We have to hold our phones FAR away, even when taking selfies, and guess what... your favorite TikToker already knows this and does it. Thank you for mentioning something concrete like this. An overarching "this isn't reality and you are beautiful" is a wonderful message, but some people want concrete facts to feel convinced that this isn't just blowing smoke. Influencers know all the tricks. The camera tricks, the filter tricks, the lighting tricks, the makeup tricks, the Facetune tricks... and even then post only their favorites to social media. About minors there: I used to be on the Trust and Safety team of a mobile game company (can't say the name, I'm still under NDA), and one of my colleagues used to work for TikTok. The way they moderate videos is honestly terrible, and very dangerous for young people on the platform. Having minors posting content is not safe for them, and the app doesn’t have enough ways to safeguard them. After working in the industry, I honestly became even more someone who's against young people posting anything with their identity online, and infinitely grateful that when I was growing up the culture was of avoiding that until you were old enough (I used the internet a lot, just never with my face, and barely with my name).

I think part of the problem (in writing format) is character limits. The respectful rephrasing is significantly longer to type, which means you'll be posting multiple comments at best. In video form, the shorter the video, the better it does - the longer, the more likely you are to be ignored by the algorithm - thus incentivising adopting the written short forms into the verbal format. Not saying it's right that this happens, just trying to explain the driving force behind this behavior. If we want to fix this, we will need to come up with a solution that gets to the root of the problem: algorithms dictating our media.

I find that of the weird terminology used on tiktok that has migrated to real life, “grape” and “grapist” have been useful for both discussing something related around people who may be triggered by the real word, or as a safety measure in public spaces to warn others. most of them are not something I think should be used regularly as it disrespects the people actually facing those issues, but this one has been useful for me

Honestly the most telling thing about tiktok shop is that most of the actual artists and small businesses I've seen on my FYP don't use it. They might have a tiktok for promotional reasons but use a platform like Etsy or shopify for sales. Like 99% of the tiktok shop content I've seen is people selling an obviously marked-up dropshipped product. Not once have I watched a tiktok shop video or live and thought "I wanna buy that".

My biggest one is it's allowed the mass apropriation of genuine medical and mental health terms, so when you try and discuss symptoms it is so much harder to be taken seriously because the weight of those words has lessened to a trend or a quirky thing

the censorship of words happens on youtube too though so i think the problem is that companies like tiktok and youtube shouldn't be punishing their creators for talking about serious topics just for advertizing money and also that advertizers shouldn't be so puritanical when they choose their audience. why do children need to be the baseline for ALL ads when they aren't even the ones with money.

I’m pretty sure they were on FaceTime showing off the room, not necessarily me, and I don’t think there’s a recorded or posted video anywhere- but looking up and seeing a stranger pointing a camera at you is pretty scary even if it’s not getting posted, and I can’t imagine how it would feel to randomly come across a video of yourself online or something like that. Filming strangers is so weird and I hate that it’s such a common thing to do

my gripe with the effect tiktok has had on music is more that about half the songs that blow up on tiktok, only a certain portion of it blows up, and while i like that portion, ill go listen to the full song and the rest of the song will suck. like ill be expecting the part that blew up is the chorus and the rest of the song will be more of that, only to find it was actually the bridge, and the chorus that plays for 90 percent of the song is not even in the same ballpark as the bridge. its very annoying. love that small artists are blowing up, dont love people designing their songs around this, dont love wildly different bridges that i like way more than the rest of the song

For example the way that youtube allows you to click "home". Also a lot of things are really fleeting. Like I want to remember stuff I want to think about things, discuss with others and understand. But a lot of the time. There is nowhere to express nuance. Also trying to find a tiktok video is impossible. My art has grown so much over the past few years because of it, I've interacted with so many of my favorite niche games and fandoms because of it.
