They did it before with Billy Eilish and Lizzo. Plus, a lot SNL's current cast members and writers are Gen Y and Gen Z (with the exception of Kenan Thompson, who's Gen X, and Lorne Michaels, who I believe is a Boomer, but Lorne mostly stays in the background as writer and executive producer) and SNL does try to reinvent itself to stay relevant (despite older generations feeling that that's a screw to them somehow), so it's on-brand for them to do something like this.
