Tim Staples: Former Assemblies of God Youth Minister - The Journey Home Program

Tim was raised a Southern Baptist. Although he fell away from the faith of his childhood, he came back to faith in Christ during his late teen years through the witness of Christian televangelists. While in the Marine Corps, he became involved in ministry with various Assemblies of God communities. During his final year in the Marines, however, Tim met a Marine who really knew his faith and challenged Tim to study Catholicism from Catholic and historical sources. Tim was determined to prove Catholicism wrong, but he ended up studying his way to the last place he thought he would ever end up: the Catholic Church, into which he was received in 1988.

I am confused my faith started a year ago through my grandmother. I prayed for a sign that god was real because I was ready to end it all and the same night my grandmother talked to me and told me god had told her to tell me some things to comfort me and from there i knew god and Jesus are real. Then another time I prayed again about some stuff that was worrying me and my grandmother told me that night that what i was worrying about would happen in two months so I shouldn't worry thing is i never told her i was worried about anything. But fast forward two months later and what she said would happen never happened so it begs the question did she even speak through god to begin with, she had to she had to atleast speak through god or the devil but if it was the devil why would he bring me towards religion? My grandmother is catholic and i have seen many things that contradict catholic teachings in the bible but maybe i just don't understand the bible yet but it makes me more confused that my grandmother who is catholic gave me false prophecy so i am not sure what to believe.

I notice that so many converts as above start or just before becoming Catholic are with cultish denominations. If you want to give Protestantism a chance, find a TRULY REFORMED Presbyterian Church and Reverend, or if you want more "High Church, try a solidly reformed Episcopal Church. Here is the heart of the salvific differences, The Episcopal and the Presbyterian believe and confess that faith in Christ is sufficient. I have been studying this issue for three years. There was really NO TIME THAT PAUL's CORE letters were not considered inspired. Now the Catholics LOVE the saying to poor presbys that if you STUDY Church history and the fathers is to become Roman Catholic. The opposite is true. James, Chapter 2 is virtually their only ammo against the teaching of salvation by faith. Now if I say "alone" an ignorant person person will pull me into the battle over alone - there is a valid reason Paul used alone and the RCC theologians know because once a upon of time their teachers thought the grammar called for it. So let's use instead BUT to HIM THAT WORKETH NOT,BUT BELIEVETH ON WHO MAKES THE UNGODLY RIGHTEOUS, HIS FAITH IS ACCOUNTED FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS. What about Paul's admonishment that a mans works will be burned away as by fire even though he is saved? Didn't use the word Purgatory but the word trinity isn't in Scripture either. Presbyterians and the Reformed Episcopal Church don't have the Fullness of Jesus Christ in the Lord's Supper, that's the bottom line pal! Calvin's interpretation of the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist is lacking and insufficient! There is no verse in that specifically says that Mary intercedes. Intercession is the work of Jesus Christ. ◄ Hebrews 7:25 Therefore he (Jesus Christ) is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.

We ask for Mary's assistance just as like what happened in John 2, the wedding feast of Cana. It all goes through Jesus. When we ask for Mary's prayers, we are asking her to join with us when we approach her Son. Her response to the disciples was "Do what ever he tells you" just as she does with us. In Revelations 8:4, the Saints are interceding for us by offering up prayers. Who's prayers would they be offering up? They don't exactly need prayers for themselves if they're already in Heaven, so they must be praying for those who do need prayers, ours. We ask Mary to intercede for us just as I would ask you to please pray for me. I'll be praying for you. That being said, ALL of our prayers are answered through Jesus' intercession to God on our behalf. It's not that Mary goes to God for us, but rather WITH us. TL/TR, 1)Mary interceded for the wedding couple just as she does with us. 2)It's still through Jesus these prayers are answered. 3)All of the saints pray for us. 4)We intercede for each other when we ask for others to pray for us.

Also, in the ancient Middle East people referred to their cousins and family members as "BROTHERS." You can find this simply by going to secular sources as proof. You are right, and I tell you more, today if you listening me saluting a person of my father age special from village in (Portugal) next day you with swear that person was my uncle or aunt when in did he or she with be just a neighbor but because he or she was from my father generation all of us from my generation as a mater of respect with say uncle or aunt. What's actually really amazing about what Jesus says in verse 50 that you quoted. "For whoever does the will of My Father in Heaven is My brother and sister and mother." What's really amazing is that it exemplifies EXACTLY who Mary is! Paul opposed me to my face because I was not in step with the truth of the Gospel.(Gal. 2:11,14) Should we confess our sins to priests? Repent of your wickedness and pray to God that your sins may be forgiven. (Acts 8:22) Should we pray to Mary and the saints? Pray to God. (Acts 8:22) Can anyone be saved apart from the Lord Jesus Christ? "There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." (Acts 4:12) What would you say to Pope Francis who teaches that atheists can follow their conscience into heaven? "There will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction." "The ignorant and unstable twist Paul's letters to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures." (2 Peter 2:1; 3:16) Can anyone be certain that they have inherited eternal life? God has caused believers to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven and protected by the power of God through faith. (1 Pet. 1:3-5) Is it possible for God's grace or indulgences to be purchased for the remission of sins? God ransoms us "not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ." (1 Pet. 1:18-19) Can a person be born again through water baptism? The only way to be regenerated is to be "born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God." (1 Pet. 1:23) Should Jesus Christ be made a sin offering during the sacrifice of the Mass? Christ suffered "once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit" (1 Pet. 3:18). Is the Catholic priesthood necessary to mediate between God and man? Every believer, who is called out of darkness into Christ's marvelous light, is made a priest for the purpose of offering spiritual sacrifices to God and proclaiming His perfections (1 Pet. 2:9). Should Jesus continue to be pictured as a dead man hanging on a cross or as a baby in Mary's arms? The resurrected Christ has "gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him." (1 Pet. 3:21-22) What should we do in these days of great deception? Take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. (2 Pet 3:17-18) There is a profound contrast between the divinely inspired teachings of Peter and the fallible, ungodly opinions of Pope Francis. The enormous disparity between the instruction of these two men Catholics call "pope" shows how far the Roman Catholic Church has departed from the faith of the apostles. Paul preached a Justification that was like a contract as he speaks as if one's salvation is "locked" in. God is JUST and the TESTIFIER of him who believes in Him. There are no conditions accept belief in God's ability and desire to forgive ones sins. Once works is added to a thumbs up or down with God is blaspheme because in effect you do not believe that Christ's works are sufficient. Catholicism is not Gospel- because it is far away from Good news, but Luther truly frightened could get no peace of mind until he found out about faith sufficient as he finally obtained a translation of Romans,which is GOOD NEWS. I went two years to an Augustian Graduate M.A. in Theology,so Come home, not to kiss the ring of the Pope, but go to Pentecost and realize the abundance unmerited grace that thousands received. So remove that history bunk and go to the source backed by his signs of power. Do not even bring up James whose verification was large, sore, knees. Not a single record of a single healing. You do not want to to a one on one comparison of how Paul suffered and wrote with power. It is too embarrassing.

When a person says that, " to be deep in history is to cease being Protestant," most often they mean this; that Protestants and Catholics arrive at different doctrines BECAUSE THEY INTERPRET PARTICULAR SCRIPTURE PASSAGES DIFFERENTLY. But, the Catholic INTERPRETATIONS are those that have been handed down by the apostles to the early church (thus the historical record) while the definitions used by Protestants are relatively RECENT inventions of men.

Except what you say is meaningless as the "word" was not available to the commoner until those bothersome Protestants read the truth, and changed the world. There are two conflicting messages the James type uncertainty, which is the way the RCC control their masses- by fear, when Paul was latched onto by Luther and gave certainty to the believer of his future while again the RCC , in it's Canons "sends me to hell" for saying the Scripture is all about God the Son, doing and completing his mission in order to give the peace of mind, as any good OCD patient will die for, is the certainty the "third party, written will never change, until "itchy eared " scholars need something new. Christ's Gospel given by Christ to Paul , good as gold. Why? God doesn't even make the choice close between James and Paul...signs and wonders score: Paul , plenty and amazing and James: zero and a lot of hot air.

You raise so many points but, for starters, 1. all men are dead in sins, the Catholic Church is and has been full of terrible sinners, some popes have been awful no doubt, but the Church is THE CHURCH Our Lord founded (Mt 16:16-19...on this rock I will build MY Church), He and His Church aren't defiled by the sins of its members which are certainly plentiful. 2. Jesus' Death on the Cross is the ONE Sacrifice and no Mass "nullifies" this nor disputes it, the one sacrifice is entered into at each Mass and the reception of the Holy Eucharist, the actual Body Blood Soul and Divinity of Christ, is the ultimate altar call and personal relationship with Christ fulfilling his command that unless we eat his Body and drink His Blood we have no life within us (Jn 6). 3. What denomination doesn't have some hierarchy? You don;t have, or maybe you are, a pastor? That is a hierarchy and Christ Himself, the only example, had a hierarchy with Him and His apostles. God bless you, seriously no troll no sarcasm, consider that insets of being a false religion or cult or etc etc Catholicism simply is the fullness of Christianity and whatever relationship a person has with Christ grows to full maturity within the Church Jesus founded.

+Tim Spangler Tim, you don't understand Middle Eastern Culture of the time Jesus lived. You are interpreting everything from a Western (American) cultural understanding. Back then if you were in my family I called you my brother or sister even if you were my cousin. When Jesus referred to his brothers he was talking about his cousins. There is also good evidence indicating Joseph who was older than Mary by quite a few years, had his own children which would make them Mary's step children. There is no evidence that Mary had any other children. I am a Protestant Ordained Minister and I see the problem with the Protestants. We have so many Protestant Denominations because we have removed ourselves from the foundation of the Church. Therefore, we each have our own denominational interpretation of the scriptures. Each denomination uses the same scripture but each interprets it differently. This is out failing. One single scripture can't mean many different things including meanings that are 180 degrees opposed to each other. My question to you, Tim, is this: By what authority do you get your interpretation of the scriptures you are quoting? You cannot say by the "Holy Spirit," because each denomination of protestants say this, but each interprets the scriptures differently The Holy Spirit would not give one interpretation to one group and a different one to another. Our problem centers around our belief that my interpretation is correct and everyone else's is wrong. I am the only one who correctly hears the voice of the Holy Spirit. You might change your mind if you read the Early Church Fathers. These people either knew Jesus or his disciples. Another thing, did the Bible create the Church or did the Church create the Bible? Jesus didn't write it you know. The Catholic Church did in the 5th century. Prior to that the Church existed but what we call the Bible did not. The Catholic Church along with the Orthodox Church IS the original Church Jesus established. You need to read church history. Catholic simply means "universal" it comes from the Greek word "Katholikos." You need to realize that American Christians did not create Christianity!

It is the church who organised resistance against muslim invasions and expansion of europe. It is the church that sponsored the great art and music like michael angelo and Bach. It is the church that formed people like mother teresa, and st francis and fr damien who devoted his life to the service of lepers on the island of malachi. You say you wont scripture but you reject and deny the very church that gave you that scripture. Which Church decided that the gospels of thomas and peter were not authentic gospels - it was the catholic church. The Catholic church was founded by Jesus all the protestant churches were founded by men and by every tom, dick and harry who wants to start a new church.
