Here's the thing about TikTok... There's a lot of educational content on there. I've seen lessons on everything from Native American recipes to laundry folding tips. These Holocaust videos are NOT educational. They come across as if they are being made by teenagers who read one chapter of a textbook that talked about it. Educational content about the Holocaust could absolutely make it on TikTok and even go viral, but these people (mostly teens) are romanticizing it and using the narratives for views.

I'm German. Where I'm from history lessons in school were about the Holocaust 90% of the time. No one thought they were being brought into a special room. Everyone there knew what would happen(, unless they're like 4). Not EVERY fucking person was brought into Auschwitz. Not EVERYONE there was Jewish. These kids know like 2 things about the Holocaust and try to spread awareness, and for what? Imo it would've been different to maybe talk about how American politics right now have a lot of things in common with German politics back then. Raise awareness about how just because it has been Germany's mistake, doesn't mean that America cannot learn from it (bc rn it doesn't seem like they did). But no, you wanted to make a TikTok about how pretty you are so you thought "The Nazis would rape me, right? Like I'm hot, right?" Anyway this made me really mad. And if you actually want to watch something that explores the social circumstances surrounding this topic in recent times I recommend the movie "Die Welle". It's not a documentary, it's an actual movie which engages the viewer into critical thinking about todays environment and imo is suitable for young teenagers.

I think a lot of it stems from them being so young and possibly not knowing too much about the Holocaust, whether due to our education system or just sheer ignorance, or possibly both. To them it probably seems like something that happened so long ago (even though it really wasn’t) that they don’t understand the true weight of the topic (not meant to defend these tiktoks just a possible explanation) I’m an American and, while I learned a decent bit about WWII and the holocaust in school, the weight of it all didn’t really set in until I actually visited the Dachau concentration camp, or what’s currently left of it anyway. That experience alone was enough to make me realize the true horrors and evil that took place during that time.

Good lord... Spreading awareness is going to school and talking about it in front of the class, making a presentation, recommending books about the topic. I know that because thats what i did when i was 13. My great-grandparents have fled in 1938 to france and from there to south America, the rest of the family - never heard from them again. We went to visit a town with our own lastname, a pretty common german-jewish family name, 90% of the families, most of the families with the same last name as mine, have all died, all jewish and also people, saints basically, who helped them hide and paid for it with their lives. I will never know if they were my family, i will never know their names, never see their faces. Great grandparents family home in Dresden - robbed and taken, along with priceless pictures and everything that they held dear - but they were the lucky ones who survived, their uncles and aunts, their community, all gone! And they think "acting" it out would show ANY respect?? 13yo me knew more about respect and how to spread awareness like a human. This isnt sad or angering, i pity them, they are ignorant and so are their parents for not teaching them basic stuff like respect for the dead. Really a pity

Same with people and making mental illness look cool and quirky these days. There's so many like that. It makes me sick. I think I made a good example with like all the "Anti social club hoodies" Like you see lots of people wearing that, but if you think about it. Would it be as popular if it was "Eating disorder club." It's just clearly being romanticized. I just think Anxiety and depression is very overly used for being "cutesy and quirky." When It actually is horrible to experience. Worlds messed up.

Vigress Understandable! I totally agree. I’m sure there is some people who are socially anxious that wear those kind of things, but for someone who doesn’t have anxiety to wear it? To me it sees a little rude. Perhaps ableist? But I don’t know if ableism is an appropriate term for this? Please do correct me if it isn’t ^^” But yeah I totally agree! Tragedy, mental illness. All things that people like to try and brand themselves under when they don’t have a right to,
