My Dad worked for a very well known gunsmith back in college...in 1963. He built a .243(which was then a pretty new round) which I now have. It's a milled down(for weight) Douglas premium benchrest barrel(26") on a 1929 Mauser short ring action and Timmney trigger. I've been making unbelievable shots on "dirt dogs"(what we called prairie dogs in Cheyenne) and targets for the last 40 years. I've had great luck with the Sierra 100gr's and RL15 pushing the sweet spot of 3000fps. It's funny to see the .243 coming back in to favor after years of being relegated to women, children and varmints. Oh...Killed a LOT of antelope and mulies with it as well...

Nice shooting man. Just getting into long range shooting. My son will be using his .243 and I've got a 6.5 Creedmoor. Great to see that you can make a .243 ring at 1,000 yards on a small target!! Awesome man!

What grain bullet seems to be the most accurate in a 1/10 twist? Also what grain bullet is best for Hunting coyotes?
@WestDesertShooter
@WestDesertShooter 6 жыл бұрын
I would say 87 Gr Vmax for both those questions extremely accurate and it is a varmint bullet design with a good BC for long range shooting. Id say its one of the best ll around bullets for the 243, I wouldn't hunt medium or large game with the Vmax id switch to a 100 Gr soft point

You might might want to consider a bubble, but looks like you're very consistent without one. Would help you with the longer shots if you ever run across issues with canting your rifle. I love my .243, I think some people don't realize how good the cartridge is. I can't help but laugh when everyone starts ranting about all the "new" 6mm stuff.
@WestDesertShooter
@WestDesertShooter 6 жыл бұрын
I do have one but it’s on a different scope. I need to get a few but occasionally the bubble ends up on the 243. The reason I don’t have it on the 243 is my AR drops more so I put the bubble on that since it will be effected more

Great video, I'm setting up a Tikka t3x lite stainless in 243 now. What Factory ammunition would you recommend for shooting out to 400 yards ?
@life_of_riley88
@life_of_riley88 Жыл бұрын
The rifle will do it, but what are you shooting at? Bullet weight and construction are the most important if taking any game at that distance. If it's game of any decent size, a 100-105 grain bullet is what you'll want, but you need to make damn sure it has the terminal energy on target to do the job. If it's prairie dogs, then yeah, no problem, but don't think you'll be taking any elk or moose.

I currently hunt with A tikka T3 lite short barrel 308. I'm looking at stepping up to a long range tikka rifle. What are your thoughts on why you chose 243 instead of 6.5? Also, since I reload should I just stick to a 308
@WestDesertShooter
@WestDesertShooter 6 жыл бұрын
Well, 6.5 was a more expensive option at the time(rifle and ammo) and wasn’t as available as it is today. I’d definitely say a 6.5 Tikka would be a great long range gun. I bought the 243 after learning a 108 Gr 243 has the same drops as a 300 WM which is what I had before the Tikka. It made sense because it cost less and had the potential to fly as good but with the 1:10 barrel it can’t shoot the bullets to keep up with the 300 WM.
@MattChat56

West Desert Shooter great points. So you would recommend going to the 6.5 Creed today if I was get into that game?

Yeah it’s a great little round, recoil is very tolerable for all day shooting and there are a ton of awesome Bullets to choose from. As well as a bunch of people shooting it to ask them about details you might need like how far off the lands to seat Bullets or something
