imagine putting a schluter metal trim on the edge of your tile walls. you would have a wide grout joint from the metal to the wall right? maybe upto an inch? cut new pieces of your wall tile to fill that gap and make sure you line up the joints.

Half the time you can't find bullnose in the same color. Then if you do find it, it's not even the same length as the field tile. So tired of tile companies not making standard sizes for things. Nothing matches, there's no consistency. Even blades. Go to get another 7 inch blade, put in on and it grinds a groove in my saw because it wasn't 7 inch. It was 7 1/8 or something. And shluter strips, well you can get the profile but they don't have corner pieces. These companies just keep pumping out crap and expect the installers to work miracles. Arrrrrrrrrggggggggg! We are not all Sal Diblasi. Come on companies. I've been building houses and finishing houses for years and no trade has more inconsistencies and opposing views than tile work. Drives me nuts. If it weren't for you I'd give it up. You're the man Sal

I'm enjoying your videos, especially all the little pearls of wisdom from all your experience. What do you suggest to use to trim out the end of a shower wall for a wavy tile (12X24 inches)? It's ceramic so the color doesn't go all the way through so bullnosing it won't work. The Schluter trim are for flat tiles so you'll see the wave against whatever color the trim is. Should that get filled in with grout or does it matter? Of course the tile company didn't make finish pieces for this tile. It's too late for me to turn back now. Thank you!

I bought a color backed bullnose glass tile I want to use as a "frame" for my subway tile backsplash. I have a couple of questions. I want to turn the bullnose side down at the countertop, facing out (away from the subway tile) on the sides, and facing up at the base of the cabinets. I have several areas where the bullnose meets bullnose at exterior corners and am wondering how on earth I'm supposed to miter those exterior corners to make sure I don't have an unfinished tile edge. When I cut the 45 degree miters at these corners, am I supposed to cut the color backed bullnose tile joints (with a wet tile saw) with the glass side facing up or down on these cuts. Thanks!

Help Sal! I don't know how to select the proper schluter edge for a large format 3D tile. I have a 16x32 3D tile that the thickness varies from 5/16 to 3/8. I've watched every video I can find on notch size for thinset and installing schluter bars. I just don't know if 3/8" Jolly will work or if I have to go to a 1/2" on that 3D tile. Schluter says might be best to upsize for large format but is an 1/8 to 3/16 of an inch too much to add for the schluter? I'm afraid it could stick out to far in spots and look bad. I also have a 12 x 24 porcelain tile that is 5/16 so it seems I would be safe with a 3/8" Jolly schluter for a shower curb and wall edge. Thanks for everything you do here on your channel. You have helped me so much.
@SalDiBlasi4 жыл бұрын
The 1/2" will probably work fine with the 32" tile, you need a pretty deep bed of mortar under the tile. I usually use 3/8" metal for 12x24 inch tiles. but the 1/2" should work fro that as well. When the tile varies in thickness along the edge, you will have to make a compromise just due to the nature of the tile.
@MsJRow14 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for your speedy response! I really appreciate you! I feel more confident now and will order the 1/2" Schluter for the the 32" 3D tile. Thanks again!

Your videos are great! I'm about to embark on my first DIY tiling job in years and have watched a load of your videos to try and hone the skills. One thing I'm struggling to find info on is how to terminate the tile at the top of a stair landing where the stairs themselves aren't tiled. Do you have any videos on that?
@SalDiBlasi3 жыл бұрын
I do not, however an oak nosing or some other profile usually works.
@rodgerq3 жыл бұрын
@@SalDiBlasi this was one option I had looked at. Basically just cut the existing bullnose off the stair and replace it with a hardwood one. Some of the schluter nosing profiles are decent but all show time on the riser and the landing so I'm unsure if that would be feasible.

Removed old tile surround. Old backer board removed. Had to put 1/4” strips on studs to get new Durock to be plum over new tub lip. Cement board is now just shy of 1/2” out further than existing wall it transitions to. How do I hide that?
@SalDiBlasi5 жыл бұрын
@@ryansousa6611 Usually it is best to do whatever is needed to avoid that. I would imagine you can't move the tub to one side at this point so you only have to deal with one end. Planning is critical to avoid this exact situation, but since you are now stuck with it, you can look into a "Mud cap" but your tile probably will not work with that, you can add another layer of sheetrock to bring everything to the same level, or maybe some kind of metal tile trim, www.schluter.com/schluter-us/en_US/Profiles/For-Walls/c/P-FW Good luck

Ryan you can use a Schluter trim and fill the gap behind it with tile strips. i have done it but by now i'm sure you already figured it out.
@ncooty2 жыл бұрын
But pretty much none of that works if you fur out the studs so the backer goes over the tub flange, because you have to return to the plane of the original wall, not the plane of the furred-out backer. It's the same with floated tile. It seems nobody makes tiles for installing the backer properly, so people don't do it. They just put the backer on the flange or behind it, because otherwise, the tile job is impossible... or you have to rip out all of the walls, fur out all of the studs, and re-drywall/ re-trim everything. All because tile companies can't be bothered to make actual radius bull-nose. Is that about the sum of it?
