Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland feels more like Narnia with a bunch of Lewis Carroll references, they even made the Dormouse into a Reepicheep knockoff. If they really wanted a dark Alice in Wonderland they should have made an American McGee's Alice adaption which did it much better.

Honestly, it's refreshing to see someone actually give these movies some appreciation. The first movie is one of my favorite LA remakes and I never understood why so many people hated it. Even if this is 3 years late, thank you for your perspective.

Finally, a reactor that liked these movies. Most of them think the first one was shit and the second one was ok. I on the other hand enjoyed both of them (the sequel a little bit more) so its nice to see a reactor that also enjoyed them

Personally in my opinion, American Mcgee's Alice is the best Alice. It's closer to the source material, it takes a darker turn without it trying to be edgy, the writing is really good, and she's actually british.

The reason the dormouse was so drowsy in the book was entirely because of its species - they're not regular house mice/fieldmice, they're a different but similarly-sized rodent that goes into a form of hibernation and spends an inordinate amount of time sleeping beyond that. The "dor" is from the same root as "dormant". I know this because I was looking for mice with hairy tails when designing a character of my own, and was pleasantly surprised to find that a dormouse was a real thing rather than being like the Mock Turtle or Bread and Butterfly.

Nice to see someone knows this. I doubt most people these days know what a dormouse is. This girl in the movie acted more like a hyperactive shrew, and yeah, the design, with the sword, was too much like Reechicheep from Narnia. It was a really stupid decision.

I personally think, that the main beef with those movies is that they are based on a story, which is about a world, which is mad and has no rules, and add rules and epic stuff. I don't like them for this, but honestly, if we take them on their own merit, disregarding the book, they are pretty cool.

After seeing NC's reviews of the Alice in Wonderland movies, I must admit that I like your review much more. Though NC's reviews are always containing exaggerated reactions and scenes with actors, the comment on Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland feels really mean-spirited. I have to agree that Tim Burton's version was a little bit dull but there were still some good scenes and it didn't deserve to be insulted like that. Your opinion on movies feel more honest to me. You try to see the good in every movie and appreciate good moments even if the whole movie is terrible. You are fair with your criticism and still manage to be entertaining. NC's reviews are entertaining, but often mean-spirited, exaggerated and sometimes even insulting. You don't need to scream like a monkey and insult fans of a movie to make a review. And I love the fact that you keep your format of only reviewing movies for kids and don't end up reviewing other movies just because everyone is watching them. I see your point and respect it however I love NC he’s changed my life for the better, I never thought deep about films animation or the art of storytelling, or the importance of children’s story writing ✍️ until I started watching he’s reviews. Once again, I applaud you for sticking with your opinion. I don't particularly like either of these movies, but I can see why you do, which is a sign of a good critic if they are able to present their opinions in a way the opposite side can enjoy. However, what keeps me from enjoying these films is that they add too much logic and modernism into the story (why does every live action fantasy film these days have to be about war), and Alice herself is a bland piece of cardboard who barely emotes or influxes her voice. But I'm glad you found the plot and the updated characters to your liking.

I agree with you. I hate it how the movie tried too hard to take itself seriously with the prophecy and be all dark and gritty for the sake of it. Also the tone was so inconsistent that it prevented me from enjoying it, like the movie was bipolar.

It really is. One moment you have the Mad Hatter shouting jibbrish, and the next they're talking about Wonderland politics. On the one had you could say this shows how mad the characters are, but then their actions have too much logic and consistency between them. And Alice, despite being the "innovator" of her time period, does nothing until the very end of the film to support this. I remember near the beginning, she saw these two women who she'd apparently caught skinny dipping, and you know what, THAT sounds more challenging to the establishment than anything Alice said or does in this film or its sequel.

On the internet, if you like something that everyone else hates or hate something that everyone else likes, regardless of whether or not your reasons are flimsy, you'll get bullied to hell and back, and it's both very stressful and very annoying. It's even more annoying when the perception of a movie was changed because of _one_ popular KZbinr's review of it. Even if I like that reviewer's opinion as well as the reviewer themself's, it would still get annoying when everyone suddenly treats it like fact just because of one person's opinion.

I agree on all points. I'm not sure if the Alice's problem of being bland is an issue with the character or an issue with the actress (I'd like to think it's latter since she barely ever emotes). Also, while I admire Burton's attempt to modernize the Wonderland setting, I think the books have a little more story than he gives them credit for. Alice goes through a very fascinating character arc in regards to the way she perceives nonsense. At first, she finds it whimsical and enchanting, but the more she tries to wrap her brain around it, the more she finds that the very nature of Wonderland won't allow her to. Thus, the conflict forms as she finds herself struggling to decide if she should fight the madness or accept it at face value for the sake of survival. In fairness, the conflict is never actually resolved since Alice wakes up before she can discover if logic truly does triumph in the end, but there is a conflict nonetheless; as well as a plot progression.

I agree on Alice's development in the book, which can also be seen in shades in the Disney cartoon. That's why I blame the actress and the voice direction more than the character, since Kathryn Beaumont did a good job as Alice in the animated film. In that film she was still polite and dignified, like women were at the time, but she had her limits. She could get angry or sad, or just show emotion. That made her more relatable and human. This Alice, on the other hand, never emotes, never seems to be amazed or shocked by what she's seeing, and always talks like she just woke up and hasn't had coffee. The movies try to tell me that she is a free thinker like her father, but it does nothing to support this outside of the very end where she becomes a trader and... dances while showing her feet. Again, I find the two girls who skinny dipped off-screen as more "against the norm" than this Alice is, and they had 30 seconds of screentime.

I have more of a problem with the sequel than the first one. Though the first one wasn't that great the second one actually made me livid. It gave a redemption arc to a character that was quite frankly an ass. She slayed an entire village with a giant dragon, enslaved people/animals, murdered people on the regular having a moat with their heads literally floating around her castle and was a domestic abuser. She killed her first husband the Red King, then would slap around Stayne(though he was a jerk as well), and literally tried to kill Time in the second movie. The second movie should be titled "Father Time's Death" because all we are watching is this poor man deteriorating and in constant pain. The Red Queen literally physically assaults him in the first twenty damn minutes of the movie. Her redemption arc is not only forced, but you expect me an audience member to be sympathetic to her after she abused a man who did nothing but lover her the entire run time of this film? Her purpose for him was clear. It was to get to the Chronosphere by any means and that even meant tying him up and leaving him to die. Really expecting me to believe she deserves redemption? HELL NO! It's clear these writers didn't give any thought to this. If you have a character that has done THIS many heinous things the redemption arc is SOOOO out of the question it's all the way past Pluto. Just every time she was on screen with Time I cringed so hard it physically hurt me. What the hell kind of message are you sending your audience by giving someone like this a redemption arc? I am really starting to hate Disney's "anyone can change and be good" mentality in these movies. NO, a SORRY is not going to change all the heinous things her and her sister did. This movie is a horribly written mess where they try to push the "women empowerment" message SO hard it backfires. What kind of empowerment message are you sending by having one of your female characters abuse, manipulate, belittle, gas light and leave their lover to die? This movie. WOW! Just WOW!

Either way, really disliked both Johnny Depp's portrayal, and the character design. The Hatter should not be pretty. I am OK with him being tall - that's fine - but he should look more unkempt and eccentric. Not like a frickin' superhero.

Instantly love everything about your show just from your using the most empowering line in movie history . . . You have no power over me! I loved the first one and I was blown away by the message of the second. Having just lost a family member, it was incredibly touching to see that message about time giving before it takes. Honestly, after so many have hated these for existing, this was, pun completely intended, a fresh cup of tea. Seeing someone, much less a great reviewer, not stooping to following the same love/hate trends we as a community have built up (I.e. OoT is the best because old and Undertale sucks because memes), is a great refresher. I personally like these, and think that the sequel is better for not relying on Burton's over saturation of dark colors, so good on you for giving us a unique and positive review for this. (And for making it both films, I didn't see that coming) Kudos to you Bob, may the force be with you.

I love Irish folk music, and I think the tune used in this review fits far better along with the Fuderwacken. (I'm assuming that's how you spell it.) I can't help but wonder though, was that rendition of the music by chance the version performed by the group Gaelic Storm? :D

For me these two movies were a mixed bag. Visually it captured Wonderland absurdly and creatively. I didn't like some of the needless changes (especially the "underland " and making the queen of hearts the same as the red queen) or making the plots generic fantasy tropes for the most part. I guess I expected Tim Burton to play with the weirdness of Louis Carrol a bit more.

Eh...I'm glad you enjoyed this, but the CGI/intentional uncanny valley thing doesn't really hold water when you consider that all his his recent films have been total CGI fests. And nothing can excuse the dreadful performance of Alice herself. THAT SAID, your finale was spot on. We love you, and I'm so happy to have watched you gain success.

A lot of people say the scroll thing was a plothole but I think it was a really cool addition as a nod back to the second book. The white queen mentions to Alice that in Wonderland, memory goes both ways so a scroll depicting the history of Underland both forwards and backwards in time makes sense

I saw the sequel with my family in the theater, and while the first two acts were pretty standard, the minute the Red Queen rusted over, my sister and I sat up in our seats and watched what was one of the most batshit time travel nightmarefuel climaxes that I've ever seen so far. Its the best part of the movie hands down, but aside from that, the fate of the Knave of Hearts and Alice leading the ship at the beginning, I honestly would want to rewatch the first one all the way through. But back to the time travel, out of all the ways to show what happens if you meet your past self, it has to be the horrific, frozen eternally way, not that its a terrible idea or not entertaining. I have to say, I laughed at the image of Alice, the Hatter, the White Queen and rusted Red Queen inside the chronosphere ship. It was such a tense moment in the film as they sailed through the sea of time, but that short scene made it downright hilarious. I do feel awful for every young child who saw that. It may not have been for long, but some scary moments can stay with you for a long time, and I feel like it was a jarring tonal shift and would be on par with a jumpscare. Hell, they even freeze on Alice's face when you think everything's gone wrong, to let the nightmare fuel sink all the more into the children's minds! And while I feel that children do need to be shown scary things, I think this toes the line a little.

Bob, if you are going threw some stuff don't worry. We are all here and we all love your show. We can wait a bit as long as you never lose interest and never lose what makes you well you. So be sure to take brakes and take it easy sometimes but not enough to lose your spark. I have felt both of these with my autism making me obsessed with doing some things and my depression making me want to do nothing. But if anyone can do this, even if I may not know you well, I feel you can do it. I know this may get lost but know where all here and we're all here by your side.

4:34 And that's the biggest problem of the movie. Burton tried to turn this into something it was never supposed to be. It was dry, mistaking dark colours for actually being dark (seriously the story is dark enough you don't also have to suck out the lightness out of nearly all colours used in the movie!), and tried to force another stupid movie prophecy down our throats, because that worked so well for the Star Wars prequels, right? And then there is the issue of Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp playing Bellatrix Lestrange and Captain Jack Sparrow once more. Which annoys me way more than anything else in this movie. I want to see these two amazing actors play a role in a major Hollywood blockbuster that doesn't remind me of these other two roles. Carter at least still gets to play more down to earth roles when she appears in British productions, but Depp? Holy shit, all he does now is a variation of Jack Sparrow, and this movie is no expection. Also, it's a shitty adaptation. Not only because this is a sequel to the original story while not telling us that (go fuck yourself Disney), like Bob himself said: All this movie has in common with the source material are the names of the characters. That's not saying that this is necessarily a bad movie (and I would never claim it to be a good movie), but it definitely sucks as an adaptation.

I didn't find out that Moff Tarkin was computer generated in Rouge One until after I saw it, so I think those special effects are better than they're often given credit for. Same goes for most computer effects today. So I don't think this was Tim Burton wanting to exploit the "uncanny valley" (which I don't get so much from stuff personally, except for maybe The Polar Express to some degree?) so much as it was him trying to have an endless canvas to work with.

It's so refreshing to hear someone praise Burton and not say it's past his time. He gets so much hate for this and Charlie and the Chocolate factory because they weren't exact copies of others works or aren't dark and full of nightmare fuel. I got so mad at the Nostalgia Critic review of this movie, because he said that "American McGee did a better Tim Burton Alice than Burton did.". No!!! American McGee did a Great DARK take on Alice, while Burton tried to find more of a balance with how the story is seen, not too dark and not too light, it's in a spot where it's hard to tell. Honestly my main problem is the lead actress.

I enjoyed both movies for what they are. I've come to realize that you can't demand that all adaptations of a story be exactly the same as "the good one". After all, nobody holds A Christmas Carol on such a high pedestal that they pick only ONE version and blacklist all the other hundred-plus adaptations. If somebody wants to tell a an old story in a new way, I set let them.

Not true! I myself am quite fond of your work, and applaud your efforts in regards to what you review. Hell, you've actually made films like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the Alice in Wonderland films by him, and some of the more disliked films in this world a new perspective. That's actually a lost art with most reviewers, say for a few notable exceptions, and you definitely need more love than you get! Seriously, I'm amazed you never tried working for Channel Awesome!

Right, that dance scene would not be out of place with the music you inserted....but that's not the music they chose and it's asking a whole lot of the audience to imagine different, more appropriate music. But if I ever see this movie again, that music will be in my personal head canon!
