Hi, @Gearisko and friends. I love the cosmic horror uncanny valley theory as much as the next person (and this is by no means a criticism of that theory or of the work of the artist in the video; their work is dope and unsettling af, like, in a really good way), but i just thought i would pop in to explain why humans are icked out by the uncanny valley. Being around rotting corpses is very bad for your health. Especially if that person died from something toxic or contagious. Even if you really loved that person before they died. As soon as the body dies, it begins to rot. Skin sloughs off. The lips recede, making the dead person look like they're grimacing or smiling creepily. The eyes sink in. You get the picture. They still look like the person you loved, but they begin to look "off", as you put it. The Uncanny Valley is most likely a phenomenon / feeling instilled by evolution to make us stay away from / "prepare" / "deal with" (burial, cremation, whatever you prefer) the biohazardous corpses of our loved ones so that we don't get sick. Its a mechanism to override our intense instinct to stay with the bodies of those we love, so that we don't kill ourselves by staying. It also serves as a sensation that alerts us that something could be wrong with someone if their appearance changes drastically during an illness. I think this explanation is just as (if not more) existentially distressing as the prehistoric cosmic monster theory. ✨️🌚✨️ stay weird y'all

i can never get behind the idea of the uncanny valley being because "our ancestors had to fear something that looked like us but wasnt". like that's .... the uncanny valley exists because all the little things we perceive as creepy were once earmarks of potentially infectious diseases, disabilities, disfigurements, etc. if you saw a guy missing a fucking jaw, that guy was 1 a liability, 2 a sign that something powerful enough to rip off a jaw was running around. If you saw a guy with pure white eyes, which we now can assume is just fucking cataracts, that guy was 1) a liability 2) potentially infectious. If you saw a guy who was missing fingers or had big peels of skin coming off of him, or couldn't walk right or hold a weapon, etc, that guy was, you guessed it, a liability! its the same reason we instinctively try to fit into social groups; if you get hurt or get sick and you can't help hunt or gather, you are in danger of being ostracized by the community which supports you. its why cats and dogs will often hide that they're sick until they're literally about to die. it's not some profound cosmic horror.
