@@userbread1545 women are expected to be virgins till marriage, while men are expected to sleep around. Personally I don’t know how those are supposed to co-exist, but I’m a aro/ace autistic guy, maybe I’m missing something. The social toxic masculinity culture shames men for expressing emotions other then 1, angry, 2 diet happiness, 3, horny, and when they express something going directly against one of those pre-programmed society allowed emotions, that is threatening the social shame that perpetuates the system of self loathing taken out on the marginalized that those on top profit from, and must be punished and stamped out immediately. i know this is an old video, but it’s just so ironic that Lilly calls the people criticizing her virgins as an insult. i remember watching one of her vlogs years ago and she said herself that she was still a virgin (at least at the time) in her late twenties and went on about how it wasn’t a big deal or something to be ashamed about. it’s just so disgusting and sad that she’s gone back on that stance now just to snap back at people criticizing her and her show.

Bro yes!! This is like my 3rd rewatch of this vid and those nasty comments she makes always felt. Weird. I thought it was kind of commendable that, as a 20-something psychology undergrad, she earnestly didn't care about what other people thought about her or her sexuality. When rumors would spring up Abt her relationship with Swoozie or other folks she collabed with, she'd be upfront and honest that she was a complete virgin. Sad how things have changed :-(

Yeah, it’s what some people do when they get any form of criticism. They have a defence mechanism that instead of trying to defuse the situation while keeping cool, (like most people), it’s all morals thrown out the window and they just immediately try and pick, poke and prod at the most common insecurities people have or known insecurities that a singular person has. I never watched Lilly but after doing some digging, you can definitely see the slowly inflating ego and cockiness (as Drew talked about) until it reached the point of, ‘who cares what I say? I’m ✨famous✨’.

Conan would actively shut up his employees saying he went to Harvard. He realized the guy that would introduce him would always say he went to Harvard, and then the audience would become much more skeptical of him and his jokes. Once the intro guy stopped that, laughs came a lot more easily for him. Lily should’ve learned from him and not be “wow I’m rich and have a mansion and am a celebrity”

To the point of bragging on camera about being famous, it only works if you do it ironically, in a self-deprecating way. Conan is the king of self-deprecating comedy, and this is why he's so endearing. He's miles richer and more popular and than Lilly, but he STILL plays the "look what a loser I am" card whenever he's on camera. It's always about how goofy he looks, or how comically tall he is, or how Irish he is, or he pretends to be a fake creep with his female guests.

Lilly was my favorite KZbin person in middle school. I hadn't watched her content in years and just recently went back to it this week. I actually fell out of watching her content before the late night show. Once she reached a certain point of success, I felt like her production quality skyrocketed but her actual content never evolved and it developed this insincere quality to it. And watching her videos now, they're not that funny, but I enjoy her videos before 2017ish because it felt like she was at least enjoying herself and she seemed likable. I wouldn’t completely count YTers out of a talk show but they really have to be worth it & can make up jokes on the spot. These clips of Lily are clearly read & prepared & it’s just not funny. She’s always done solo videos. Having her go from solo “comedy” KZbin clips to an entire talk show was such a bad idea. She has nothing to back up her being a talk show host

I’m so happy someone finally said this. I remember years and years ago when my friend first showed me Lily Singh’s videos. She was totally mad about her. So was everyone else around me .I tried so much to understand what people like about her videos. They failed to even make me smile…. forget about laughing. I thought maybe I’m the one whose definition of funny was different 😂.I’m an Indian and I think the only reason she became that successful was because we Indians wanted a global influencer representing India . Wish it had been someone else.

I think the biggest problem (besides the whole identity jokes which got old fast0 is that the most successful late night show hosts worked on other shows and not as headliners. Guys like Meyers, Conan, Stewart all worked as joke writers and/or secondary characters. They had years of collaborative training to hone their skills so when they got their chance they knew how to work with the joke writers and find a unique voice without being overwhelmed.

I know this video is old but I was rewatching this and something I’d like to add is that Lilly being Indian (or just immigrant families in general (me coming from a Latin family)) has a little bit to do with her decisions making. Because when you come from immigrant parents they’re biggest wish is for their kids to become successful in the US. And honestly no matter how hard you try to explain, it’s very VERY hard to make an older generation understand modern media (KZbin, twitch, etc. ) so if I was in her shoes and wanted to show my parents that I’m an “actual” famous celebrity not just some weirdo in my house with a high budget, I’d take that into consideration.

saying a white guy's opinions doesn't matter when the subject matter is jokes about white men is like saying black people can't complain about any black jokes I make.
@jessicastjames6202
@jessicastjames6202 4 ай бұрын
No, it's not, because you and other white people have never been oppressed at a systemic level by black people. God fucking forbid men grow a thicker skin so women can vent a bit about the systemic oppression they're subjected to. Aren't men the ones always telling us to "learn to take a joke"? So why doesn't it go the other way? Oh right, because white men have the thinnest skin on the fucking planet and will instantly start crying their eyes out if one extremely tame joke is made at their expense lmao

@@jessicastjames6202 I agree partly with what you are saying. You're right that there has been more systemic oppression to POC and women in the past and there still is today. What I don't agree with, is the generalization. As a girl who's heard "learn to take a joke" more times than I can count from both genders, being mean is not a trait connected to men or women. Venting about being oppressed is not the same thing as saying "white men are stupid and dumb hahahaha" Saying someone is too sensitive because they're upset that someone made a joke at their expense isn't right, no matter who that person is. You're acting like every white man on the planet has been openly racist/sexist and they can't handle getting a taste of their own medicine. This isn't true. Maybe instead of telling people to "grow a thicker skin", we should stop making mean jokes altogether?
