He’s Australian.. he taught himself piano and wrote the Broadway musicals Matilda and Groundhog Day. He also played Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar. This song is an “up yours” to the record producers who don’t think his genre of music will sell records as it doesn’t appeal to the right markets. He’s saying what more do you want? I got a dark side, i can do smoke and mirrors, I can tell sad childhood stories and I can play like Elton John!

I am not sure you can say that he taught himself piano. He took piano lessons for a few years before quitting and then going back to it while messing about and writing music with his brother. That being said he is definitely not extensively trained and calls himself a 'hack pianist' according to Wiki.
@Dr_KAP
@Dr_KAP 2 жыл бұрын
@@jgodbee3090 from my understanding from his various interviews he could play by ear as a young boy and was basically teaching himself piano so they put him in lessons for a couple of years but he didn’t gel with it so he left and continued to learn on his own. He tells the story of teaching himself to play on his Gran’s Piano. He has no classical training at all so certainly this component of his skill was entirely self taught.

Dark Side works on so many levels and it blows me away. On the surface level it's literally just about how Tim owns the fact that he is a quirky and positive personality and doesn't have to have layers of dark emotion behind it. But behind it you see that he does care about serious topics in the world which he expresses through comedy and complex musical talent. So in this song he says I am deep - lol jk not really - but yeah actually there is more to me because I care. The irony behind a comedy song lacking depth while having several layers of meaning is so ironic I love it. But then he'll just do something silly to distract you from thinking about that too much.

Tim Minchin famously was broken by Hollywood as he spent years writing and making an animated Australian centric movie with huge Australian celebrities he said it was going to be huge with music numbers he wrote. Then the studio changed hands and an exec told him it would never see the light of day. He tried to get the movie released from their control so he could distribute it but they said NO!

@@fransmith3255 Nah, that's just typical Hollywood BS, it's not uncommon for new studio executives to dump projects in preproduction or severely meddle in them to the point where they bare little resemblance to the original product. They're like dogs, they gotta piss on everything to mark their territory.
@fransmith3255
@fransmith3255 2 жыл бұрын
@@revylucian8289 Sure, that happens. But Tim's material, if nothing else, always contains controversy. And this "Hollywood" behaviour does have precedent. It has happened before that massive studios purchased the rights to material in order to stop other studios from pursuing them. His Dark Materials, for example. The full series was purchased by some religious idiots, for the express purposes of ensuring that the religious/anti-religious related content of the books would not be depicted. They made the first movie, totally misrepresenting the book material (changing the motivations behind the plot to fit with particular personal beliefs), then refused to make the next two. Of course, all contracts have a used-by date, and with the recent TV series, it seems that more thorough, careful choices were made to ensure that this mistake wasn't repeated. So it's not beyond imagination that similar things could happen to Tim Minchin's material. While it may not have been what happened, it's certainly not so improbable either. Tim Minchin reportedly had a LOT of very angry arguments, over many months apparently, with those in power. There were a lot of 'artistic' disagreements, which is exactly what happened with His Dark Materials. It's actually quite a large possibility that this is exactly what did happen. Not sure, but very possible.

@@fransmith3255 It was a rock road movie about a bilby, not what you would call political. It was more the fact that the new studio owner was Dreamworks, and they seem to only believe in existing intellectual property.

Amazingly talented. I recall a documentary on his career highlighting that it took a very long time for his genius to be widely appreciated (since it’s such an unusual intersection of music/comedy/craziness). He had apparently almost given up trying to “sell records/tickets” when he finally got his break, and that history gives a darker background to humorous songs like this: between the lyrics, you can imagine him giving the finger to everyone who failed to appreciate him back in the day. Glad that he now gets the recognition he deserves.

One of my favourites, a regular at festivals here, seen him a couple times, definitely worth seeing him live, so very entertaining, a great lyricist, piano player, vocalist and wonderful physical comedian, pure genius

Loved the performance and your reaction. His live shows are stupendous. The audience really gets into the show. The piano playing is as good as the lyrics.

The song "thank you god" is quite possibly his most clever songs. The best video of it is about 11 minutes long and the first half is him building up the story that made the song but its well worth the watch and should be one of your reaction videos

If you want bars, listen to the School Song from Matilda the Musical written by Tim. So, so clever to write a song with all the context needed,but emphasizing the letters of the alphabet. Truly phenomenal song writing.

YES. I have been saying for years now that School Song rivals anything Lin-Manuel or Sondheim ever did. Absolutely genius (even though when you compliment him on it he tries to give the credit to another guy). I would love to see some reaction videos of THAT song, coz watching people “get it” for the first time is one of the great joys in life 😆
