A museum adopting "unalive" when talking about Kurt Cobain's suicide from Tiktok's self censoring users puts a very bad taste in my mouth
@ceoofeternaldamnation
@ceoofeternaldamnation 15 сағат бұрын
It’s because the algorithm will censor words containing sexual or violent content (like suicide), so they had to come up with new phrase to keep themselves from being restricted. I don’t like it and agree it unintentionally waters down serious topics/at least stay on tiktok, but it is important to note that it’s due to the algorithm and not people being quirky.

I reaply hate the excuse of censorship when it comes to saying things like 'grapist' 'watermelon people' 'unalived' 'cheese pizza' because theres so many more respectful ways to refer to these things rather than turning it into something silly. "They forced themself onto the victim" "inappropriate material involving children" etc etc. The censorship is a problem too of course but the wordage people use nowadays is so disrespectful.

I think part of the problem (in writing format) is character limits. The respectful rephrasing is significantly longer to type, which means you'll be posting multiple comments at best. In video form, the shorter the video, the better it does - the longer, the more likely you are to be ignored by the algorithm - thus incentivising adopting the written short forms into the verbal format. Not saying it's right that this happens, just trying to explain the driving force behind this behavior. If we want to fix this, we will need to come up with a solution that gets to the root of the problem: algorithms dictating our media.

It's people's way around censorship. Would your rather them use true words and get shadow banned or outright banned and no word ever getting out? or they use code words to keep knowledge spreading? At some point something has to give.

Honestly the most telling thing about tiktok shop is that most of the actual artists and small businesses I've seen on my FYP don't use it. They might have a tiktok for promotional reasons but use a platform like Etsy or shopify for sales. @@DavidJones-ot8qu respectfully, I disagree with this take. The social aspect of the internet is very useful in moderation, being able to communicate with people around the world that have similar interests is very cool, like right now - we're in a comment section because we're all subscribed to D'Angelo or happened to stumble across this video on the recommended feed. It connects people that would otherwise never meet. Saying it's creating distance between people is disingenuous. What caused that are bad actors. People who are trapped in echo Chambers and continously reinforce their extreme beliefs and become a caricature. Those who puppeteer people who are already mentally unwell and try to isolate them. The money-hungry companies that make these services addictive to get better metrics for investors. These are not the fault of the invention, but the people who got power over it.

One thing I don't like about tiktok is how random going viral can be. If you're small on youtube and just uploading to share with friends, it's extremely unlikely to be recommended to millions of people. On Tiktok, somebody venting about a bad day can suffer huge life-changing reactions. Not tiktok exclusive, but online spaces used to be more self-contained (forums, fandom groups), but now it is "content creation" and not communicating with online friends.

About minors there: I used to be on the Trust and Safety team of a mobile game company (can't say the name, I'm still under NDA), and one of my colleagues used to work for TikTok. The way they moderate videos is honestly terrible, and very dangerous for young people on the platform. Having minors posting content is not safe for them, and the app doesn’t have enough ways to safeguard them. After working in the industry, I honestly became even more someone who's against young people posting anything with their identity online, and infinitely grateful that when I was growing up the culture was of avoiding that until you were old enough (I used the internet a lot, just never with my face, and barely with my name).

My art has grown so much over the past few years because of it, I've interacted with so many of my favorite niche games and fandoms because of it. I didn't have opinions until this, now i do! - 52 part tiktok stories are similar to free shipping thresholds. "I can get this $5 shipping fee for free if i spend $7 more dollars on products." Is the same energy as "I watched 52 1 minute videos! It's okay cause it was only a minute!" -the language thing really grinds my gears but blaming creators is the wrong way to fix it. The language evolved because the platforms started restricting videos and people got creative. It's the platforms we need to criticize for silencing people enough to have them create a new language out of it. In my opinion. Allegedly. All that stuff.

The only thing I hate about TikTok is the cringe culture. Tiktok is hell if you’re not what society deems attractive, and you’re basically “cringe” for existing and doing anything and filming it. I legit see people being straight up bullies to people who are less conventionally attractive just doing something. If it was a hot person it would be fine, but if you’re “ugly”, “fat” and/or visibly neurodivergent, then it’s “hahaha look at these cringe people! Point and laugh like it’s a zoo!” I’m not conventionally attractive myself so I avoid places like TikTok which basically require you to show your face to billions of strangers to be on the app and not treated like a bot. I can barely handle my own internal criticisms let alone some tween with the username skibbidi2015 telling me to kms bc I’m ugly in the comments.

As smart as a rabbit scientist, who writes papers about the glucose content of carrots. Their findings in short: Carrots produce glucose during the day through photosynthesis, so the carrot has enough sugar that can be depleted through the night. So if you want your carrots really sweet, harvest them in the evening. ------- Yes, I fell down a rabbit hole while researching this. As someone who recently “made it” only making long-form content on KZbin I can confirm that you 100% don’t need to make TikToks to have your channel take off. You just have to make videos that are better than 99.9% of what’s already uploaded here and that’s where people are truly struggling.
