""""Brutal honesty"""" is the biggest red flag in any human being. 100% of people who take pride in that are more focused on the brutality than the honesty, it's not "dishonest" to shut your mouth when nobody asks for your opinion. I see brutal honesty being kind when its used as tough love to people in denial... but you rarely see that irl because you see way more of social medias unsolicited advice from strangers than you ever see of interventions etc. Because I dont think the average person has many if any people in their life that need a intervention and when they do people generally have empathy and dont broadcast their loved ones shame to the world.

I have really curly hair. Every once in awhile I'll try to straighten it but then after, I remember why I don't- because it actually makes it look dirty, even if I just washed it. Mine is extremely curly, like 80s perm curly- which was cute in the 80s when I was a kid and pre teen but not so much in the 90s when straight flowing hair was popular, even if you went grunge with it- and kind of fluffy. But the minute I straighten it, it looks dirty and is somehow greasy and flat while still having frizz? Not sure how I achieve that but that's what it is.

The way I literally gasped when she said to “make your nose smaller”. I should probably have lowered my expectations but speaking as someone who’s family has very prominent Jewish noses that I’ve always found beautiful, it’s still sometimes a shock how blatantly racist people can be under the guise of “beauty tips”
@fricketyfracktraintrack10 ай бұрын
As a black woman, I've side eyedthe fuck out of contouring since it became a popular concept for this very reason. I have a short nose bridge and a pretty flat nose with large nostrils, very much not a European beauty standard nose. And I've noticed that a lot of these glow up contouring things will attack the shit out of anyone's nose, but especially women of color that do not have the long and sharp nose profile. And I'm not going to lie, it's made me self-conscious at times even though my nose looks fine with the rest of my face and functions as a nose should. And I'm 30 fucking years old lmao.
@Deepseadread610 ай бұрын
@@fricketyfracktraintrack for real! I’m lucky because I grew up around enough people with big noses to have it hammered into my skull that they do look nice and beauty trends are full of shit, but I know a lot of people who’ve been taught basically to be insecure about their facial features since they were children. It’s really so upsetting to me, I have multiple friends who’ve told me about how they used to photoshop their noses in pictures to be smaller. I didn’t grow up with television so I think my first exposure to the idea that a lot of people saw hooked and large noses as ugly was through the Harry Potter books, I remember finding jk Rowlings descriptions of villain characters so needlessly cruel even when I was like nine or ten, it actually shocked me a little lol. Like that woman went to every length to emphasise that her evil characters all had “ugly hooked noses”, it for sure did a number on so many kids and it makes me really sad. Not to mention the crazy fatphobia in those books
@roseJ9610 ай бұрын
Yeah, they kinda just bake these things into your head over the years. I got a large nose and got surgery when I was fifteen to make it so it wasn’t hooked. 27 and now I’m just hating how big it is in general, but you gotta remind yourself it’s all Eurocentric beauty standards and my being able to breathe through my nose is more important than having a small one lol

I have a pretty prominent nose too, and being brown I grew up around lots of people who had beautiful, big, round, all shapes and sizes-noses. I grew so insecure of my nose because even my mother would like squeeze my nose from time to time when I was a kid and say keep doing it it'll get smaller eventually. That shit fucked me up for years. I would beat at my nose bridge to try and get it less bent. Until in 9th grade I realized so many people around me had similar insecurities too. I draw, so I spent a chunk of my time back then drawing the noses of people who said they were insecure of them and showing them how they all are in the grand scheme of things when placed next to each other. I grew an appreciation for my own nose back then too :) BONUS- The only fictional character to ever have a nose like mine is Megamind, and that's a win in my books folks >:)

As someone who had braces for 6+ years and had another thing before that (don't know the name in english) because I was born with a smaller upper jawbone. Orthodontics aren't just for appearance concerns, most of the time our teeth have to be straighten because it lowers the chances of loosing teeth younger and not having dentures or implants younger. Also our teeth aren't usually very white, they are always somewhat off-white coloured and it's perfectly healthy and natural to have a tint. Some people have whiter teeth naturally but bleaching them fuck up your enamel which can lead to sensitive teeth or increase chances to get cavities. Just brush your teeth and use dental floss or dental picks if you have a wire behind your teeth like I do so you can get it as clean as possible. And if you have the means, go to your dentist once a year to get a tartar removal. All in all, I know orthodontics are really expensive and inaccessible in a lot of country. Even in Switzerland it's expensive af, I was "lucky" enough that my condition was seen as a baby and I was entitled to disability insurance to get it fixed so my parents didn't have to ruin themselves for me to have good teeth. One of my brother has a slightly crroked teeth but the dentist said it won't have any impact on his whole denture so he decided to not do anything and it's perfectly okay. If you have good healthy teeth that allows you to eat anything you need, please just brush and floss and don't screw them with cheap whitening products for aesthetics.

Did you have that thing at the roof of your mouth that's supposed to widen the upper jaw? I had a friend in my early teens who had that, and the dentist said at one point that I might need it (but seems like I ultimately didn't, for whatever reason). And yeah, it's not just an aesthetic thing, but a practical one! It's been well over a decade since the roof thing was brought up to me but it was mention because my bite is crooked due to my upper jaw being too narrow, and I think the dentist said something about how it could cause headaches later down the line (??)

My jaw was wired shut for a week from the moment I woke up from general anesthesia, and it took a bit to adjust to my new bite, open my jaw more than an inch, and regain most of the feeling in my top gums. I don’t think I’ll ever regain the full feeling but I can finally bite into something and actually tear it with my teeth, although I still cut my pizza and stay away from apples out of habit. 😂 In total, I had a TMJ appliance for nine months, braces for almost five years and the palate surgery. I always think Shel Silverstein put it best wayyyy back when. He had a poem for kids about beauty, and it really was always right. You can have buck teeth, a wonky nose, frizzy hair, and as long as there's happy thoughts and a kindness in you, it shines out and makes you pretty no matter what the outside looks like. Also Accutane can really fuck you up. It's hormone therapy that can make you enervated, depressed or experience suicidal thoughts, and it's supposed to be for people who have extremely intense acne that is painful and can't be reduced with other treatments. You have to take it for about a year, and get monthly blood work done. I know, I took it and needed it. It's not something to just recommend to anyone with any amount of acne.

I had really bad cracking and bleeding eczema, my asthma got worse over that time, I had really bad and worsening anxiety. Even after that my skin, that hasn’t suffered eczema since I was a baby still has issues as well as almost zero tolerance for sun. I am a quarter japanese and used to tan super easily, almost never got burned; last time I went to Hawaii with my family I had sun poisoning for half the trip. The most real life experience i can offer is my mom, shes really beautiful and has been harassed in the work place her entire life to the point it is her normal, older generation things, and now that shes older in a male dominated workspace ppl dont even offer her a platform to speak or take her seriously despite her credentials and experience, ive witnessed it as ive been on work trips with her throughout the years.
