Tijuana VS San Diego | Pros/Cons & Tips

As an American living in Tijuana, i strongly recommend doing a life here just like a local, i do buy groceries in TJ in places like Soriana, El Florido, local Smart & Final and Walmart, i go to the movies at Cinepolis and Cinemex, visit the shopping malls like Plaza Galerias, Plaza Península, Paseo Chapultepec, Plaza Alameda, Macroplaza and visit the local parks such as Parque Morelos, also go to local coffee shops and restaurants, Tijuana is not just downtown or Avenida Revolución!!! City is huge! Let's use our dollars to help the TJ economy not just seeing this city as a dorm city.

San Diego for 10 years…moved to Tijuana in 2019 and I cross The Border on a Scooter….although I survive paycheck to paycheck I feel like a retired man😂 I still do everything in San Diego but end of the day my home is Mexico…OH people are so nice here too! I grew up in Idaho and I still visit and I can feel feel people’s nasty and rude attitudes in the air…Mexico in unassumingly the answer!

@@tlgs825 apply for Sentri it will take quite some time to get your interview. I waited 2 years…my friend set his appointment for like Arizona and he went there just for his Sentri interview and got his within’ a couple months. While waiting I commuted with my motorbike for 2years unless my shift start was 10am I would do the 2hr wait in Ready Lane. Now I have Sentri and it takes me 30min from my place to cross the border rather than the 2plus hrs. I love it here I enjoy all of Socal at less than half the cost and I just have to drive 20min to get to work and everything I do people I know. I love at the end of the day I get to creep into the night and disappear into a place between 2 Countries where I get me peace and quiet away from the political bs…Tijuana🙌🏾

@@tlgs825 oh that I am not sure about I have never crossed on foot into The States. Either way the wait and patience is worth it in the end. I just went for it and had to adjust to the flow of things and I came out a winner in the end of all those long waits in Ready Lane. If you got the patience and willing to make the sacrifice it will all pay off.

It just looked like you were next to a travel trailer. The reason I ask is about the Hot Water, does Tijuana not have independent water heaters for homes and apartments? Also, You said the Global entry, is that good for you to live in Tijuana year round? I'm kind of confused about the Century card. Is this for quick access through the border only? Lastly, what are taxes like for residents in Tijuana? Thanks again, God bless.

Hi Rick! Thank you for your comment! We were filming part of this video next to our Airbnb trailer we rented in San Diego. We are full time travelers and do not currently have a place to call home. Stay tuned by subscribing. :) Most homes here in Mexico use gas to heat the water and rarely do we see electric heaters. Typically, they are tank-style heaters, which heat up a tank of water so that the hot water is ready at whatever time we need it. The volume of water in the tank is dependent on the demand or requirement of water for the house. Global Entry is a Century Card and they help you a lot with coming back into the US and you will save a ton of time. Mexican income tax rates for U.S. expats and Americans living in Mexico have set income tax rates, ranging from 0% to 30%, and Mexican residents have income tax rates ranging from 0% to 35%. We work online and have our mailing address in the US so we pay US taxes only.

The fact that you cannot flush toilet paper and don't have constant hot water may be due to your particular accommodation and not to Tijuana itself? I mean if you paid more could you not get a place without these issues?

@@tenminutetasks Well I understand paying more is not a guarantee however I guess it's more likely that the plumbing will be good if it's a more expensive area, cause the only reason why plumbing would be inadequate is lack of investment basically. Also if you had your own hot water tank or tankless heater then you should have constant hot water.

You're right. It is "more likely", but not guaranteed. We have stayed in over 26 countries, and it's quite common to throw toilet paper in the trash vs in the toilet in many parts of the world. There were hardly ever homes with running hot water. We're quite privileged here in the US, actually. My mom just replaced her countertops and kitchen sink and the plumber says he can only come by in a few days from now. So, we've been washing dishes in the bathroom sink and leaving them to dry in the bathtub. You work with what you've got, right? lol. Thanks for the engaging comment!

Is it possible to commute back and forth? Perhaps getting up a little earlier in the day, getting back to Mexico having an sentri pass shouldn't be to bad? How much is the ferry in San Ysidro to get into San Diego? Does it take you to central San Diego?

Yes, the commute is possible. Many people do it every day. We just find it a hassle and not worth it for us. Sentry pass is a must. You can take the trolley from San Ysidro to get to downtown San Diego. There is no ferry, but we're assuming you meant trolley.

It's easy! We'd recommend starting with Airbnb and finding the right place then talking with the locals about renting a place long term in that area.

You mentioned remote workers would benefit from living in Tijuana. Can you tell me how is the internet service when using it alot? How much does it cost for the fastest internet service? Does the government tend to shut off power and the internet in the country? Thank you in advance.

We used the internet from our Airbnb and we had unlimited service. There were very few times when the power shut off or the internet didn't work. It's overall pretty good and fast wifi in Tijuana.

Great question! Tat used to live in São Paulo, Brazil which is a much bigger city than Tijuana. She learned the Portugese language and became very aware of her surroundings to feel safe. Tat rode Ubers and walked across the border as a big pregnant woman in Tijuana and made it back and forth just fine. You do what you feel safe to do. We hope things work out in your favor. 🙏🏼

Ya why not? but if you can, try to get a sentri card, the wait is like 15 minutes to cross the border, take bus taxes all the time nothing is going to happen, the fears are in your mind, I have a truck, but something just for fun

Encouraging people who are not from the area to pay prices (tips) at the rate you would tip or pay in the US is how places start charging more bc people are uneducated on the different rates of exchange.

@@MileswithMorris if I had a public channel providing information to a target market from the US, then I would avoid educating to tip this way, so as to avoid gentrification of poor areas. My opinion on accepting a tip in Mexico is irrelevant bc I am a US citizen, and within the US tipping is expected and it is normally a $5 rate.

Obviously there is no problem with tipping, but when you are educating US citizens and expats on the best ways to behave and support a foreign economy it can be damaging to the local people if these foreigners raise local prices bc a KZbin channel told them how to act, behave, and spend money.

I’m sorry to say that, those big dollars tips don’t help the Americans living in TJ, just because they’ve been priced out of California, Mexicans think that Every American is wealthy and couldn’t be further from the truth.I was charged 25 dollars to cross the border since I was unwell ( have a heart condition) could not walk that day. That was 25 dollar for a less than 5 minutes ride on a very old and basic wheelchair.

You’re a nice guy, but I’m afraid that being generous to the degree of giving a $5 tip for an $8 haircut is going to make locals believe that they can easily raise prices across the board for rich “gringos” who are so willing to overpay and may eventually ruin it for the rest of us. Costa Rica’s prices raised dramatically over the years because of all the gringos who came down throwing their money around. Now, it’s expensive compared to other central American countries. No more bargains. They ruined it. Just sayin…
