Please be aware that "local farms" do not at all mean that the animals had an acceptable life. Also "local" farms often have horrible conditions, also there you usually find industrial animal farming where the individual animal is worth nothing, also there animals suffer. I don't mean to judge anyone, many people just don't know. I mean to inform and hopefully make some people reconsider their choices about what they buy.

@@sofiebrammer1482I used to be a butcher at a local shop to me in PA and what you’re saying is simply not true. Most of the local farms to me treat their animals very well and most small scale farmers believe in a simpler, kind and traditional manner of doing things. You are lumping all farmers in a way that contributes to the spread of misinformation.
@sofiebrammer1482
@sofiebrammer1482 Күн бұрын
@leorising8074 I wrote about LOCAL farms, not SMALL farms. But also small farms are not a guarantee for animal wellbeing. Maybe it is completely different in the US, but where I live (Germany) I visited many small farms and at most of them, the animals were not able to live a life according to their needs. I explicitly did NOT write that ALL farms were treating animals badly. So please don't argue against strawmen, but against what I actually wrote.

@@leorising8074 Can you explain what you see as "treat their animals well"? Because there, the views already can differ a lot. For me, already the term "their animals" seems strange, because I don't think one can own a sentient being - but probably there our views already differ. In the end we are talking about other sentient beings who actually would need to be asked whether they want to live in the conditions we put them in. They just do not speak our language, so we don't even try to listen.

If folks can afford their shopping addiction, they can take their skincare/makeup/clothing/hygiene items to a women’s shelter to turn it into something positive in the end. All these razors? Unopened products? Imagine the people you could uplift with this that actually need it.

As someone who was in a situation where I needed donations, sadly, the bulk of donations already come from shopaholics who treat charity like a feel-good trashcan. Most of the clothes donated were gaudy animal prints with the tags still on, all XXXL (these were not just the leftovers, this was a natural disaster situation not a thrift shop trip). Clearly bought by the same person who cleared out their haul. Bath products, we got sooo much sealed makeup to choose from but I had to comb my hair with a fork the first few days. And we didn't get a frying pan, but we did get a barbeque baste injector!

@ that’s a huge bummer. To have to deal with people’s unwanted trash in addition to a natural disaster is really hurting instead of helping. I’m sorry you had to deal with that. Knowing where to send what is a big part. A DV shelter might love having makeup to give to people but in a disaster relief situation, you don’t need discarded junk. You need tools to survive.

I'm a therapist who specialises in addiction & I see the rationalisation people give themselves to excuse their addiction, often as a facet of denial. Usually, we think of addicts as being alcoholics or meth heads or maybe gamblers. We don't think of them as attractive young women buying clothes they don't need, products they can't ever use before they expire or essentially hoarding rubbish that looks aesthetically pleasing. Addiction is an incredibly complex behaviour & mental state - there's no simple answers & unfortunately more people skate along the addiction line than they'd care to admit.

This a very insightful reply. It also showcases how behaviors like this are not only enabled, but encouraged due to the lack of education around addiction and mental health. I think the mindset becomes "If it is a trend on tiktok and you are being encoueaged by your peers, how can it be wrong? It's not like smoking or doing drugs." I think it is something that we should be teaching (in the form of digital literacy and safe/responsible social media consumption) to children in schools. And of course at home!

I am a minimalist and the daughter of a hoarder. My mother really didn't have many hobbies, she didn't have a rich interior life, she was purely a consumer. The only thing she was interested in doing with me was going shopping, which I didn't enjoy, but at least it was something for us to do. All she cared about was appearances, of which she was very critical of mine. She had an overwhelming collection of clothes, and jewellery, and makeup. Every time she visited, she would dump her latest bag of things she didn't want anymore on me. Maybe hoping I'd start dressing to her standards. This was her endless cycle, shopping for things she didn't need and going home to throw out the old things she never needed in the first place. I can confirm, this seems to stem from her loneliness and lack of purpose since dad left. Humans were never meant to own a vast number of possessions. Every item you own burdens you psychologically, even if you're completely unaware of it. The less I own, the happier I am.

I have been in “recovery” for a significant makeup addiction. I’ve had to downsize my “collection” because I moved from a house where I had a beauty room to a very small apartment. I’m talking lots of expired and barely used makeup was wasted. It is the “thrill of the hunt “ that got me that dopamine rush. BTW, I do NOT have a KZbin channel, nor any other so called reason to have this many products. My collection now consists of one tall and one short IKEA Alex drawers. Those were all the rage a few years ago. My collection is nothing compared to the ones you show in your video. I’m an amateur compared to these women. My worst weakness 0:15 is eyeshadow palettes. I only have 2 eyes, but I own 200 palettes. That is after a major declutter from my move. I gave the ones I decluttered after I disinfected them to friends and family. I couldn’t give them to a women’s shelter because they were used (barely). I’m disgusted by my addiction and trying to stick to a no buy.

My dad had a shopping addiction. He called himself a "collector" but was clearly a hoarder. I think it stemmed from his childhood. His mom gave him and his brothers up for adoption when they were young and his foster mom would throw out their toys and he used to tell me that now his collection and action figures would never abandon him the way that friends and family had. I think for some people it is comforting to just be surrounded by stuff. RIP dad.

another thing to remember is that for successful influencers, especially reviewers, this is their job. they MAKE money out of these products. even those ridiculous haul videos can serve as effective advertisement (as in reach many people through the algorhytm). influencers are not concerned whether they'll use everything by the time it expires because even if they don't, the products have long done their job as business tools. meanwhile for us ordinary people, the products are just something we spend money on, and wasted product is money down the drain. influencers' "collections" are not something we can or should strive for basically. (also I highlighted successful because I'd bet money there are influencers who tried becoming successful, but ultimately failed and spent more money on products than what their channel/social media could ever make)

I am a mental health professional and I 100% agree with you, Hannah that there are issues here going so much deeper than just wanting stuff. Unfortunately, in our society, we have made light of the term "retail therapy", and somehow made spending just to feel better an acceptable form of self-medication. This kind of binge shopping or collecting usually is to either feed an addiction, boost self-worth, or soothe symptoms of a past trauma. The biggest issue is it is a very temporary fix with damaging consequences. I have worked with people with severe shopping addictions, and out of control "collections", and sadly, the root causes are complex and often heartbreaking.
@JustJ-Me
@JustJ-Me 22 сағат бұрын
Thank you for mentioning that in further detail. I left a comment earlier that I was glad there was mention of potential trauma and having to "go without" that could be at play with some of what we're seeing. I believe I've read that there's a potential genetic/hereditary component to hoarding. Are you familiar with any of that being true? Also, I thought I had also read that hoarding ("diagnosable" cases) can be, or are, categorized with obsessive compulsive disorders... Is any of that accurate to your knowledge? I imagine there is a strong likelihood of comorbidity with other disorders? I can't help but wonder how much of simply finding it "cute," "trendy," "quirky," etc. to 0verconsume and 0rganize morphed into actual disorders for some of these ppl. 🤔 The idea of doing this for "fun"/ "entertainment" rather sickens me as someone with diagnosed OCD, OCPD, C-PTSD, and other disorders. "Organized hoarding" (I say that ½-jokingly) has been passed down for 2-3 generations on both my mom and dad's side of the family. None of it is cute or comes without consequences. It can be "fun," but only to an extent. Can it be "quirky" or even esthetically pleasing to buy & organize products? Sure, but at a significant cost in many, many ways. I can say it greatly affects my quality of life. I see a therapist, but it's really hard to break ways of thinking and behaving that are mostly, if not fully, irrational and have been with me since childhood. The ruminations and time spent trying to "perfect" the things around me are absolutely exhausting both physically and mentally. I really struggle to find the middle ground (if I do find it, it's not as satisfying as acting on my compulsions, and can be terrifying to even attempt to accept, let alone change). I hope this makes sense? Apologies if not. I'm tired and overstimulated. I wish there were more affordable options & resources for those like myself who are struggling. Take care❣️

also this might shed some light on this - my house burned down when i was 8, like fully burned down i only had the clothes on my back. i lived for over a year out of a backpack while we were searching for a new house. for me, it made me like this “minimalist” lifestyle & i’ve continued just having what i need pretty much. but my mother? it turned her into a hoarder. she seriously saves everything & buys random stuff “just in case we need it one day”. i feel like this just shows you how the same experience can really have two opposite effects on people.

When I first started watching beauty social media, it was all about makeup tutorials, beautiful shades and colors, gorgeous eyeshadow looks etc. Then, somewhere, somehow, it turned into extreme overconsumption. All these companies snatched onto the beauty world on social media, and began using them as advertising platforms. This is where it all began…from the companies ruining beauty KZbin. Now they’ve given so much PR to influencers, they turn around and make videos of their horrifically huge amounts of makeup and skincare collections. Then the companies keep sending more and more PR. Most of those influencers do NOT buy those products. Even if they have a receipt…Sephora and other companies will allow them to shop with a card given to them, so it only LOOKS like they bought it, but they didn’t. I went down a rabbit hole thinking I needed a huge makeup collection, thankfully I snapped out of it quickly and realized those influencers aren’t genuine. They aren’t buying any of those products. It’s not feasible to buy that much stuff on a middle class income. I feel bad for the teens out there who are watching all those influencers, and feeling bad about themselves because they don’t have all that stuff. I hope this anti overconsumption phase continues, and more and more videos are created, exposing this grotesque behavior.

You’re absolutely right on it being an addiction / tied in with mental illness. This is niche, but I got super into fountain pens a couple years back. I have something like 30 bottles of ink, which isn’t even half as much as some in the fountain pen community, but still more than I can probably get through in my lifetime unless I start writing my novels by hand (not happening.) There are people who buy every new colour of the same pen when it releases, to the point of having close to a hundred of the SAME PEN. They can’t possibly use them. They call themselves collectors. It’s a shopping addiction, point blank. We just don’t see it as a “problem” as easily unless the person’s life is being ruined in the process, and sometimes folks actually have the money, somehow, to keep up with their addiction. I didn’t. I have like 20 fountain pens and I use about 5-6 of them. I’m so glad I reached a moment where I realized it was beginning to get wasteful.

I started this in November (by force because I owed more money on my credit card) but as a beginning for a longer habit. I’m not buying stuff on Amazon anymore unless I *really* need it. I never buy a lot, especially for myself. But it really adds up. 10$ here, 5$ there. I was also ordering for my family once a week. With all the delivery fees, taxes it was adding up to $150 each time. So that’s $600! Money that can go for something else. I’m cooking all our meals now. And ordering once a month. At the end if I have money to spare. It actually feels empowering.

I thought the way I purchased was normal. Then I realized my scarcity mindset and how I shopped like I needed to have a backup storage for everything. It took me an embarrassing amount of time to realize I was so overstocked I couldn't put things away where they go anymore. My cleaning closet is overflowing, my drawers are over flowing, my pantry is overflowing, my freezers (yes, plural) are Over flowing, my garage is getting full 🤦‍♀️ So this year I'm trying my first No Buy year, or however long it takes to use up all this stuff. Nothing new if I can help it! I have to tell myself "it's okay if I like something and then never find it again, I don't have to buy 3-5 'just in case'"

Im on a similar journey too! Buying less, and living with less so I appreciate it more. One thing that really helps me is an idea that came from my exploration of buddhism. The idea is that you don't have to possess an item to have it. It already exists in the world, and you exist in the world, together. So it's now in your world. By existing alongside whatever it is, you already have it in your life. Im not good as phrasing things, but that's the idea! idk, hope it's helpful in some way. good luck on your No Buy Year! I bet it's gonna be full of learning and growth🌱

Agreed, also, could some of these influencers who actually buy the products return them after filming content? They don't usually sample every product in a haul so my thoughts are they sample the stuff they planned to keep return the rest for a refund, as not all will suit their skin or style, get income from promoting affluent and excessive life styles including brand endorsements due to the volume of people watching / buying to try and be like them and fill a whole in themselves. Addiction, manipulation, loneliness, depression, anxiety- I think there's a lot that play into these influencers life styles.

I almost developed a shopping addiction because I grew up in an abusive household, and I didn't have anything for myself because my mom would steal my money and anything I owned but she liked more. Most of my stuff was from Goodwill or "lost and found" boxes. After I moved out, I was in a toxic work environment that made me hate myself even more. It also didn't help that I may have undiagnosed ADHD, so I hyperfixated on a new random thing almost every week. I bought so many things that I really didn't need. I had to stop watching hauls and cut back on my spending because I realized that buying the childhood I never had wasn't working. I'm saving that money to go towards therapy and getting the help that I actually need. It is SO easy to impulse buy if you don't have healthy coping mechcanisms and tools to improve your mindset.

I think Tiktok has produced a perfect storm for people who are already prone to overbuying. Not only do they gain the dopamine hit from the purchase, but also from posting the accompanying content and the subsequent views, likes and subscriber increases. This is a pretty potent combination and I can understand how it leads to a cycle of one-upmanship where every "haul" and every new piece of content must outdo the preceding ones. The result are the absolutely egregious cases that you highlight in this series. Thanks for the work you do, it is appreciated 🙂

And only a few months ago the WHO and/or the Norwegian ministry of health issued a warning addressing exactly this issue: overconsumption of make-up and skincare products especially in young women. Girls as young as 10-12 years start using anti aging products and wearing thick layers of skin products. The long term effects are unknown and so are many of the ingredients when people order from all around the world. I prefer to shop locally (there is a wonderful lady in my town who makes all natural skincare products) and only what I truly need.

I used to overconsume clothes because I worked in a retail store with clothing. I'd see something and my brain would be like 'YOU HAVE TO GET IT, OR IT'LL BE GONE.' so I'd buy it. When I quit that job and moved on, I was shocked at my situation. My closet was stuffed, my drawers were stuffed, and I wasn't wearing half of it. So, I cleaned out everything I hadn't worn in over a year, donated it, and put myself on a permanent no buy for clothes UNLESS there's an actual need or it's something for a special occasion (like a tour t-shirt from a concert). And I can honestly say, I've never been happier. Stuff does not fill you up, it stresses you out. I used to be a shopping addict and now if I buy something, I actually need I feel physically sick to my stomach, like I might fall back into my old shopping habits. This is similar to food addiction in the way that you still need to eat food. This video actually made me feel better about buying an extra moisturizer when it was on sale, because I know it will be used before it expires and doesn't take up that much space and isn't what they are going through with overbuying/overspending/shopping addiction/etc...

This is just the beauty version of what mukbangers do. Overconsumption for entertainment and profit.

I miss how YT was just a few years ago. Now few videos are relatable anymore.

Was about to go to sleep when this video dropped - my priority is to watch Hannah talk about influencers obviously

I have only one face cream and one body cream I keep forgeting to use because of ADHD, and it breaks my heart each time I have to throw them away because they've expired . I can't imagine having so much money thrown away to waste

I can relate-I also have ADHD and often forget aspects of my routine. If a particular item isn't RIGHT in front of me, I may forget that I even own it. It breaks my heart to see so many products go to waste, especially when there are people who would use them rather than keeping them at home like a personal Ulta or Sephora store.

Maybe this tip from a fellow adhd‘er can help you: get a see -through makeup bag if you‘re not able to put all the products you use in clear sight. I adapted this way since living with flatmates

This is terrifying. And all in the era when so much is being said about dwindling resources.
