I have been a fan of this fella ever since I saw one of his first video performances. Not only is he musically gifted but also stylistically innovative . Constructing a live rig used to be highly impractical. Tim uses current technology effectively and he customizes his setup to be intuitive, allowing for maximum flexibility. -one of a kind he is!

The equipment list if anyone is interested: Novation Launchpad (Cost: $169.99) (The only one he pointed out in specific)(The one he has at the time of this video is the orginal, there are 2 newer ones out now, one with velocity sensitive pads and RGB pads, another with just the RGB pads.) M-Audio Keystation49 (Cost: $99.99) (I believe the current model is only available in black unlike the grey/silver he has) Behringer B-Control Rotary BCR2000 (Cost: $149.99 each) (He has two of these, one on each side.) Behringer B-Control Fader BCF2000 (Cost: $299.99) (Theres only one of these, this is where all his faders are, 8 total. They are motorized so when switching control it will automatically go to the value the chosen control is at.) Akai LPK25 (Cost: $69) (This is the small keyboard beneath the Launchpad) Akai MPD18 (Cost: $99) (This is the drum pad he has to the left of the Lauchpad) I'm not sure which microphone he's using but I saw the Samson logo. I don't feel like I need to add this, but the software he's using is Native Instruments Reaktor (Cost: $399.) In total this all costs $1436.95 plus however much the microphone is was.

Aiden Kenway I didn't include the MacBooks, due to me not knowing the specifications, or his audio interface due to only seeing the bottom of it. He also has Traktor Kontrol S4 (based on when this was published its definitely a MK1), and two turntables (I couldn't find any turntable baring the logo, possible that the complanies logo changed, or doesnt exist anymore. Anyone who might recognize it, it would be awesome for you comment it.) I doubt that he's used them recently though, just something to point out.

Amazing work by Tim Exile as always. I'd say he's more of a musician than some people playing a guitar. That's all about holding the right chord and stumming, that's really simple, while this encompasses being a drummer, pianist, conductor, vocalist, producer, sound designer and dj all at the same time and in real time. Most proper "musicians" today are also too afraid of messing up on stage so they just fake it and do playback. This setup incorporates the risk of mistakes into the experience.

Don't give up that easily. I'm practicing at least once per week with Reaktor building stuff, and I have done that for the last 12 years, and I am still a noob, still I'm not giving up. So keep at it!

im someone who always struggled with the patience of learning my guitar despite loving it and using pedals to make "tom morello"-like sounds and then catch them on loops I dont think anyone is thinking his performance is super skilled , including him, most DJing w/ exception of turntablism,technical finger drumming,a few others. but the power is in the innovation. it should take a painter longer to learn than a photographer, but an amazing photo can still be as powerful as an amazing painting

Tim, you are a master of MIDI controllers and a genius with Reaktor. How long did it take to actually learn your skills of putting it all together? The reason I ask is that I'm a musician and looking at a much simpler setup where, like you, I can use the tools to create 'on the fly' performances.

I think Tim Exile is brilliant. Is there anyone out the who could post a video on how to setup The Finger to work thru NI Maschine. I don't quite understand how to set up the midi to run the sounds. Please, that would totally make my day, Thanks.

what usb hub do you use? how many hubs? how many buses are on the hub/s? and so, this is all just done in one massive standalone reaktor preoject, is this correct? similar to the way max/msp can work in a way.

By the way Sam, I just wanted point out that while Reaktor might seem like a high-level software tool at first glance, it's not. Reaktor is immensely powerful and the possibilites are mind-boggling. Having said that, Tim doesn't seem to be going that deep into it - but he's getting very creative with its modules. That's essentially what Jimi did - he got creative with pre-built modules to create his own signature sound. Not saying Tim is any comparison, but it's food for thought.

Hehe, I see. I personally don't know much about Tim. I was only responding to what seemed like a generalization on your part about his art. Now that I know what started the debate, I have to say: Don't skill and knowledge go hand in hand? It's a synergistic blend that makes the musician, not either one by itself. While EM is easy to get into, I still feel that an EM producer can indeed take '20 years' to become 'skillful' at his art. Not necessarily performance, but the 'art', the 'blend'.
@RainyVermillion
@RainyVermillion 11 жыл бұрын
Well put! I understand where you're coming from very well now. I think people are making the wrong comparison when they try to draw parallels between a pianist and a DJ pressing buttons. They are indeed, two very different things. I think people reacted to what you were saying only because they took it as an attack to Tim Exile, which it obviously wasn't :)

But Sam, if my grandma heard Jimi Hendrix she would say "What's this garbage? Just distorted noise! Play some Bach, that's real music". If I had a mediocre amp and a guitar playing basic articulations in my room, she would think it's Hendrix. But you know better - it would take years to get close to him. Could you agree that perhaps the 'freaked out' sound contains several subtleties and articulations in it that define Tim's irreplaceable, original style that took him years to come up with?
@RainyVermillion
@RainyVermillion 11 жыл бұрын
Haha, yes. Piano playing is not anything like what Tim is doing with the buttons. They're two very different things that tie into their respective art styles in different ways :) But about EM being simple. I disagree! Lol. What about Shpongle, Shulman, Bluetech, or even Infected Mushroom? There's a lot of depth there that takes more than the average EM producer's skill set to create. They've holistically refined their art over several years and know much more than mere 'synths and tricks'.
@PlerbyMcFlerb
@PlerbyMcFlerb 11 жыл бұрын
1. the "freaked out sound" he demonstrated depends on the source sound, so, no, it won't be the same. 2. The idea that using software for music undermines it is absolutely ridiculous. Moreover, programs like Reaktor allow you to work at a low level of digital audio so its a little silly to say it defines/constrains your sound. 3. Something isn't more valid just because it's more difficult.

I feel you, but you shouldn't undermine Tim's performance skill just because it doesn't fit the traditional definition of playing a musical instrument . No one could simply 'learn the tools' and start sounding 'exactly like him'. There's a large degree of creative expression at play here that makes his performance unique to him and 'soulful' in its own right. He has spent years co-developing this performance style with his software configuration, which should be acknowledged, if not respected.

I feel you. Well I'm sure they can still appreciate music (subtly tainted by ignorant beliefs) for the sounds that are hitting their ears, not for how they were produced, or for the skill level of the musician. I remember how I appreciated good music before I knew a thing about instruments or software. At the same time, if they want to exude their ignorance all over the internet, that just makes them look stupid, and more often than not, no amount of reason will get through to these types :P

Just like if you took a guitar away from a guitarist, they'd also be f**ked. Your point was stupid...To make different genres of music, different methods are taken. so musicianship hasn't been reduced to using a laptop, but to make electronic music you use a laptop, its a preferred method.
