddie It's true. But the German Army was like all armies, limited by certain Philosophical beliefs and strategic considerations. Also their soldier's morale get truly affected if the Russians produced a better tank. So they had to upgrade their design. We Americans always relied on our economic power to win (rightly so because we can) so it was not very demoralising for our troops even when they had to fight in the inferior Sherman. The Russians had even lower expectations....they were losing 20:1 in terms of casualties at the start of the war, where quite happy when they brought it down to 10:1, and by the end of the war they were happy to lose 4 Russians for every German killed. Expectations dictated the Germans had to place their bets on a superior design, instead of the economic design. Furthermore, being a smaller country German always knew it could not compete with a mass production strategy so it relied on quality to overcome its quantitative disadvantage.

Impervious to rifle or machine gun fire, able to roll over barbed wire and carrying two machine guns. Developed between the wars, the design was based on earlier needs, it was a useful tool for training and development of the doctrine of mobile combined forces that worked so well in the early years of WW2

Fun fact During the entirety of WWII if you were to combine the entire numbers of Panzer IV's, Tiger 1's Panthers and Tiger II's Germany made those numbers would have STILL fallen way short of how many of only Sherman's America produced (45k+) now add all the Tank destoyers America made just the 50k T-34 Russia made AND last but not least all the tanks England made Germany never stood a chance

The panther only had serious mechanical troubles in the summer and fall of 1943 after the battle of Kursk the problems were addressed and when the 2Nd block started finding their way onto the battlefield they were more reliable but that first generation of panthers really had problems with the transmission overheating and the suspension was supposed to be easier to fix in the field but that wasn’t the case .

_I read that they were even less reliable than today's mercedes cars_ The Panther production was rushed in a haste to get them to the battlefield as quickly as possible, among other things, for the 1943 summer offensive. Teething problems were abundant, although they were corrected to a large degree by mid 1944. Final drive was still an issue, and required trained drivers that treated the machine with care.
@strellettes85117 жыл бұрын
More than likely not a break down, you see this commonly with armored fighting vehicles when they are being paraded they just stop moving and it is almost always simply due to an inexperienced driver. A recent example would be last years victory day parade in Russia I think, where the new t14 armada stopped in the middle of the Red Square and it was due to the driver being very new.

@idealumerov29355 жыл бұрын
