Yes, but at the same time it goes deeper since most of the racist issues are based on prejudice and fear of the unknown. Drawing parallels between two groups which face vastly different issues in society helps to see the actual issue with prejudice and superstition. It's kinda horrible what kind of myths are spreading around about certain minorities or even larger groups of people. People need to learn to fight their own prejudice which is often not that easy. Indoctrination from the parents and in groups can't be "fixed" / erased that easily. A good example is the story of the black Daryl Davis and his KKK buddy. An amazing story. If you haven't seen it yet, look it up on YT. He had a TED talk about it.

Tim has been doing the music comedy thing for a minute and has some amazing performances. You are right about his "bars" he has a lot of wordplay in his lyrics. Also did what he was telling you not to do... singing along saying the G word. Which also highlights how white people at concerts get to singing the N word if its part of the lyrics. First time on your channel. GREAT reaction!!! Thank you! It is so refreshing to have a reaction that actually reflects within, as well as after, sharing your genuine thoughts, emotions and experiences. (also thank you for talking about the impact of the other word and your own perspectives) I like that you "got" the song too, how the opening part is so true and isn't invalidated in any way by the later wordplay, what with ginger being an anagram. "Just 6 little letters jumbled up into a word". And then he takes it to the word that he feels, and knows, that has been used against him, and countless other people - due to hair colour. And the prejudice that people with 'red' hair do indeed face in many cultures, or have faced in times past. As he says "ritual bullying in the schoolyard" and "no invitation to the high school dance", IMO he is drawing parallels between the absurdity of abusing and bullying and 'othering' a group of people because of their skin colour or their natural hair colou. That bullying and prejudice are of course bad, but also the emotional impact and damage done to the victim of the bullies is very real and nobody else has the right to try and take that away from the individual or to diminsh them. Thats just some of my thoughts on it though anyway; The 1st part still holds true, the "twist" catches people off guard, and then when their defences are down through laughter or surprise he uses some fancy word play and lyrics along with some excellent piano to leave you with something that is fun, but also provocative.

Mmmm think you missed one aspect of that song G.I.N.G.E.R when you rearranged the letters they become the original nasty word you thought he was singing about. Tim’s odd brand of magic becomes even more spectacularly clever the more you delve into his creations.

Maybe it's an Aussie thing calling redheads, which Tim is, a Ginger. That's the twist in the song. It's a sleight of hand, lyrically.

Ahhhhh didn't catch that

No one with a brain, and basic literacy, is missing the message of the two words 👍🏿🇦🇺

Tim is crazy ass talented. he is concert level on the piano, his comedic timing is great, has a decent voice and can throw messages in his song that are very deep.

Tim's written musicals and a zillion fabulous, edgy, comedic, social commentary songs. An exceptional Aussie talent who is on the world stage. If you want to experience him skating on thin ice (metaphorically), watch 'Lullaby.'

But I think that is the cleverest thing about this song, he avoided being taken wrongly by commenting on the prejudice upon his own genetics.
@jackwhitbread45832 жыл бұрын
Actually he hasn't written any Broadway shows, he was the composer and lyricist for Matilda and Groundhog day and white wine in the sun is the song that convinced the Matilda producers that Tom could write more 5han just comedic master pieces

@@jackwhitbread4583 thanks, I may have mixed him up with another, I'll edit my comment to take that out.

How many were saying “no don’t stop it, you have the wrong idea”. While pissing yourselves laughing and knowing what’s coming.

Ah mate. Everything you said before the 'punchline' was SO accurate. It's an important subject & people could do worse than listen to your views on this. It was hard not to laugh though, coz I knew what was coming & you didn't disappoint. Definitely one of the best reaction vids I've seen & I'll be sure to check out some more of yours. Go in peace mate.. Greetings from across the pond. 👍

Tim wrote the score & lyrics for the musical Matilda. Turning the 2 Gs and R & an E, an I & an N & making it ginger rather than the N word is genius
@ared-ainu2 жыл бұрын
I think it's so important to realise that he is NOT making fun of the n-word situation, he is in fact still tackling that issue in a genuine way. Your initial reaction is still right, he just packs it in a different humorous package.

Tim Minchin is a genius. A highly intelligent man.

Ah, I see you have discovered one of our national treasures. I enjoyed your reaction to it so much I am going to subscribe. Btw, either in a vid or otherwise, check out some of his other songs like "rock n roll nerd", "I can have a darkside too" or "it's not perfect" (that last one makes me tear up a little). Excellent body of work imo, and if you liked this you will likely enjoy some of his other stuff (he cuts sick on the piano on I can have a darkside too) Again, nice vid

The intro to this is so powerful. I'm white and before the comedic twist of 'ginger' happens, we all think about the N-word, and the n word IS so fraught because of the hundreds of years of history behind its use. You can reclaim it. I can't. It's simple.
@alexbaca60482 жыл бұрын
That's hilarious!! You can see the "ah-ha moment" he has, even though he tries not be obvious. He wanted to laugh out loud, but he was still raving from his "fight the power" vibe he was getting from the first half of the song 😆 🤣 😂 😹 😆

The 1st part of this song gets EVERYBODY the same. Tim Minchin is a bloody geneous. He also scored the musical "Matilda"

Love Tim’s knack to brining a unique take to social issues with comedy. Hoping someone gets you to react to ‘thank you god’ but with the lead in monologue before he gets stuck into the song. Love love love
